RECREATION COMMITTEE

Hopefully this is the last year we have to make reference to COVID, but 2022 was BACK TO NORMAL! After a couple of years of either limited or modified activities, the effects of the COVID pandemic finally subsided and the participants of the Mechanic Falls Recreation Department were able to be fully immersed in all sports that they played. Starting with soccer, the Mechanic Falls Soccer Program is now completely combined with Poland Recreation and we

have experienced significant growth within the two communities. Last year was one of our best yet! The combined program means more access to fields and has given our program the ability to participate in a league that includes several neighboring towns and schools as well. The winter season saw basketball

return to near pre-pandemic numbers. This is the only program that is not combined with Poland Recreation. The players and their teams all enjoyed great seasons at each level and saw one of the biggest jumps in new volunteer coaches to the program. Of significant note, the Mechanic Falls 5th & 6th Grade Girls Basketball Team, the RAGING RHINOS, picked up right where they left off last year as runners up. This season they went undefeated to win the 5th & 6th Grade Girls Oxford Hills League Championship!

Last year was the first year of a fully integrated baseball, softball, and tee ball program. It is exciting to share that it was a great success! With the pooled resources, there are now up to 9 fields available across the different levels in the two towns. Last year those fields supported 18 teams from ages 5 17. This year (2023) we have 20 confirmed teams! We are thrilled to share that now 3 of our fields have irrigation on them to better maintain them through the summer.
