Safety Patrol Sharon

The summer of 2023 is behind us and everything went great here on Little Sebago Lake, aside from the constant struggle with Mother Nature! She sure does let us know she is in complete control and we can do nothing to correct her behavior. On the other hand, on the days that she gave us sunshine, we were all out on the water as much as possible. The Patrol Boat was scheduled to be out on the lake a total of 752 hours but due to many rainy days and some mechanical issues we only totaled 498 hours, or about two thirds of expected. Our team of Captain Steve Sayian, along with John and Susan Bernier, Katie Martin, Dale Brunell, Dave Cole, Peter Bailey, and Bud Minott were behind the wheel and spent their time patrolling the perimeter, offering assistance and educational materials, whistles, gas, life jackets, and offering a tow if needed. We also handed out ID stickers for non-motorized vehicles that were provided by the State. Yahoo Mail - New safety boat

In mid -June the boat had to be taken out of the water due to some mechanical issues. Cheryl and Bob Bradley, past members and still long time lovers of Little Sebago generously offered to donate their pontoon boat to the Lake Association! Within a matter of days volunteers had it geared up with supplies, signs, and safety rings and we were back in business just in time for the Pirate Parade. THANK YOU so much Cheryl and Bob! You may remember that Nancy and Gordon Mallory had donated their boat to us in 2009 and we eventually decided to use it and developed this program. With generous members like the Bradley’s, and the Mallory’s, and all of your monetary donations we are able to continue this program. And I am so proud to say it is working! For the second year in a row, we have had NO ACCIDENTS. At the annual meeting in July, Sergeant Kyle Hladik spoke about the noticeable difference between our boaters and those on other lakes. He said most seem to have gotten the message and obey most of the navigational and safety laws. The wardens were scheduled to be here 32 days and worked a total of 25, some were missed due to weather or other emergencies that they had to tend to. While here on the lake they checked a total of 1,115 boats, giving citations to 31 and verbal warnings to 67. This translates to under 10% of those they checked. An amazing 90% of you obey the laws of the State of Maine and continue to make our lake one of the safest in the state. THANK YOU from all of us on this Board! The programs budget this year was $32,500 and we spent $25,896, under budget by $6,604 due to the time without a boat and rainy days.
