Western Maine’s Snowbelt Welcomes You For Great Riding

I f you crave high-altitude views, vast wilderness cor ridors, and some of the most reliable deep powder in the Northeast, turn your sled westward. Maine’s West ern Region—a sprawling, interconnected playground encompassing the Rangeley Lakes area, the rugged sol itude of the Eustis/Jackman corridor, and the foothills of the White Mountains—is often called the heart of Maine snowmobiling. This region is defined by its massive landscape, gener ous annual snowfall, and the selfless dedication of the clubs that maintain thousands of miles of trails, including critical sections of the state’s extensive Interconnected Trail System (ITS). Riding the Western Snowbelt The elevation change in Western Maine means consistent snow cover, often starting weeks before the lower eleva tions see sustained accumulation. Riders here can expect true wilderness experiences, punctuated by charming trailside stops where local hospitality thrives. Here is your guide to navigating the three distinct sec-tors of Western

Maine’s snowmobile empire: Sector 1:The Rangeley Lakes Gateway (ITS 89)

Rangeley is the quintessential Western Maine hub. Nes tled high in the mountains, this area offers diverse riding, from gentle cruising around the frozen lakes to challeng ing climbs near the height of land. The Experience: Rangeley’s trail system is world-re nowned for its scenic vistas. The ITS 89 corridor is a main artery that provides a direct route into the heart of the mountains. A must-do run is the loop around Range ley and Mooslookmeguntic Lakes, offering breathtaking views of Saddleback and the surrounding High Peaks. • Club Spotlight: The Rangeley LakeTrail System (RLTS) volunteers are masters of the groomer, ensuring that the 150+ miles they maintain are usually flawless. • Must-See: Don’t miss the opportunity to ride the high trails toward the Height of Land viewpoint, especially at sunrise. • Logistics: The town is fully set up for riders, offering ample parking, fuel, and lodging right off the trails.

higher elevations near Flagstaff Lake. • Tip for the Remote Rider: Services are more spread out in this region. Always top off your tank in Jackman or Eustis, and carry emergency supplies before ven turing onto remote sections of ITS 86. • Trail Characteristic: Expect long, straight runs through dense timberland, providing a genuine sense of escape. Sector 3:The Southern Fringe (Fryeburg and Bethel) While perhaps overshadowed by the northern giants, the southern region offers delightful riding in the foothills of the White Mountains, providing excellent options close to the New Hampshire border. The trails here often connect seamlessly with neighboring New Hampshire systems, offering vast trip planning potential. • Bethel & the Androscoggin River: The trails around Bethel provide rolling terrain and scenic river views. This area is known for its excellent local food estab lishments that cater directly to riders. • The Appeal: These trails tend to be less crowded than the main ITS routes near Rangeley, making them per fect for a relaxing mid-week ride.

Sector 2: The Northern Wilderness (Jackman and Eustis) For riders looking to truly embrace the Maine wilderness, the areas surrounding Jackman and Eustis offer solitude, deep drifts, and serious distance. These areas represent the last great expanse before hitting the Canadian border or crossing into the northern plantations. Jackman:The Great North Connect Jackman is a historical pit stop for riders pushing far north. The trails here are rugged and wide, built to handle heavy traffic and deep snow. ITS 86 runs directly through town, connecting riders heading south from the Forks or north toward Quebec. The local clubs work tirelessly to keep these remote trails open, even during heavy snow events. Eustis and the Sugarloaf Corridor The trail network around Eustis (ITS 84) offers a crucial east-west connection over mountainous terrain. This area, which flanks the famous Sugarloaf ski resort, ben efits from high elevation, often making it one of the first locations in the region to open for the season. Look for the challenging but rewarding trails that climb into the

