Vintage Sled Display to Return to The MSA Snowmobile Show By Chris Ring I t’s all lining up perfectly folks… Accuweather’s long range forecast is predicting snowfall totals up to 25% higher than normal in both Boston and New York this winter. The editor of the “Old Farmer’s Almanac” is saying that winter 2021-2022 will be a “season of shivers” that could be “one of the longest and coldest that we’ve seen in years!” The “new” “Farmer’s Almanac” is saying that January “will turn cold and stormy, especially along the Atlantic Seaboard.” WILL IT JUST SNOW ALREADY?! We are all getting the itch, if you didn’t notice, and we hope you will come join us at the Augusta Civic Center on October 22nd-24th for the Mane Snowmobile Show. We’re very excited for the show to return this year, and along with it, a perennial favorite, the “Vintage Sled Display” is coming back too. Enthusiasts and collectors from all over the region will be sharing some of their favorite historical sleds and memorabilia. The “Big Four” manufacturers will each be well represented this year, but we also anticipate having some of the more obscure brands from the 60’s and 70’s on the floor. Some of the machines will be meticulously restored back to “like new” or “better than new” condition. Others will have a fine “patina” that provide subtle glimpses into the past. “The Wizard of Ah,” a 1970 Ski Doo Olympique, with its wild metallic purple paint job will also be back for people to sit and pose for photos on! Young or old, it doesn’t matter who you are, “The Wizard” is calling. A favorite part for many is chatting with people who remember when the sport was born. Conversations beginning with, “Remember when ‘so-and-so’ was riding a sled just like that in Bangor at Bass Park?” and “I can remember when everybody in the neighborhood had one of these things, because my neighbor down the street opened a dealership in his garage!” bring many warm smiles to the room. Many of our exhibitors enjoy talking about the history and relevance of the each of the sleds, something that many of our younger visitors really enjoy. Even if one doesn’t know who Carl Eliason, Edgar Hetteen, or Mickey Rupp are, it’s easy to see, and even easier to be amazed with how rapidly snowmo- biles evolved in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. Come take a walk down memory lane with us!
The 3 rd annual Big Woods Grass Drags By Lendell Buckingham T he 3 rd annual Big Woods Grass Drags event was held Septem-
dreds with approximately 1000 peo- ple traveling to watch the racing action on the grass track and with over 80 registered sleds, the day was definitely a success for the vol- unteers who spent many hours in preparation for this event. While tak- ing in the racers, non-profit vendors were on hand to provide food and beverages so people in attendance would not have to go away hungry or leave the venue for a quick bite to eat. Many local businesses and clubs benefitted from the outpour- ing of support, such as: Ashland Fire
Department, Portage and Ashland ATV clubs, Ashland Class of 2021 Project Grad, Maine Snowmobile Association, Portage Hills Country Club, along with other local clubs and church groups. A big thank you to all! Both the Ashland and Portage clubs are looking forward to hosting the event next year with new ideas and added events so be sure to fol- low and like Big Woods Grass Drags on Facebook so you can stay up to date!
ber 18th in Ashland and was coordi- nated by the Ashland Snowmobile Club and Portage Lakers working together to help raise funds for the upcoming snowmobile season. It was also a great way to get snow- mobilers and winter enthusiasts alike geared up for another exciting year of riding. The weather may not have coop- erated for a portion of the day, but it did not dampen anyone’s spirit! Spectators turned out by the hun-

Groomer Spotlight – Central Region Randy Petrin By Missy Newman
F or the past 15 years, we have been very fortunate to have Randy Petrin step up and help at the Border Riders Club in all its trail work endeavors. Randy has lived in Long Pond (the Jackman area) for the past 40 years or so. He moved here from Biddeford, Maine with his family and started Long Pond Camps and Guide Service. For years, Randy has run his recre- ational camps focusing on hunting seasons and snowmobile recreation. Randy himself is a Maine guide and enthusiast – he lives for the hunt – not just to shoot the game, but to see to it that every hunter has the best oppor-
tunity for a successful hunt. This goes along with snowmobiling. Randy knows the Jackman area like the back of his hand – meaning he has prob- ably traveled every woods road and knows the connectivity of the area. As for snowmobiling and trails, Randy is well known for his racing talent on the oval and cross country tracks. He has a vast knowledge of the sport and how to ride both off and on the trail. Since 2006, Randy and Long Pong Grooming took on maintaining the south trail system for the Border Riders Club. Since that time, Randy has become a large force for the club
in seeing to the maintenance of all recreational trails – finding any spare time from his business to repair and make new trails and to upkeep the vast bridges we have. In summary, Randy Petrin has taken the club under his wing, to make sure that we are prepared for each season, by maintaining equipment, signing trails, runny heavy equipment for trail repair, and during the season making sure they are in top shape for all the recreational enthusiasts. Thank you Randy for all your hard work!
