Notes From The Council
Please join us in the Hall on Wednesday, January 5th at 11:00 AM when Elizabeth Doughty will be doing a workshop on Fall Prevention. There are lots of things we can do to minimize the risk of falling, from wearing the right shoes to exercises to improve balance. If interested, Elizabeth can do balance screening and is available to do a home safety assessment. She has suggestions that can make your home environment safer. It is especially important to avoid those slip and fall injuries that require a trip to the overcrowded emergency room! The Hall has HEPA filters, masks required, seating will be socially distanced, and you must be fully vaccinated to attend. Soup is back! Well, with a new (and hopefully short term) look….Many people have said they really miss being able to go to Wednesday Soup Lunch. But many people have also said they feel uneasy about getting together and eating lunch
with folks who may be at a higher risk of COVID exposure. The desire for social interaction is real. Over the last year many people have developed small groups or “pods” that share a similar approach to protecting their health. So, Soup Lunch will become Soup for Your Pod. Invite your usual gang to your house and come to the Hall to pick up “Soup Lunch To Go” and have Wednesday Soup Lunch at your house! This is something new so we are still working out the details. We plan to start on Wednesday January 12 th . Our plan right now is that you can come to the Hall and a volunteer will come to your car, take your order, and bring your Soup Lunch for Your Pod to your car. Your Pod can’t come? Then pick up soup for yourself, your family, or an extra for the next day. Again, this is an experiment – an effort to encourage people to get together in a way that allows that much needed social interaction in a safe setting.

Thank you to all who’ve donated to our Annual Appeal and Sustainability Fund this year. You’ve helped us weather the extraordinary costs of operating during Covid-19, AND you brought us to the finish line for Raymond Family Foundation’s very generous challenge match, a big step forward for the Commons and the island community! As 2021 draws to a close, we reflect on all that we have to be thankful for, including: * Our dedicated team of caregivers, who often overcome daunting challenges at home (childcare demands, COVID testing and bad weather), to make it to work every day. * The people of Chebeague who unfailingly engage with our residents, whether it’s a chat while out walking, a wave or an offer of assistance if the need arises.
* The crew of CTC who always offer a helping hand to our residents and caregivers.
* Island shoppers who have made the Red Studio a success with their purchases and their generous donations.
* Island contractors who always respond quickly when something goes wrong at the Commons. Happy New Year!

January 2022
CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY News from CTC! Looking back at 2021 After an extremely difficult year in 2020, CTC had an encourag- ing rebound in 2021. The final numbers are not in yet, but as of the end of the year we have car- ried just over 120,000 passen- gers. That is about 50,000 more passengers than 2020, but still down around 20% from 2019 (pre-COVID) ridership levels. Financially, thanks to the in- crease in operational revenue paired with federal and state grants and a few very generous donors in the community, we find ourselves in healthy finan- cial position. As we (hopefully!) begin to come out of the pandem- ic, this will enable us to continue to provide reliable, safe service while keeping rates as afforda- ble as possible. Some other highlights in 2021: cruises next summer! We continued to provide emer- gency transport off the Island at no cost to the Town or patients. Our crew transports dozens of patients, frequently during hours outside of our normal schedule. We also transport law enforcement to the Island when needed, again at no cost to the Town. Despite the pandemic limiting travel in the first half of the year, our boat crew participated in industry events, including two virtual Passenger Vessel Associ- ation conferences. These confer- ences are vital, allowing us to keep up with new regulations along with best safety practices. Senior Captain Beth Putnam and GM Matt Ridgway also par- ticipated in a mass casualty drill with the Coast Guard at the base in South Portland - the first of hopefully many drills we will be working on with the Coast Guard.

Annual Parking Permits
Business Office: (207) 846-5227/846-3700 16 North Road, PO Box 27 Chebeague Island, ME 04017 chebeaguetrans@gmail.com please thank your crew. They make sure we all get back and forth safely every day! New Employees in 2021 We were fortunate to have some great new employees join us in 2021. We wel- comed the following people to our company in the past year: Bob Bauder - Driver Peter Blake - Lot Attendant J. Holt - Captain Ed Leonard - Deckhand Bill McKenzie -Deckhand Brendan O’Brien - Captain Doug Wallace - Lot at- tendant Retiring Employees In addition to welcoming these new employees, we had a few long time CTC employees retire this year: Paul Chesley – Driver Chuck Graham - Deckhand Ted McKeen - Driver/Lot attendant Linnea Schwarz - Lot at- tendant We wish all our retiring staff the best in their future endeavors! It’s our employees who make this company work. As we start the New Year,
Annual parking per- mits have been issued for applications re- ceived to date. After receiving a record number of applica- tions this year – 191 in total, we were una- ble to issue permits for the Cousins Island lot to all who applied. We can accommodate one car for each year- round island house- hold. Households with two commuters who travel at least 4 times per week were issued second permits. Un- fortunately, that brought us to the ca- pacity of the lot. We wish that we had space to issue permits to all who applied! Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work together as a community to share this parking lot that is so important to all of us.
We had our best barging year ever! Barging revenue was up 26% over 2020, which was also a very strong year. Besides our regular service from Cousins to Chebeague, we also barged from Yankee Marina to Bustins, Low- er Goose and Haskell Islands. This new business is welcome and we will work to expand it. The Independence successfully completed her first charters! We’re excited to have two boats at our disposal again allowing us to offer charter service for wed- dings and other special events. Watch for some scheduled public
None of this would be possible without the continued support of the great community we serve. Thanks for helping us come back strong in 2021 and we wish eve- ryone a happy and healthy 2022! Happy New Year!
