Notes From The Hall
The Chebeague Island Hall Community Center is home to many things that define community on the island: Although our doors have largely been closed for the past year owing to the pandemic, we are eager to reopen and once again serve as the heart of our community. We feed you at the Wednesday soup lunches and community lunches, spaghetti dinner fundraisers for the Ross Scholarship, and the much-loved Italian Night Supper. We entertain you with the annual children’s theater production, original plays, concerts, lecture series, dances, and Halloween and holiday parties for the kids. We promote the arts with island school concerts and art exhibits, craft fairs, the Martha Hamilton Craft Swap Extravaganza, and the Ladies Aid Fair.
We inform you by hosting town government gatherings such as the annual Town Meeting, voting, selectmen’s meetings, and various committee meetings, as well as annual meetings of various island nonprofits. We shelter you in times of power outages as part of our Rec Cross Emergency Shelter duties. We keep you and your pets healthy as the site of the Council’s annual flu clinic, dental clinic, and other “wellness” events, as well as the monthly Yarmouth Veterinary clinic. We comfort you with warm hugs, mountains of food, and a place to gather after the loss of a loved one. We help you celebrate life-changing events such as marriages, births, and birthdays. We can’t wait to see you all again.

New book: Reading the Bible from the Margins by Miguel De La Torret This introduction to “liberation theology” focuses on how issues involving race, class, and gender influence our understanding of the Bible. Describing how “standard” readings of the Bible are not always acceptable to people or groups on the “margins,” this book offers valuable new insights into biblical texts today.

Even with the horror of a global pandemic, the Library still managed act like a Library. It took a bit getting used to not being able to come in and graze, but we still had plenty of new books. You might have learned how to use our on line catalogue. You got used to coming to the outside bin and looking for a bag or envelope for your materials. We might have delivered materials right to you! You might have sent things through the slot to be faxed or copied. We did those things. Our magazines still came, you might have asked we set aside some for you to pick up or picked through the pile at the Food Pantry. You might have needed a book that we didn’t have, and after a bit, Inter Library Loan services resumed and we were able to get it for
you. The Island Directory was published and sold. Our wireless internet cranked along each and every day; some of you set up portable offices with your lawn chairs out back. Even though we packed away our dinosaurs, trains and puzzles, we were still able to check them out. Little packets of craft supplies also found their way to houses. We still sold copier paper and envelopes. We made recommendations and suggestions for living with COVID (hello Otto’s!). The only thing we didn’t do too much of was lend out movies (hello Netflix and Disney +), but not to worry, they are still here! You will be able to check everything out again. In the meantime, what do you want to read, or what can we do for you?
COVID CURBSIDE/DELIVERY HOURS Wednesday, Friday & Saturday 10:00 am to 1:00 pm Call or email to let us know what you would like.

The Chebeague Island Library Board of Trustees would like to thank Deb Bowman for her more than 20 years of dedicated service to the Chebeague Library and the Chebeague community; Deb is retiring as Library Director June 1st. She will be missed. We also want to let everyone know that we will be posting for the Library Director position very soon. We encourage island residents to apply.

Town of Chebeague Island 192 North Road Chebeague Island, ME 04017 www.townofchebeagueisland.org
Chebeague Island Cemetery Reclaiming Graves and Plots* The Town of Chebeague Island has requested that plot# 79 last burial date 1864 whose owner of record was Ida Bosworth be reclaimed by the town in order to be added to the inventory of available cemetery plots. Should you feel that you have a lineal or collateral claim to the cemetery plot in question, please provide in writing, legal proof of lineal or collateral descent to the Superintendent of the Chebeague Island Cemetery, 192 North Road, Chebeague Island, ME 04017 on or before the 15th of April 2021. If on receipt of the documentation and approval of the Superintendent and payment of perpetual care at current rates, a deed will be issued. If no claimant comes forward, this lot will be added to the cemetery inventory. The Town may reclaim plots or graves that have been abandoned for interment for 75 consecutive years or more. This involves a “substantial search” by advertising for existing heirs or devisees. If no owner can be found, then the cemetery may use up to one-half of the unoccupied lots [Title 13 MRSA subchapter VI, sec. 1381]. 3 Administration 2 e 2. If more than one person claims the lot through either lineal or collateral descent, all parties must prove their connection to the original owner of the lot by providing documentation. 3. Claimants must reach an amicable decision regarding use of the lot and file a written and signed agreement with the Town Clerk before a burial permit will be issued. 4. Should the parties not reach an agreement, the Town will not arbitrate, and the parties may pursue their claim through legal means. 3 Though the Statute refers to “perpetual care and maintenance”, this is not the issue here; it is abandonment. Chebeague has always provided care and maintenance, whether the owner of the plot has paid for perpetual care or not. *Town of Chebeague Island Cemetery Rules and Regulations Administration 7 g.