house for lunch Sunday (with some sign work in the afternoon) and did a nice solo loop ride Monday on some great trails. I believe we are ahead of the last 2 years in snowpack and ability to get out and ride in many parts of the State. As always, ride right, ride smart so you & others on the trail can return home to your family and friends at the end of your ride/trip. Trail safety is everyone’s responsibility. Do not be caught wishing you would have spoken up or rode more responsibly. Many fundraisers and club events are planned throughout February. Get out & support your local club or charity by attending &/or helping with these events. Clubs rely on this additional funding to make ends meet. You should be able to find something to do every weekend spread all across the State. This is a great way to meet others who snowmobile the same area as you, meet club members and network with others to make connections with fellow sled-heads. MSA regional rides/directors’ meetings take place January, February & March across the State, look them up and plan to attend one (this year and/or next). If you cannot join, your clubs’ directors can attend via Zoom by finding the link on the MSA website. that there are sleds out riding pretty much everywhere throughout the state! Last I knew there was at least some riding and grooming activities from Waterboro to the Downeast Coast, to the “County” and over to the Western Mountains. Yes, of course we could all use another snowstorm or two for sure but it seems good to have Statewide snow for once. Most Clubs by and large are in full swing doing what they work so hard for all year, and that is getting to the point where they can get out and make the trails flat! A huge Thank You to all who make this happen! Just think about it next time you are out putting a couple hundred miles on in one day, just how much work went into every mile of that trip. It truly is amazing to think that you can connect the dots and ride from the southernmost part of Maine to the top of the St. John Valley if there is snow coverage. The MSA has been very busy this season with processing memberships coming into the office daily. The digital map team has been extremely busy receiving and uploading GPS Data from the clubs to the online Map, if your club wishes to have their club trails put on the digital map have them email the GPS file to several reroutes that we have been able to get updated in the MSA Trails APP. The past month has been extremely busy for the MSA Trails App team. We have constantly added club trails, POI’s , reroutes, and trail status updates. We have also fielded techni cal support calls and many requests for “How To”. This first season with the App has indeed been a challenge of getting everyone educated about the App itself and familiar with process for submitting data and updates. There has been great excitement from the clubs, and we truly appreciate your participation. One very positive consequence of this new App is that communication between the clubs and the MSA has improved tremendously. We truly want and need your input, not just for the app, but on all issues important to you. Your affil iation with the MSA and your opinions DO MATTER! We will continue to accept trail and POI updates throughout the season– Remember to send all things related to the App to trails@ mesnow.com . We encourage all clubs to let us know about trail openings/closures, hazards and other issues as they pop up. Don’t for get to approach your local business members about getting their name on a POI in the App. Enjoy the snow and Ride Safe! Brent H ello Everyone, Well it seems REALLY good to be writing this article knowing

From the President

Trails@mesnow.com and Brent, Mike or John will make sure it gets done. We have also been busy with Monthly Director’s Meetings and a few Regional Meetings as well. It has been non-stop for our Lobbyist James Cote and funding chair Matt Stedman with several bills on the table over at the Statehouse concerning our snowmobiling community, always looking for ways to pump more money into the Snowmobile Program and ultimately back into the hands of our Clubs. Stay tuned for updates on these in Matt’s article or at an upcoming E-board and Director’s Meeting. Speaking of Director’s Meetings, one more left next month before our Annual Meeting in April and it should be a good one! March will take us to “The County” more specifically Van Buren on Saturday the 14th for a Showcase Ride during the day and the Director’ Meeting and dinner to follow that night. It should be a fun time so make your reservations quickly. Well that’s all for now folks, have a good rest of your month and remember my door is always open, so if you have anything that you would like to share, or if you just want to talk Snowmobiling please reach out to me I would love to hear from you. Thank you, Mark We at the MSA have been giving feedback on the Trails Bond round two grant application processes. Do not wait for round 2 to begin your thought process or project determination. Every club should understand how this works and if it can assist them in trail rehabilitation or bridge work to ease the burden of their in-season grant. Reach out to a Maine Trails Program Ambassador with questions (https:// mainetrailscoalition.org/ambassadors). Once the department releases the open application date & updated guidance documents, we will get this out through a club email blast from the MSA. If your club has questions about what the MSA is doing, how other clubs function, how to use State resources, what can be done to assist in fundraising do not be afraid to ask. No one person or club knows everything. Network with others in your region, call/email or message one of the E-Board at MSA, we may not know the answer either, but someone can get a resource to help you & your club. If you have a question, problem, concern, or idea on snowmobiling in Maine, get in touch with me. You can contact me at the phone # or email listed below. Matt Stedman

