Recreation Department

Recreation Department Overview 2019

Events: The rec department was fortunate to provide opportunities for the young members of the Mechanic Falls Community all year round.

Facilities: With the support of some great partners, like the Natural Sand Company and Atlantic Turf Care, all of our playing fields have been resurfaced and are considered the area’s best fields. All of our playing fields are convertible

and capable hosting baseball or softball games in a matter of an hour. This past fall we rebuilt the Ron Pratt Field and installed an irrigation system. The infield was also completely re-sodded and infield mix was installed for the base paths. All four fields have become a destination. The larger Babe Ruth Field has also been rented out by travel baseball teams due to its quality of play. The Jerry Coleman Field will be hosting the New England 10u Regional Tournament, as well as a state tournament this summer. Basketball: The 2019-20 Season saw over 80 participants from Pre K through 6th grade, continuing to be one of the most active seasons of the year. The program partnered with the varsity coaches of PRHS to attend skills & drills clinics each Saturday for the duration of the season. Additionally, Terri Cook created a skills & drills practice each Tuesday night for our 1st & 2nd graders to help them get ahead for next year.

The season ended with a pizza party celebration sponsored by Patch’s Variety, Dad’s Place and The Little Brick Pub with more than 200 people in attendance.

Softball: We had more than 40 young female athletes make up 4 very competitive teams (all had winning records). All teams had great participation from parents and athletes from the beginning to the end of the season. Additionally, we seamlessly incorporated players from Poland, Minot and Oxford to help give as many girls the opportunity to play as possible. We started with clinics in January and the last game was played in August.

Baseball: There were over 40 young men across 3 teams that participated in the Andy Valley Cal Ripken League. Some members of our teams went on to various all-star tournaments and had great success.

Tee Ball: Had 3 teams of players including more than 20 participants in tee ball. As an introduction, teams played each other and against Poland & Minot programs. Robyn Coleman created a special Thursday night

clinic to help the young players get assimilated to the game and start before the snow melted. The season culminated in an activity day where the three teams got together to celebrate with ice cream and popsicles. Soccer: For as long as anyone can remember, the weather held out and, although it got cold, the season was a success! There were just under 60 participants and all teams progressed well throughout the season. Jared Pinkham created a special indoor soccer activity for players to join with great success.
