42 Island Residents received their first COVID-19 vaccines on February 17 th at the Rec Center. A huge thank you to the CART Covid vaccine subcommittee for all their hard work in coordinating this successful clinic. It was heartening to see many of our frailer island residents, for whom a trip to the mainland for a vaccine would not have been possible, happily seeing folks they had not seen for many months - while getting their first jab! Well done all! Congratulations to Josh Doughty!!! Josh has been chosen “2021 Year of the Nurse Award Recipient“ from Northeastern University. Josh is getting ready to graduate from the Northeastern University’s School of Nursing. As part of the University’s Co- Op Program, he chose to compete a co-op working with COVID patients in the ICU at Maine Medical Center. In receiving this honor, the University stated “You have attested to the way in which you have gone above and beyond in your service to the School of Nursing and the nursing profession during 2020 with its unprecedented challenges”.

CTC recog- nizes that some people are not traveling to the mainland fre- quently. We will assist with apply- ing 2021 sticker if needed. Please call our office for more information. Also, the Designated Commuter Area on Cousins Island is for people who applied and received a Com muter Sticker only. If you do not have a Commuter Sticker, please do not park in the designated com- muter spots.

We are currently accepting applications for: Part Time Bus Drivers (A Class B CDL with passen- ger endorsement is required.) Part Time Deckhands Both drivers and deckhands must be available to work some nights and weekend shifts and are required to pass a pre- employment drug test. CTC offers competitive pay along with many benefits, includ- ing free boat fare as well as parking and barging benefits. Preference for the deckhand positions will be given to year- round or seasonal residents of Chebeague Island. Fill out an application on the CTC website or call the CTC office for more information. We are looking for dedicated people to join our team. We’re proud to serve the Chebeague community. Come join a great crew!

Reminders from the Ferry Crew Please have your tick- ets out and ready as you are boarding the ferry! Because our crew often uses time between trips for cleaning, mainte- nance and training, and to process tickets, we must delay boarding until 10 minutes prior to departure. Passen- gers may not be on the ferry without the boat crew present. Please wait to board until the deckhand calls you down! For your own safety, please remain seated until the ferry is tied up, especially during rough weather.

Ferry and Bus Cancellation Notices How to keep informed

Occasionally, adverse weath- er conditions require CTC to cancel ferry and/or bus trips. While we try to give advance notice of cancellation (minimum of 60 minutes), there are times when safety concerns require cancellations with shorter notice. If we must cancel service, we will post the notice on our website and FB page and ask for posting on chebeague.org . Emails and texts will be sent to those who have signed up for CTC alerts. (We currently notify over 800 people.) If

interested, please sign up on the cancellations page of chebeaguetrans.com. The first bus trip is always cancelled when Yarmouth schools cancel or delay open- ing. Other bus service cancel- lations will be posted in the same manner as ferry cancel- lations. If the bus is can- celled, but the ferry is still running, Rt. 1 users may park at Cousins. Their vehi- cles should be moved back to Rt. 1 as soon as possible.

New book: Reading the Bible from the Margins by Miguel De La Torret This introduction to “liberation theology” focuses on how issues involving race, class, and gender influence our understanding of the Bible. Describing how “standard” readings of the Bible are not always acceptable to people or groups on the “margins,” this book offers valuable new insights into biblical texts today.

Marty’s Memories - The Tides

If we didn’t live on an island I wonder if we would ever think about the tides. I do know that since I have lived on the island year round, inching up to twenty years now, I have thought of little else! I have watched with both wonder and horror as that great muscle of water pulled and eased its force around the small piece of land that holds my nest in place. At first it was amazing, seeing my view of the water expand as first birches then oaks exposed their roots and then let go, taking precious soil and wild blueberries plants with them. The panorama looking out to the bay now includes so many islands I used to only see when out in the water: Bustin’s, French’s, Lower Goose, the Goslings, LittleWhaleboat, Big Whaleboat, Mark Island, Eagle. The sun’s light paints these land masses in different ways at different times of day, sometimes so dramatically that it makes you gasp. Then, when a wind storm brews and rain gathers and falls in immense quantities, the tide joins in, especially when the moon is full and it is exceptionally high, and adds her might to reshaping the landscape. When I was young and here for the summer, the tides were my timepiece. I yearned for high tide when the rocks would be covered and I could easily slip into its cooling water. There was a long band

of luxurious sand along the top of our beach then and people of all ages would gather and visit and play. There was lots of screaming coming from Hamilton beach in those days, kids squealing at the thrill of it all, adults at the huge shock of the cold water. I really should not put the blame of the erosion on the never- ending, never-changing-its course tides. They just continue to do what they are programmed to do. I really don’t believe the tides are taking my land from me, anyway. I think it is that other tide, the one underground. The one that Chebeague was named for, ‘land of many springs’. That water is always present, always moving toward the lower parts of the island, the banks at its shores. Its might is almost as strong as the tides, so they do their work together, always on the move. Now it is difficult to walk on my end of the beach. During and after these punishing storms I always hope ‘our’ sand will be back. That rarely happens and if it does, it’s gone in the next storm. Each time, walking alongside the banks on the shore, I notice more tree roots exposed and whole juniper bushes torn away, tossed aside like old brooms. The middens expose more thin white clam shell pieces and of course I look, but never find any arrowheads.

Lent and Easter 2021 Our worship series will be “Cultivating and Letting Go” where we explore Lent as a season of spiritual gardening, inviting God to unearth in us what lies fallow, what needs to be tended, and what needs to die for new life to emerge.

We have resources available to accompany you during your Lenten journey. Please contact the church office for your Lent-in-a-Box packet, which includes a weekly devotional, a finger labyrinth, prayer beads, coloring pages, and seed paper crosses (which we’ll use in worship during Lent!) Also, save the date for two Visio Divina (or “divine seeing”) sessions – Tuesday, March 9 th at 4 PM and Saturday, March 27 th at 10 AM . Much how Lectio Divina invites us to hear God speaking to us through the words of Scripture, we pair Bible passages with artwork to consider where we’re encountering God. These will be held over Zoom - Meeting ID: 815 200 0968 Palm Sunday is March 28 th , Maundy Thursday is April 1 st , Good Friday is April 2 nd , and Easter Sunday is April 4 th . If more than one person claims the lot through either lineal or collateral descent, all parties must prove their connection to the original owner of the lot by providing documentation. 2. Claimants must reach an amicable decision regarding use of the lot and file a written and signed agreement with the Town Clerk before a burial permit will be issued. 3. Should the parties not reach an agreement, the Town will not arbitrate, and the parties may pursue their claim through legal means. 3Though the Statute refers to “perpetual care and maintenance”, this is not the issue here; it is abandonment. Chebeague has always provided care and maintenance, whether the owner of the plot has paid for perpetual care or not. *Town of Chebeague Island Cemetery Rules and Regulations Administration 7 g.
