Tens of thousands of immigrants came to New England during the 1600s. But few histories have detailed the lives of those who came by force. The Involuntary American chronicles the life and times of Thomas Doughty, an illiterate Scottish foot soldier who was captured and shipped to the New World against his will.
All lectures are free, but donations to the program are kindly accepted.

Marty’s Memories - Something Back by Marty Trower
There is a constant on an island. The tides - the sounds of each on the rocks, tumbling or slapping differently on the beach, - and the winds, so easily felt, so changeable. I guess I should say two constants, but they seem to go together and yet they are each so stubbornly independent. Come to think of it, constant isn’t a very good word to use for either, or is it? It’s hard not to be aware of these forces or rhythms of nature when you live on an island. It is when I am touched by a morsel of memory that I realize they are often weather related, and they have a lot to do with the subtle senses. But It is the other rhythm, the lift and slide of a fiddle that is as strong for me as the pull of the tides. It’s the feel of the stone fireplace and the heat it tries to hold at the hotel - when it was called the Hillcrest- a wood fire is slowly crackling: I tip-toe across the shiny wood floor of the lobby and hug the edges of the great room. So shy. I am not quite a teen. I see the rotund shape of Mr. Johnson, the square dance caller leans down and put a record on the player. He grabs a microphone and his booming, enticing voice fills the room. The beat, the sway and repetition of the reels on the record joins Mr. Johnson’s soothing welcome.
Soon he is telling us to circle left and ’a la main‘ right and ‘promenade’ and ‘dos-y-dos’ - who says I don’t understand French, I think. The strings of the fiddle on the gramophone soar and I relax and stumble. I am giddy, pre-teen, happy to at least be a part of the spinning, pulsing whirl of dancers. We sing along to the memorable refrains of B-I-N-G-O and then-remember when you got to the ‘O’? - you got hugged by the person you were facing! That is, IF you were lucky enough to get into the circle at the right time. The square dances at the hotel are long gone but the Inn now burns a cozy fire on damp days, its scent a nostalgic comfort as I walk up my hill. Soon I am at the dried driftwood fires of ago when we could feel the other rhythmic element, the bonfire roar, spewing its temporary sting of heat and smoke into our faces. The watch for safety; the smell of saltwater and fog smacking our cheeks, the air moving, daytime or twilight or midnight on Hamilton Beach, Sunset Beach, Rose’s Point, Capp’s Point, Chandler’s, Deer Point… our places. We are hooked. There’s the constant.
Don’t Miss The Red Studio’s Big Tent Sale and First Ever Country Auction on Saturday August 3!
Browse the Big Tent Sale from 10:00 to 11:00, and then grab a seat and bid, bid, bid on all the incredible items in our old-fashioned auction! The auction will include rare Chebeague items, such a graffitied vintage CI schoolhouse desk and a 100+-year-old friendship quilt with island motifs, as well as one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture decorated by our Transformer crew, and a fabulous mix of ephemera, antiques, and mystery box lots! Such fun! The auction starts at 11:00. Come and bid on your family’s Transformer entry! Outbid your neighbor! Bidding wars encouraged! Fisticuffs discouraged. Seating is limited, so please bring your own chairs to the auction.
The Red Studio is still looking for Transformers eager to take an underloved item from our inventory, transform it into a unique work of art, and donate it back to the Red Studio by July 31, so that we can include it in our August 3 auction. You may also donate antiques and your own works of art for inclusion in the auction. All proceeds benefit Island Commons!

CTC OFFICE (207) 846-5227/846-3700 16 North Road, PO Box 27 Chebeague Island, ME 04017 chebeaguetrans@gmail.com chebeaguetrans.com Refreshments for everyone! We hope many of our custom- ers will join us for this exciting event! Independence Launch Date Changed The launch of our new ferry, the Inde- pendence has been changed to July 19th at 1:30 PM. The loca- tion is Washburn & Doughty, 7 Enter- prise Street, East Boothbay. CTC will provide free bus transportation to the event. The bus will meet the noon ferry and return for the 4 PM ferry. The ceremony will include remarks by the builder and CTC. After a blessing, Ar- lene Dyer will chris- ten our new ferry in honor of her late hus- band Wayne. Wayne was a long term CTC Board member and volunteer who con- tributed much to our company.