If you know an extraordinary groomer, we want to know about them too. Give them a shout out! Email your submission to editor@mesnow.com. Also, don’t forget about sending in your nominations for the 2021-2022 Groomer of the year.

From the President
Andover and anywhere south of CD-1 on ITS 89. My goal this winter is to get to one or all of these places. What/where is on your snowmobile bucket list? The last few years, coastal/southern Maine haven’t had a very long riding season. Luckily, with a relatively short trailer tote to Newport, Skowhegan or Millinocket, you could hit the trails and head north to a deeper snowpack. Last winter, even with Covid protocols, restaurants and hotels were able to provide services to Maine snowmobilers. Was it different, yes, but the experience was still the same, Maine Snowmobiling equals Awesome! Have I gloated enough here? Have I said I think Maine snowmobiling is Awesome enough here? Maybe, but I love Maine Snowmobiling and I love the people who make Maine Snowmobiling happen and I love the people who enjoy Maine Snowmobiling. Now that I’m done gloating about Maine, please plan to attend the Maine Snowmobile Show in Augusta, buy some Super Raffle tickets and get the sled and gear ready to go. Only another month or so before the white stuff is here. Ok let’s head to the New Portland Fair…. it was awesome! The Lexington Highlander’s SC sold raffle tickets and showed the Ski- Doo sled which brought in lots of interest and money to their bank account. Another great event made possible by Maine Snowmobilers. The area VP’s have been busy as well. Jack Lord, Larry & Eileen Lafland, Jim Boyce, Dave Watson, and Matt Stedman went into the membership kit delivery service. They saved us lots of money on postage by delivering many of the boxes to you folks. If you did not receive one, please let us know. Would also like to thank Mark Chinnock, Peter Ford, Bob Flagg and everybody else who helped. The September meeting in Saco was a success. Great food and put on by an awesome club! It was wonderful seeing you all. And by the way if anybody is out for a nature walk on the Cumberland SC trail system and hear a harmonica playing in the woods it’s my old buddy Bill Brazier. He is practicing to be as good as Boston based Richard Salwitz, known as the legendary Magic Dick he is one of the best players in the Country! Keep practicing buddy!! If you’d like to volunteer to help out at the show give us a call so we can sign you up. This event is an all hands on deck and we can use your help. Please call the office if you need anything. If I don’t know the answer I’ll try to find someone who does. I Can’t thank you enough for all you do! Be safe out there, AL Think Snow (and Cold) Mike, MSA President clean, professional, and objective discussion on this subject. Whatever the outcome ends up, the MSA can’t be more appreciative for the decades of landowner support. Each month I try to drum up some sort of info that will help our industry responsibly and economically grow and here’s a topic that falls right in that arena: Available Grants. Most clubs know of the four grants available from the state. (If you don’t, attend the MSA show on Sat, Oct. 23 rd and you’ll go away a professional). USDA has thrown in a twist as of recent with many receiving some sort of aid, but the legwork is a bit more extensive. It’s been an incredible boost though! However, have you checked in with your manufacturers? There is no doubt without them; this sport would be seeing a total different outlook. On some quick research, Ski Doo offers up a program called PASS (Protect, Access, Sustain and Support) www. ski-doo.com/us/en/snow-pass-grant-program. If you haven’t noticed that Ski Doo is riding a high wave at the moment you must clearly have your helmet on backwards. I’m sure they Welcome October to the gateway to winter. There a lots of projects going on, trail widening, new bridges, reroutes and getting Safety Committee Chair Report H ello Friends!