Pretty much all the county open for riding. Frenchville is now joining the MSA. March meeting in Van Buren hosted by Gateway SC Membership: Eileen looking at 41 clubs not sent in membership yet. Presently have 6,513 families, 1,555 businesses, making a total of 8,068. Looks like only 20 memberships down from last year at this time. By region: Central 1,154, Coastal 974, Eastern 2,012, Northern 1,770, Western 2,149. Memberships coming well. If not see paper please check in with office may have been lost in the mail. Contest deadline February 28, everyone has someone that could be nominated for something. Question about going digital to submit membership? Working on some of that, some clubs send in just a rolling spread sheet but need to indicated what needs to be added at the office please highlight or something. Director of Operations & Safety: Al not in attendance. Having personal things going on. Any trail reports send to editor@mesnow.com, Al did get posters and Maine Tourism donated to get them printed. Office has been busy and business as usual processing memberships. Scholarship: Barry funds were given in the treasurer’s report. Still working on moving one account to a better account, but more to follow. Questions on the application; where is the form, who’s eligible and what’s the deadline? Deadline is April 1, 2026 and the application is on the MSA website, there will be 3 scholarships awarded in April. snowmobiles. And ride slow and easy. While out on the trail, remember to allow enough room between you and your riding partners. The clubs are doing a great job with their signage. We’ve come a long way from the old days. Everyone seems to be on the same page, and our universal signage is get ting positive comments. We need to be aware of other sleds and people walking, cross-coun try skiing, and mountain biking on our ITS trails and other local trails as well. Be prepared with a first aid kit, survival kit, and fundamental items to protect yourself from any other incidents that may happen on the trail. Spare gas, an extra drive belt, a tool kit, duct tape, zip ties, a flashlight, food, and water. We’ve had one fatality, and that’s one too many. Our new safety signs will be available soon, thanks to the folks at the State of Maine Tour ism. They are sponsoring the program this year. A big thank you to them. When it only snows in certain areas, that means lots of traffic. Be aware of the other guy, check your mirrors often, make sure your lights work, and don’t distract yourself while playing with the buttons on your new sled. If you travel to a destination point, we want you to ride back as you came, with no bumps or bruises. Don’t turn into a statistic. Let me know if I can help. Be safe out there. AL

Trails: Brent talking about trails & app at once. Got stuff going on between inspections starting and the app. Do you have your groomer certification? Go to YouTube and take a test and get it to Joe’s office. App is opening up green, hopefully after the storm more, green to come. Development ITS 82 West out of Newry not an option there’s a bridge out & can’t get through (taken off the app map for this season), major reroute around the east side of Scoodic lake on ITS82/83 due to logging this season see article on the reroute. ITS89 through Oxford does not exist this year & probably going to be rerouted through West Paris next year. John Monk, Mike Grass & Brent been inundated with lots of data for the app. ALL updates email to trails@mesnow. com! Sections with reroute, new trail, etc. must be send in by club president or trail master or designee of the club (clubs need to be associated with the MSA to be on the app). File should be GPX format and can be done in the app. Polaris ride command will be getting our data updates weekly. Report the trip in 1 direction preferred in sections and name it. What about pictures? There are features in the app that have not been fully explored but this season is main concern to get the trails on the app, but small details like that will come later. Trail inspectors can send in any discrepancies when doing inspections. State inspectors have been out there and they have shared all their data as one giant file so MapGears is going to break it down to more manageable pieces, so it’s being worked out. As of Tuesday (Jan 20th) was just shy of 10,000 app downloads & of those 2,500 are paid subscriptions. Funding: Matt talk about MTP grant program (bond question 4) round 1 been awarded so work can start. Round 2 in the works looking to be available in February and deadline in June. Round 2 will have some changes in the application. Be thinking of project for trail rehabilitation or bridges. Any questions please reach out to one of the four ambassadors; Matt Stedman, Al Swett, Paul Kennedy or Shanna Towle. Question on round 1 about how some projects were covered. Some fall under trail head projects. Hospitality & Hall of Fame: Gail if anyone has someone in your club to nominate, please send in an application. Did send out some cards. Gave a joke. New Business: Funding/Legislation: LD1547 revised bill in work, asking for money from general fund, big ask to put more money on the trails, IF&W think the tiered early registration