Summer is here and we would like to remind our passengers of some simple things you can do to help the crew, other passengers, and your- selves on the trip to the island. 1. Arrive early The bus and boat are on a schedule and loading and un- loading freight and passengers during the summer can cause delays when last minute pas- sengers arrive. Our lost and found items grow significantly in the summer. Grocery bags sometimes end up in someone else’s vehicle. The easiest way to make sure you have everything is to label and count your freight . 3. Limit your freight at Route One Space is limited for freight on the buses. If you have furni- ture or other large items, please deliver them to the wharf yourself and then re- turn to Route One to take the bus. 4. Help reduce vehicle conges- tion on the Cousins Island wharf. Use the carts at the Blanchard lot for transporting freight to the wharf. 5. Keep a clear path for pas- sengers at both wharves . If you are going to greet some- one on the wharf, please move out of the way of passengers trying to get on or off the ferry. There are often “traffic jams” on the wharves because the 2. Count and label your freight
path is blocked by other peo- ple. 6. On the ferry, stay with your party throughout the trip. As our regular passengers know, the ticket collection pro- cess can be very time consum- ing during the summer—often resulting in delays in docking. It is important your group stays together until the fares are paid. 7. Keep dogs on leashes and off seats. We have lots of animals riding our ferry so it is very im- portant that they be under total control of their master. In consideration of other pas- sengers, please do not put pets directly on our bus or ferry seats. 8. Keep your children with you changes of falling overboard, falling on the ferry, and crush- ing fingers when landing! Also, do not sit children on the bow of the boat. 9. Don’t bring containers of propane or gasoline on the bus or ferry. Federal regulations prohibit transportation of these fuels. 10. Always follow instructions from the bus and boat crew . Your safety is their Number One priority. Our crew will do their best to inform you of the most practical and safest way to travel on our buses and fer- ry. during the ferry rid e. We want to minimize the

The delivery date of the Inde- pendence has been changed by Washburn & Doughty due to delays in construction of other boats at their yard. The estimat- ed launch date is now 6/21 at 2 PM. The Independence will have to undergo sea trials and required testing for regulatory approval. Therefore, it is uncer- tain at this time when the Inde-
pendence will be home and able to carry passengers. We are planning a launch party at W&D in East Boothbay and are hopeful that many Islanders will be interested in joining us for that event. CTC will provide bus transportation to the launch. As plans are finalized we will post the details.
Where’s the CTC Boat?
We are pleased to announce that CTC boats (Islander, Independence, and Dovekie) will all have Automated Identification Systems (AIS) installed. The Islander’s AIS is operational now—the Dovekie’s will be working May 1st. You can track their location at www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid:442737/zoom:15 or down- loading an App. Suggested Apps will be posted on our Facebook page. Please be advised that there could be a several minute delay in the transmission of the data, so do not rely on the AIS to give you the vessel’s exact location . During the first or second week in May, Bartlett Tree will spray the Route One lot for brown-tail moth. The spraying should be completed before the first bus of the day. The spray may get on vehicles but it will not damage the paint. Customers are urged to park in the center rows of the lower part of the lot to minimize exposure. As soon as we have a definite date, we will post it. However, it would be prudent to park away from trees beginning the end of April. Thank You Letters
At a funeral many years ago someone from away asked how many families were on the island in the winter. The answer was “just one!” How true that still is! I returned from a trip with two suitcases and my wagon with two full Bean bags in it. It could not have been a lower tide. People just appeared and carried all my belongings down to the Cousins Island float and up again when we got to Chebeague.
Summer 2019 Beginning on July 02, 2019
Will be open Tuesdays 9:30am-12 noon & 7:00pm-8:00 pm and Thursdays 9-11 am (new extra hours!)
Thank you to “my family” Kitty Freeman
Come and shop for a new outfit, kitchen item, Craft idea, fun gift, or redecorate while supporting Chebeague non-profits. Thank you!