get new people excited about our sport. We all know how awesome it is. That is why we are the ones who need to spread the “Gospel” of snowmobiling in Maine. Give them a map, show them a Super Raffle ticket, tell them about riding to your favorite trailside restau- rant and your favorite scenic overlook. Tell them how nice your sled rides, how quiet it is and how warm the new clothing is without be- ing bulky. Plan a trip to the snowmobile show in Augusta and on the ride home in the car, plan a snowmobiling trip together to introduce them to our favorite winter pastime. Maine snowmobiling is some of, if not the best snow- mobiling east of the Mississippi. We need to spread the word, we need to tell everyone how great snowmobiling in Maine is T his season, the Maine Snowmobiler newspaper will feature different regions of the state with rides, places to stay, interesting venues and people that can make planning a snowmobile trip in Maine easy. We are also looking for guest writers to send in their favorite trips with stories and pictures for all of us to read and see. What better way to “know where to go”. I’ve ridden in a lot of places in Maine but my bucket list includes Bethel, Gilead, Rumford, Mexico, Fryburg, Cliff says we may not see it untill January because of the manufacturer being behind in their production. But, that’s ok it’s a great snowmobile in the 200 beginner class. Two trailers this year! Nitro Trailer from Pittsfield offered to donate to the club’s and MSA a 2022 - 12 foot Hybrid snowmobile trailer a beautiful white enclosed trailer with the drop down rear door an oversized front door and side man door it also has a front crank jack. What a gift! For the last 12 years our generous friends from Alcom in Winslow have come through again and donated another quality Maine built open sled trailer, Alcom/Sno-Pro is one great supporter to the clubs we can’t thank them enough. A $500.00 gift card from the great Kittery Trading Post rounds out the top prizes. Along with more generosity, there are gift cards and certificates from the dealers, motels, and other vendors from all over the state. The raffle is a big money maker for the clubs and a big thank you goes out to all the folks who make it happen. I attended a few events in September. The Lexington Highlanders SC fall chicken barbecue is a tradition, 280 dinners sold! The food is great and the club member’s making it happen are awesome! Sold a few raffle tickets there too! Off to Rockwood, The Blue Ridge Rider’s SC pig roast is a 5-pound weight gain night! The food was incredible the annual auction had some great prizes and it’s always great to see my old friends and make new ones! Ripley is a little club that makes it happen. Their auction brought in lots of cash for trail’s and groomer maintenance. They also had a great raffle sales day. We showed the Polaris/ Ski Doo and Nitro Trailer. A small club with 110% dedication and a great group of true friends! ready to tear into another year of preseason prep. If your one of these people, my hat is off to you. Additionally, the memberships are now starting to make the mailbox boil over. Thanks to all of you for your love and belief of such a great industry for our State. In the State Capitol area, there is not a lot to report at the moment but a huge shout out is in order to Debbie and Kerry Scates of Palermo. They have agreed to listen in on a brainstorming/round table discussion referenced the tabled Sunday Hunting for Landowners (LD-1033) and Approved Parties. MSA being a strong advocate for landowner rights seems fitting to at least be sitting at the table digesting everyone’s thoughts with this. We are trying as we speak to ink in the details of these meetings and will report back after discussions at our directors meetings on the topic. An outcome of these talks is slated to be brought forward sometime in January to the legislature so the timetable is rather quick. Weigh in if you wish. Many discussions of these ideas have surfaced in the past and there are many that hope to have a
would like that to continue. Without trails, that could (and would) be a small issue. Polaris also has a similar program called, with no surprise, “TRAILS”. (Trail development, Responsible riding,Access, Initiatives, Lobbying, and Safety) www.polaris.com/en-us/trails-application. I am sure the other manufacturers and even some outside aftermarket product companies would possibly support the cause as it 100% helps sustain the “big picture”. Now here’s your part… GO GET IT! Why not pump this money to Maine and improve our trails. If you need a letter of support, look me up! On one more front, the steering committee is seeking input for the upcoming editions of the newspaper. We try very hard at “Sharing the Wealth” of Maine, but could use some fresh input from all your clubs, town folk and riders. DON’T HOLD BACK! We know you’re out there from all the past years “showcase rides”. Take us and our audience to your secret snowmobiling paradise. Looking forward to a great season all, See you all at the show! Johnny Monk Heading into fall is also a good time to think about you home safety. Change you smoke alarm and C02 monitor batteries, do you have a fire extinguisher(s)? If you burn wood get your chimney cleaned, how about your oil fur- nace or other heat source, must be ready for a tune up? Make sure you have an escape plan in the event of a fire and a meeting spot when you get outside. Lots to do before winter gets here let’s get it done and do it safe. While you’re doing all this physical work please take the time to be safe. Wear your PPE. It only takes a few seconds to put on a pair of safety glasses, a pair of earplugs a good pair of boots and gloves! Take the time to do these few things and protect your body. While working on your sleds and groomer’s make sure, the equipment is secure if lifted with the proper jacks and blocking. Be aware of pressurized hydraulic systems and charged electrical components. Same at home when getting your sleds and trailers serviced if you do it yourself. October is a good month to check out your clothing and helmet. Maybe you need new a new jacket or snow pants with the MSA show coming up in a few weeks it will be the ideal time to buy new from the many vendors that will be there. I’ve already been asked to do a few safety classes in the area schools, this is a good sign from them to get the message out about snow- mobile safety. IF&W will also have classes available. It’s a good day when we team up with those folks. Last year we had six people die from acci- dents on our trail system. Six too many I say. It’s a tragedy. A sad time that effects all of us. Let’s be safer this year! Be careful and enjoy some of the best trails in New England!