could cause issues & giving push back, goal is to put increases to split 83% to trail fund and municipal grants then 17% going toward capital equipment grants. About 35% of people register early (prior to Dec 15) and 65% after. Summary LD1547 is a tiered increase in early registration with deadline of December 15th. Alan Swett 207-872-7282 234 County Rd, Waterville ME 04901 snowtraveler@roadrunner.com W ell, folks, our January thaw is over, and hopefully a real Maine winter will appear! We started off in November and December, which were snowy and cold, but the Happy New Year month was not to our liking. As a result, we had a few serious accidents. We need to ride with caution; the first part of the season is traditionally a rough start to the sea son. Riders need to get reacquainted with their

I t is amazing what cold weather and snow on the ground can do for memberships. Liz in the office and Eileen remotely have been enter ing memberships steadily. It is great to see that people still support the snowmobile clubs and MSA by sending in memberships. MSA is a strong believer in club support and doing what it can to promote snowmobiling in the state.

MSA Lobbyist / Capitol Report

David Watson • 207-205-1558 412 Roberts Ridge Rd, E Waterboro, ME 04030 Dwatson6841@gmail.com H ow about all the snow across the state?? Mother nature must like us again, Clubs in the Coastal Region are out packing and grooming the trails. It’s great to see all your dedication to our sport giving us great trails to ride. Thank you to all coastal clubs. Have you joined the MSA trails app yet? If you go to MSA webpage it will show you how to download your trail system. With that you can navigate the trails right from your phone. It even highlights gas and restaurants. If you haven’t done, please do so. Did I mention it’s free? Yup free so what are you waiting for? Enjoy your trails ride safe Ride right and keep on dancing . I’m going to end by saying that the third week in February is school vacation week, a time when many people visit Aroostook County to ride our amazing trails. If you’re in the area that week riding just keep in mind that you’re not the only one on the trails. You’ll probably encounter riders of all different ages and from all over the United States here enjoy ing the same thing you are. Let’s be cautious and respectful of one another, ride within our means, and stay on our side of the trail. Just remember one of those sleds you pass could belong to someone riding for their very first time. I hope everyone has a great riding sea son and remember to always ride right, ride safe and ride sober. Until next time!!! Nick should have been sent out to the recipients as they started their second semester. This also serves as a reminder that applica tions for this year’s awards need to be post marked by April 1 st . We are hearing there are many delays in the postal service, so we STRONGLY SUGGEST you do the paper work NOW. You can also access the applica tion online and submit it that way. PLEASE make sure ALL required documents are in cluded with the application. It has been asked in the past how the ap plications are awarded. When an applicant accesses the paperwork they will see a score sheet to use as a guideline. This is the same score sheet all Scholarship Fund members use to rate every applicant. Then the nine score sheets are tallied and averaged with the high est scores receiving the scholarships. The Scholarship Fund Committee will award three $1500 scholarships this year based on those average scores. For details on the scholarship fund and the application process, you can check out the MSA website. The Fund Committee encour ages everyone to apply and re-apply. It is the goal of the Fund to assist in furthering edu cational opportunities for all MSA members. of the meeting, they were excited to join the association and become our newest member club. Be sure to check out their Antique Win ter Bash, held on February 15 th from 10 am - 2 pm at their club house on 10 Paradis Ave. They will be serving ployes, pulled pork, hot dogs and baked beans. There will be a 50/50 drawing along with raffle prizes. Be sure to follow the Frenchville Snowmobile Club on Facebook for more information. This year’s Northern Region Showcase Ride & Dinner meeting is on Saturday, March 14 th , hosted by the Gateway Snowmobile Club in Van Buren. The ride will begin at 9:30 am. Everyone should meet at their four-corner intersection on ITS 105 where the large spon sor board is located. From there the ride will head north with a lunch stop and then loop back into town on the club trails. For those needing a place to unload your sleds, a park-and-ride is available at the bottom of Popular St, next to the water district building. In the evening the meeting will be held at the Van Buren Com munity Center with social hour beginning at 5, dinner at 6 and the meeting starting at 7. A Zoom option may be available for those who can’t attend in person. Please RSVP with Liz in the MSA office or with the Gateway Snow mobile Club if you plan to attend so they can get a headcount for the meal. The club will be putting out a social media post with more information in the coming days.

