TRANSFER STATION Mechanic Falls Transfer Station 2020 was a challenging year for everyone; this was not different for transfer station operations. The COVID pandemic required us to address concerns regarding social distancing and handling of materials. Immediate response included limiting the disposal area to one car at a time as well as halting recycling. Once more was known about the virus and its transmission, we were able to open most services while implementing some restrictions in order to reduce risk. Some changes were made this year to improve the look and function of the transfer station as well. We relocated the mixed glass and cleaned up the area to improve the visual aspect as people enter the station. The decking around the compactor machine was rebuilt and lowered to increase safety. While new materials were used to complete this project, the town staff provided the labor saving a significant amount of money for construction. In addition to all the changes made and challenges faced, we were still able to complete our mission by accepting and transferring 706.14 tons of materials (see below), 13,165 pounds of electronics, 547 tires, and 96 units of freon.