H ello Snowmobilers! Lets get ready for the return of the MSA Show! There’s been a whole lot of interest from many vendor’s that want to get in and get back to business. I’m sure the customer’s will benefit from all the great deals that will be available. Hope to see you at the show. Lot’s going on at the MSA office. The raffle has some incredible prizes. The 2021 Polaris 850 from our friends at Team Woody’s in Topsham and Ryan from Polaris Industries. A 2022 Ski-Doo Renegade 600 EFI from Moosehead Motorsports in Greenville with added plug jack, tunnel protectors, higher windshield with mirror’s in traditional yellow and black makes it a great prize. We could not get a Z120 this year so we settled for a 2022 - Z200 from Kramer’s Arctic Cat in Sidney.

corner. All you have to do is take a walk in the woods on any given Sunday morning, in any given town from now until snowfall and you are sure to hear the buzz of chainsaws and the growl of machinery. This folks would be the sounds of hard working volunteers getting the trails ready, building bridges, brushing trails, rerouting and signing. All of this and much more happens each Fall in preparation of the first snowfalls of the season. Followed shortly thereafter by grooming, oh and more signing, more reroutes and let’s not forget talking with landowners, getting permis- sions, meeting new landowners, and there is always equipment maintenance, followed by more signing, brushing and building bridges. Finally getting to that rewarding point where we can reap the fruits of our labor and, yes Folks we ride, that’s right we ride! It might be February but we will ride. These are just the passions of our snow- mobiling Brothers and Sisters and most of us wouldn’t have it any other way, and do it because we love the sport and want to see it thrive. As far as the Trails Committee goes, we have been meeting via Zoom since August. The first order of business has been contacting all of the clubs around the State to find out if there is going to be any major trail Safety AL. Swett: A phone call came in from a Mississippi Combine operator showing interest in snowmobiling.Al said “Come on up, Buddy.” Seriously, folks we had six fatalities last season out of 88,000 registrations. They are mostly in January, when riders are rusty and getting back into riding. Time to check the smoke alarms. First aid kits should be available when doing preseason trail work and have one in the groomers. Steering Committee Chairman-John Monk: LD 280 bill sponsored by MSA. Want to thank Bob and Mary Cortell for speaking for the bill. Their personalized testimony was well received and made a difference. This bill puts the money where it needs to be, on the trails. Club grants have increased from $180 to $210 per mile. Candice at the BPR snowmobile program is doing a great job compiling data, and I hope are sending in memberships. Please make sure you send them in as soon as you get them so everyone that deserves one gets their MSA paper. The office gets calls asking where is my paper and when we check we find the memberships have not been sent in yet. Super raffle tickets are flying out of the office. This is such an easy way for clubs to make some money and not have to invest money to get money. Ask a local business member or the corner store if you can set up a display and sell there. Many are willing to help and all it takes from you is a little time in most cases. You get to keep half the money and send the other half to MSA. Some clubs bring in $1,000 or more to their funds just by selling Super Raffle tickets. This year’s prizes are great and many people want a new sled but can’t find one. Here’s their chance to win one and help out a snowmobile club as well. There’s a lot happening in October and as I write this the MSA Snowmobile Show in Augusta is still a go!! We couldn’t have one last year so the excitement is high this year. There are some new vendors as well as repeat ones that will be there. Come check it out and see what this season could bring. Come say “Hi” to me at the MSAbooth, as I will be there Friday and Saturday. At this point Larry and I also plan to be at the NH Grass drags and Water cross event in Epping, so come see what MSA has to offer. Get out membership renewed, join a club, and get ready for the season! Until November, Stay safe working on those trails! Eileen
changes that could affect the new ITS Trail map, so that we can produce the most accurate map possible. By the time you read this paper the new ITS Map will be printed and ready for distribution. You can get these maps by contacting the MSA office or getting in touch with your local club who should be able to help you. Better yet the best way to pick up a map is to come to the 2021 MSASnowmobile Show at the Civic Center in Augusta, October 22 nd ,2 3rd and 24 th , Like us on Facebook for more info, there will be plenty of maps there along with a host of other cool stuff. The Snowmobile Advisory Council steers the Capital Equipment funding to the applicants that rank highest in score, getting the grooming equipment where it is needed most. The projected budget will double from $500K to a million, all because of the LD280. This will put newer equipment on the trails. The small clubs work really hard for their funding. The Coastal Region really shows their enthusiasm for this sport. Preparing the trails by signing and brushing, whether they get any snow or a short three-week season, these clubs really show their love for the sport. MSA is staying neutral with the Sunday hunting bill. During hunting season a lot of clubs do their trail work on Sundays, but we feel we shouldn’t tell the landowner what they can and can’t do, which could compromise our privilege to use a trail on their land. MSA is looking for representation at the committee meetings. If interested contact John. Hall of Fame-Beth Bowie: Reaching out for volunteers for this committee. Can’t wait to see your nominations, they do carry over.