Matt Stedman 207-557-1921 (call or text) PO Box 621, Ashland ME 04732 Stedman.matt@jdirving.com

James Cote MSA Lobbyist I t has been a busy month working on funding sources for our snowmobile clubs. Lets start by talking about the Maine Trails Program grant. Round #1 awards have been announced and are available on the state of Maine website: https://www.maine.gov/dacf/ parks/grants/maine-trails-program.shtml There are 4 of us at MSA who are signed up to be Maine Trails Program ambassadors, willing to help others through the grant pro cess, so we are on calls with the Maine Trails Coalition and the State of Maine almost monthly to listen & provide feedback on the process. Round #2 applications should be announced soon but DO NOT wait for this to get your club(s) ready. Round #2 will have some changes & updates from round #1, but the core of the grant is the same so you can use round #1 guidance to prepare ahead of the round #2 application release. Please do not pass up a chance to get a project in. This grant works great for bridge rebuilds/replacements or a segment of your trail that has fallen into disrepair. Second item that has been keeping us busy is the MSA funding bill LD1547 to close the $3 million funding gap between the clubs’ expenses and current funding. The bill started as a funding request from the sales tax gen erated by snowmobiles. Last session that got referred to the ACF committee and held over to this winters’ session. The snowmobile pro gram has not had any increase since 2021, and

the Eastern Region do. In January I held a regional meeting at the Eastern Maine Snowmobile Club. The atten dance was great with many clubs in atten dance. The nightly door prize went to the Charleston Stump Jumpers SC. My thanks to Brent Spaulding for conducting a mini trail signing section and for promoting the MSA Trails app. Also, thanks to Mike Grass who was uploading info into the trails app as the meeting was going on. I enjoy regional meet ings as they are less formal and people have a chance to speak to other clubs. By the time you read this there will have been fun events that have taken place in this region. If the weather cooperated there was another regional meeting in Dennysville on Feb. 5 th . The club offered to do a baked chicken dinner for those in attendance. On Feb. 7th there was an Eastern Region Show case ride held in the Millinocket, Medway, Jo-Mary area. Thanks Charlie Huntington for being one of the ride leaders. There was a groomer Rodeo at the East Branch Snow Rovers, and the Feb. Directors meeting was held at the Northern Timber Cruisers. It was also winter carnival week in Millinocket area and I am sure there were many other events around the region. Look for updates/ pictures from these events in the March paper as they haven’t happened as I write this. It doesn’t seem possible that there are only a couple months left in this season. Time sure flies by. Clubs- get your nominations in for the contests that are awarded at the annual meeting in April. Scholarship applicants- get those applications in now. Everyone try not to wait until the last minute because the postal service is slow and your nominations/applica tions may not make it in time. That’s it for this month. Be safe and enjoy the riding everyone. Support the clubs and the MSA. Until March, Eileen We hope this will help clubs substantially if passed. We also understand that no single change will solve all the club’s funding con cerns and we will continue to listen and gather feedback and advocate for you in Augusta! Matt Stedman and James Cote, MSA Lobbyist you all know your clubs’ expenses have been climbing every year. Over the summer we knew we had to make some language changes to ensure we could move forward for more funding and switched gears to an early and in-season split fee regis tration format, which would go into effect for the ‘27/’28 season if it ultimately passes. One that respects the family &/or budget minded rider by keeping current price structure for those who purchase by December 15th but increases it December 16th (by inflation rate from 2020-2026) to $70 for residents and $150 for non-residents. The increase will be split between the trail fund and capital equip ment grants that feed our clubs. We also asked for general fund money, but that was not in the cards this session. This change has the potential to increase the funding to the program around $1 million. We have a unanimous “ought to pass” vote out of committee in the last week of January and now wait for the final language review and votes in the house & senate. We still have a ways to go in this process, but things are looking positive right now.