The family of Dick Calder sends their love and thank you to all our friends and family everywhere. Dick passed away peacefully on May 6th and we all know he is watching over us while he cuts that next tree with his chain saw or runs that 1948N Ford Tractor through another field. He really loved his work and when he had to stop due to failing health he was unhappy but never stopped joking around or telling one of his stories. Dick & I, Leanne, Milt, Tom and Kevin are blessed to have so many people we truly call friends who have been so supportive over the years and continue to help through this difficult time. We think we greeted about 350 people in all between the visiting hours at Lindquist and the funeral service at our beloved church. Each place was filled to overflowing. The flowers were gorgeous and brought back to my home at the Island Commons for all to enjoy. Thank you for remembering Dick with your monetary gifts to the Steven Ross Scholarship Fund and the Island Commons. As many of you know, Dick and I moved to the Commons back in March and immediately felt like our home away from home. The level of care and compassion by the staff exceeds anything our family expected. We believe it’s impossible to name everyone we would like to thank and hopefully will not miss any group! A heartfelt thanks to David and Amanda Campbell for getting Dick’s beloved tractor to the church for the service. To Melissa and Ben Yosua-Davis for helping us plan everything, you truly understood exactly what we wanted to do, which was to celebrate his life. To the Chebeague Fire Department for their many contributions, the sandwiches, flag ceremony and presenting Dick’s lifetime medals. Dick was so proud of his fire department days. To the Cumberland Fire Department for their bouquet of flowers. To the “hundreds” of people who worked endlessly in the kitchen, setting up the wonderful display of food, the major clean-up and to all the cooks who provided so many delicious dishes. To the Chebeague Transportation Company for providing parking & boat transportation for our family and friends. To the Chebeague Island School and Kevin Wentworth for moving people to and from boats with the school bus. To Tiffany Calder and Laura Hamilton for lighting the candles, Boop loved you both so much. To Doug Ross, Lindy Smith, Chris Towle and Mark Dyer for their role as ushers. To the Brenton’s for just everything. To all the folks who stood and told stories and gave speeches which helped keep his service a real celebration. To everyone who has sent cards, called and stopped by to visit. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you all, Dianne and family

Community Matters
The Chebeague Island Recreation Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Auffant as Executive Director. Steve has already started working on all those Rec Center activities that help make summer on Chebeague fun for all ages – and has great ideas for some new ones too! Steve has an extensive background in marketing and business management. He started working in the family business right after high school and continued there after getting his B.S. in Marketing from the University of New Haven in Connecticut. He took what was a family business focusing on printing and promotional materials and grew it into a nationwide, employee owned company, known as American
Solutions, which now includes commercial furniture and window blinds. His experience in marketing and personal management will help strengthen the Rec Center’s management team as they work to continue providing activities for all ages. The Auffant family started coming to Chebeague in 1974. Steve, his parents, and his two sisters rented a house in the East end for many summers. During one of those summers he brought his girlfriend, Christine, to Chebeague and the rest is history. Steve, Christine and their boys, Ryan and Jason continued to come to Chebeague and in 2006 bought a home in the East end. The family moved here year-round in 2016. You have probably seen Jason at the library – he has worked there as a volunteer, and then as an employee, for the last 13 years! Ryan worked summers for Chebeague Sand and Gravel while attending college. And that girl friend Christine, now wife and mother, is our Deputy Town Clerk! Please stop in the Rec Center and say hello to Steve! Check out all the activities that are available this summer and watch for great new things happening under Steve’s creative management. MYSTERY THEATER This year’s Mystery Theater, “Ricker Returns”, will be performed at the Island Hall on Saturday evening, July 13 th , at 7:30 PM. Reserved tickets may be purchased in advance at Kids’ Place (846- 8712). Otherwise, admission is free/donations to benefit Kids’ Place will be welcomed.
Casco Bay Island Alliance Some members of the CBIA (Casco Bay Island Alliance which used to be the Casco Bay Island Development Association) will visit Chebeague on Monday, July 22. The group will be at the Niblic at noon for lunch. Please join us if you are a member of CBIA (or even if you are not a member) to meet some people from other islands in the bay. Questions? Call Marcia Howell 846-3480.