Most clubs’ have had the first meetings of the season and schedules of events are being set. If you have not been contacted yet, do not wait, reach out and see what you can do to lend a hand. Clubs and their dedicated membership are what make it all happen, without them we cannot continue to ride. Clubs all around the County are gearing up for this winter and hoping for a bit longer winter than last season provided, but they cannot do it alone. Every year those who have helped are getting older and there is always more work to be done. Don’t be afraid to step up. If you are not quite sure how you may fit it in to the club, just be up front & ask. Every club need all sorts of help, and you may just have the skills they need. As a club, share your success and challenges with the surrounding clubs, feed off each other and what we can learn from or leverage from others will make the whole even better. If you have a question, problem, concern, or idea on snowmobiling in “The County”, get in touch with me. You can contact me at the phone # or email below. I look forward to meeting as many folks who help drive snowmobiling in the Northern Region as possible, you are a hard- working crew and should be proud of the jobs you do. Eileen Lafland, 207-843-7813 PO Box 733, Holden ME 04429 llafland@midmaine.com H ere it is October and in just a few months, hopefully we will be enjoying what we all look forward to: frozen ground and lots and lots of snow covering it. The entire state is due for snow cover everywhere so let’s hope it happens this year. The excitement for it sure is high and people are looking to ride and get out of the house. Larry and I spent four days riding around the Eastern region delivering as many club pack- ets as we could. Thanks so much to Eastern regional directors Craig L., Gary D., John M. and Larry L. for assisting with this. Many, many thanks also to Ed R., Barry R., and Mike G. for also taking and delivering these. With 70 plus clubs in my region, I couldn’t have done it with- out all the help. It was great to talk snowmobil- ing with so many club people as it reinforced that people are eagerly waiting for the season to begin. By now all clubs should have all that info

H ello fellow snowmobilers, Are you all ready to go snowmobiling? The leaves are changing, and we’ve had at least one morning in the 30-degree range here in the County. A sure sign that snowmobile season is coming at us at a rapid pace. Also, the MSA snowmobile show is right around the corner, so we all get a chance to check out sleds, groomers, trailers, gear & accessories. I hope to see you there. Clubs have been hard at work all summer behind the scenes raising funds, talking with landowners, doing machine maintenance, filling out grant forms and the list goes on.

safe and make notes about signage for the new trails and detours around logging areas. Now I need to ask for something from the clubs that will help us moving forward. Almost all clubs give us a post office box as an address, which is fine. We also need a physical address so we can deliver the boxes we give out at the beginning of the season. These boxes contain the paperwork for the upcoming season and cost us quite a bit in postage. There are 59 clubs in the Central region, the postage to mail them would be in access of $880.00 and after the first of the month there is supposed to be an increase in postage rates again. This will also be a help if you need extra tickets or posters delivered during the season. The physical address can be a club member, Town Hall, or a supporting business. Thank you for your help. I need for everyone to know I am here and will help in any way I can. You can call or e-mail me at any time. I check my e-mails in the morning and again in the afternoon. Keep Smiling, Be Safe Jack Lord

H ere we are in October the leaves are changing and that means one thing it’s time to get ready for the season. I see a lot of clubs already out doing trail work and getting equipment in shape for another great season. But what I would like to talk about is new trails or reroutes. A lot of clubs here in the western region are faced with these problems. It might be new landowners, people building new houses or garages on their property. Yes, their property. With that being said it doesn’t matter if you have been riding on the same trail for the last 20 or so years times are changing and so are landowners. The clubs have been working hard to get you from point A to point B. When I say clubs, it’s the same handful of volunteers and I thank you all. So while riding this year when a trail has changed there is a reason behind it. Respect the landowners and the clubs hard work. Stay on the marked trail not doing this puts a lot of pressure on the clubs with upset landowners. I would suggest to all that ride reach out to your local club to see what has changed and what you can help with. Remember we are all volunteers be respectful to clubs and landowners. Don’t forget the Snowmobile show October 22-24 at the Augusta Civic Center hope to see you there.