B y the time you read this it is hoped that the Scholarship Fund Committee has worked through some slight challenges that were dis covered in late Nov., early Dec. Also, by this time, the scholarships awarded in April 2025

Nick Morrill, 207-554-0074 406 Main Street, Stockholm ME 04783 landscaper9791@gmail.com H ello, Once again from the Northern Region. As I sit and write this article, the Patriots have punched their ticket back to the Super Bowl and high school basketball tournaments are only a few weeks away. Snowmobiling is in full swing throughout The County. While the snowpack varies from north to south and east to west there is riding available through out the region. If we could get a solid eight inch storm with no wind, the fields in the cen tral and eastern portions of the area would be in really good shape so please keep doing your snow dances. Club houses have been active holding week end breakfasts, afternoon lunches and evening dinners, which is great to see. If you’re riding or visiting The County be sure to support one of these events. I’d like to give a shoutout to Caribou Snowmobile Club for another suc cessful radar run event supporting their schol arship, North Star Motorsports for another fun and exciting Star City 100 and Tame the Track Tour for a great race event. A big MSA welcome to the Frenchville Snowmobile Club. I recently attended one of their club meetings and talked to them about the new MSA Trails App and about the MSA as a whole and what to do on a daily bases to support our clubs and members. We get snow, it rains and we lose the snow, it turns bitterly cold and windy, then it snows again but only light fluffy stuff and so on it goes. I am writing this near the end of January and in the last four days it has snowed, froze, thawed, snowed again and then turned extremely cold with wind chills well below zero. Okay you two it is time to give us what we want and need: decent temperatures and snow that is easy to pack and groom!! Eastern region clubs are doing what they can with what they have. I know there is rid ing and grooming going on in many parts of the region and other places where they are still in the wait mode. Hopefully by the time you are reading this all parts of the region and the state have great riding conditions. In the meantime, clubs are holding meetings, serving suppers and breakfasts, planning fund-raising events and submitting memberships! I have said it before and will say it again and again- I can’t be more proud of the work the clubs in

It’s great when clubs can share ideas and plans and to stay connected. That’s all for this month but maybe I’ll meet you on the trails. If you have any questions about the trails/grooming you are welcome to call me or by husband, Mickey at 764-1236. Mickey is the club president and also grooms. He can give you an update on the local trails. Stay safe and stay right. Sue Maynard Secretary Despite the low snow totals we’ve received so far, the trails are in good shape. The cold weather has really helped build and maintain a solid base, and our groomers are making the most of what we have. Both groomers have been going out daily (weather permitting) roll ing out the white carpet. A big thank-you to Glenn and the guys who are busy keeping the trails in the best shape possible. Your time and dedication do not go unnoticed. Our January event featuring Chad the Hyp notist was an absolute blast! Thank you to all the volunteers who bravely stepped up to the stage and helped make the night such a suc cess-especially Caitlyn, Chrissy, and Eric, who kept the crowd laughing for a full two hours. We may have had someone take a nap in the crowd, as she may have gotten hypno tized after leaving the stage-you know who you are! You were all amazing sports! The chicken stew went over very well. A special thank-you to Carrie Wall for volunteering to help cook the stew, Tara Cusack for provid ing desserts, and Kristi Dunham for setting up and keeping everyone on track. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Portage PORTAGE LAKERS sc Portage Lake, ME funding for trails, believe me the MSA officers work tirelessly on this. There is a bill in the legislature right now, LD 1547, to increase registration fees. Yes, we are taxing ourselves, BUT we are going to get quite a few bucks out of all the free loaders out there that won’t even join a club. So folks, you wonder what the MSA does for you, if you didn’t get the answer out of last month’s paper, think long and hard about where the trail money comes from, yes the STATE, however if we, the MSA, wasn’t constantly fighting for you I am, not sure what would happen. SO WE NEED YOU “ALL” TO BE MSA SUPPORTERS. I appreciate all the input from clubs and take your concerns seriously, don’t ever stop checking with me about your concerns, I will look into them with our entire executive group of MSA loyalists. What a great meeting the January Director’s Meeting was. We had 58 people in attendance, great supper put on by the NORWAY TRACKERS. A lot of good questions were asked and a lot of good answers, I felt everyone there was left with their bellies full and their minds refreshed with what the MSA does. What a great group of volunteers we have. So, bring on the BIG ONE today, and let’s all get outside and play. Till next time, GOD BLESS, Jerry Major Here we are again, wishing for more snow! The trails are thin, and even after grooming, the snow disappears quickly. Please ride courteously and safely. Slow down and ride the conditions we have so we can all enjoy the trails and ride again tomorrow. A big thank you to Steve and the Clinton crew for hosting a recent meeting. We all shared the same concerns, and it’s clear that every club is working hard to finish preparations. When the snow does come, we’ll be ready! On a somber note, I want to offer my condolences to the Jackman Power Sports family for their loss. Dave was a true legend in our community. Thank you all for what you do as club workers and MSA members. Your dedication keeps our region strong. Ron Nunes H ello Central Region Members,

