From The Town Administrator’s Office

Summer is now if full swing and I hope it is treating you and your family well. I would like to thank everyone who came out and participated in the annual town meeting. It was a little different this year being outside under the tent, but I think the meeting went well. It was nice to see the lively discussion about the various topics, but I was very impressed with respectful tone of the speakers and the general demeanor of everyone in attendance. You should take pride in this; it is not the case everywhere. I would also like to especially thank Vika Wood and Chris Auffant for all of their work to make the town meeting and the election a success, it would not be possible without their efforts. It is anticipated that the paving work will begin on the week of

August 23. The roads included in this year’s road plan include: Division Point Rd, Bar Point Rd, South Rd (from the Inn to East Shore Drive and from Roy Hill Rd to Crossman Dr), North Rd (from School House Rd to Cottage), School House Rd, and John Small Rd. Upcoming Dates: Annual Clean Up Day: Postponed – this will be rescheduled to sometime this fall. Town Office Closure: 8/26 – town staff will be attending a training. Respectfully submitted, Justin L. Poirier, Town Administrator

How I Got Here

If you want to know how much rain fell on Chebeague Island so far this month, the person to ask is Bill Danielson. Bill is a retired professor from the University of Hartford. There he taught meteorology, astronomy, and physics. The Danielson’s purchased and renovated the former Orchard Inn on North Road two years ago. Here, Bill collects data on weather year round and shares his statistics on Facebook.

What brought these four people to Chebeague is intriguing and pertinent to many multi-generation families: the Danielson’s and their daughter and son-in-law wanted to live together or near each other. It was a conversation they had been having for years. Would they buy a large parcel of land with one house and build another? Would they build a large house for both families? Where would they choose to live that they could all agree on? A requirement of one of the grandchildren was roads with “no yellow centerlines.” They were not specifically looking to live on an island, but when they found the property on North Road, they agreed that it had the potential to be perfectly suited for two families; ells on either side provided separate living areas, while the center of the house could hold a large common kitchen and family rooms. It works beautifully. Chebeague Island is certainly fortunate to have such an accomplished family join our community and participate and contribute as they do.

Bill’s wife, Esther, is a Landscape Architect as well as a talented weaver. Esther is putting her experience in site design to work by serving on the Chebeague Island Planning Board. The Danielson’s daughter, Pips Veazey, and her husband, Bill McKenzie, moved to Chebeague from Alaska in July of 2020. Bill works for the CTC as a deckhand and for the Chebeague Island Oyster Company. Pips was recently

hired as the inaugural director of the University of Maine Portland Gateway program to identify and foster partnerships to connect businesses and community interests with University of Maine research.

Sunday, August 15 th at the Chebeague Island Library and via Zoom Remake the World , Astra Taylor

From PublishersWeekly: Filmmaker Astra Taylor ( Democracy May Not Exist, but We’ll Miss It When It’s Gone ) tackles a wide range of pressing social issues in these ambitious and thought-provoking essays. “Breathing Together” ties the respiratory distress of Covid-19 to Eric Garner’s death in police custody, conspiracy allegations against striking workers in the mid-19th century, and the conspiratorial thinking behind the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. … Taylor also

tackles patriarchal attitudes in the tech industry, how capitalism preys on insecurity, and the crushing burden of student debt. Blending big-picture thinking with the history of the populist struggle in America, this impressive collection makes a strong case that the time for change is now.

Many thanks to our wonderful system of rescue/transport and the professional self-sacrificing individuals that make it work. I wish to particularly thank Ralph, Josh, Miranda, Chris, Beth and those at the ready in the early morning of June 22nd. I wish I could name you all but the confusion of that morning prevents me from doing so. I was also very fortunate to have Beth and Bill assist me on my journey home. They were incredibly compassionate on what was a very busy boat. Thanks also to Nancy for making it easy to get equipment from the Commons Loan closet. I have a ways to go but thanks to all of you, I am determined to make a strong comeback. With the utmost sincere thanks, Alison Paradis

In Memory of Scott McCollom - Sunday, August 15 th There will be an informal gathering on Hamilton Beach from 1:30 to 2:00 for a Celebration of Life before the family leaves to return his ashes to the sea.
