How I Got Here
If you want to know how much rain fell on Chebeague Island so far this month, the person to ask is Bill Danielson. Bill is a retired professor from the University of Hartford. There he taught meteorology, astronomy, and physics. The Danielson’s purchased and renovated the former Orchard Inn on North Road two years ago. Here, Bill collects data on weather year round and shares his statistics on Facebook.
What brought these four people to Chebeague is intriguing and pertinent to many multi-generation families: the Danielson’s and their daughter and son-in-law wanted to live together or near each other. It was a conversation they had been having for years. Would they buy a large parcel of land with one house and build another? Would they build a large house for both families? Where would they choose to live that they could all agree on? A requirement of one of the grandchildren was roads with “no yellow centerlines.” They were not specifically looking to live on an island, but when they found the property on North Road, they agreed that it had the potential to be perfectly suited for two families; ells on either side provided separate living areas, while the center of the house could hold a large common kitchen and family rooms. It works beautifully. Chebeague Island is certainly fortunate to have such an accomplished family join our community and participate and contribute as they do.
Bill’s wife, Esther, is a Landscape Architect as well as a talented weaver. Esther is putting her experience in site design to work by serving on the Chebeague Island Planning Board. The Danielson’s daughter, Pips Veazey, and her husband, Bill McKenzie, moved to Chebeague from Alaska in July of 2020. Bill works for the CTC as a deckhand and for the Chebeague Island Oyster Company. Pips was recently