Memberships still coming in and sitting at 90. The Splanman is alive. More next month. Jim Splan Go Pats ROCKABEMA SNOW RANGERS Patten, ME Well, the New Year has started out white and wonderful!! It’s been an interesting month to say the least. The temps have either been Spring like or frigid temperatures making it hard to breathe. This year, winter is here!!! I have seen lots of sledders in the area and new rid ers coming into town. Everywhere you look the town is bustling with visitors from every where. If no one has said it, “Welcome and thanks for sledding here!” This week’s meeting was full of informa tion. Les came and gave us a run down on how the new trails app works and let us know about areas on the trails that either needed signage or extra work. With the winds blowing, the rain melting our bases, the trails have strug gled. With this new snow coming and the cold weather, I am hoping to see things back in tip top shape. I would like to say a special “thank you” to Charlie Kenney, Mike Hanson, and Duane for working so hard fixing the railroad bed trail that was washed out by those darn beavers, getting our equipment up and running and grooming trails. If there were others there, thank you as well. There will be new signage going out for sledders to pay close attention to. Please remember to watch for those signs, they keep accidents from happening. If the sign says “STOP”, then stop. If it says “CAUTION” watch ahead. Please we don’t wish to hear about any injuries or deaths on these trails. Snowmobiling is a fun sport, but like all sports

your helmet is on your head for a reason. We are still looking for a few more takers on the $50.00 raffle tickets. The winnings are pretty great and it benefits the purchase of a new groomer and garage that is desperately needed. Please contact me, Carilynn Hanson 2036876403; either text or call. You can also check out our webpage for other ways to pur chase tickets. The drawing will be in February. Well that is about it for now – Happy Trails Everyone Carilynn Hanson We are finally snowmobiling and the trails are great. It just took a little longer before we got enough snow, but that seems to be a pat tern these days. But our trails were all packed before we began to groom. Our grooming crew and members worked hard to get the blown down trees removed from a recent windstorm and are getting into their rhythm of grooming. We had to reroute a trail due to a new housing development so that made for extra fall work also. There are always a few problems every year and it takes a diligent crew to keep the whole system ready when we need it. I hope your holidays were filled with laugh ter and love with your family and friends. It sure seems to creep up a little faster every year or maybe we’re getting a little older! I’m still just like a little kid, I can’t wait to get to snowmobile each year and I’ve had a few rides, but no long trips yet. Mainers need to have a hobby for the long winters, especially in the county. But all of the trails are look ing good and the clubs are all grooming. We have worked with the adjoining clubs and a few small problems have been taken care of. CHAPMAN RIDGE RUNNERS sc Chapman, ME
