Community Matters - Chandler Preserve

Have you noticed the Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust markers recently placed on trees along South Road going towards Chandler’s Beach? This is the Chandler Preserve, a 9.6 acre property donated by Toby and StacieWebb in December or 2019 to CCLT. This parcel contains wildlife, forest, a stream, and wetlands. Between 1842-1896, a portion of the land was home to the West End School. When the school fell into disrepair, a new West End School was built across the road at the corner of School House and South Road. School children would play during recess on the Chandler Preserve parcel. Binky Boxer’s mother told stories of playing there at the “jumping off place,” as some called it. Children also called the woods “Old Dixie” according to Donna Damon. For now, The Chebeague and Cumberland Land trust plans to continue the parcel’s present- day use as a protected habitat for plant and animal species, water quality and watershed protection, carbon sequestration, and for the mitigation of climate change, as well as for year-round public access for recreation. Thank you, Toby and Stacie Webb, for this generous donation!
