Here you have many options for day rides. Head north to Mt. Chase, Mattagamon, Bowlin then across towards Baxter Park com- ing down in to Millinocket with a stop at the Northern Timber Cruis- ers Club. Maybe when you are there the snowmobile museum will be open and you can check out the antique sleds. Continue your ride east, back to where you parked to complete your day. If you want to trailer further and go to the Timber Cruisers you have many options from here as well. Head south over towards Upper Jo- Mary, cross the multi- use trail suspension bridge off Route 11, down to Brownville and back. You can trailer even fur- ther go through Millinocket to the Millinocket Lake area to start your

and is largest of the five regions both geographically and with number of clubs. It covers the counties of Washington, Han- cock, Penobscot and Piscataquis. Each county has its own unique riding experiences ranging from mountains, wide-open spaces, wooded club trails, or ocean views. Let’s start with an area most everyone is familiar with, shall we? Travel up Interstate 95 and get off inMedway. You can use the park and Ride beside the exit or go up the road a way and into the clubhouse parking lot of the East

Pittston Farms, and Ragged Lake. On any of these rides you will see beautiful scenery with Mt. Katah- din as your backdrop. Want a less traveled but equally scenic ride? Stop in Lincoln and ride out of there east to Mat- tawamkeag, Springfield and Lee or go west to Milo and Dover. You can also reach these areas from the Park and Ride in Medway. Another well known area in the Eastern Region is the Green- ville area. You can start in Dover, ride through Guilford, Abbott, and Monson or go towards Sebec. Ride around Moosehead Lake,

h e a d towards Kodadjo, or head towards Rockwood. You can also get to Pittston Farms from here.

So what about less popular but equally scenic rides in this region? Why not start in Newport and head towards Dover, Exeter, Corinth, Charleston, Atkinson Milo or Dexter? You can head up to Hampden and Hermon then on to Bangor and up to Kenduskeag, Hudson, Levant or Glenburn. Much of this ride will be on local club trails and take you through wooded areas with many chances to see wildlife. Let’s cross the Penobscot River! Trailer to Holden and park at EMSC. Ride northeast to Clifton, Milford, and out towards Nicatous Lake and Beddington. You can also take a ride south to Orrington, Bucksport and Dedham. Ride up Bald Mtn in Dedham which over-

looks Phillips Lake. Again, most of these trails are local, wooded club trails, but you will find great views from any of them. Not ready to stop yet? Here’s another area to explore. Go to Elllsworth and start at Washington Junction which is the beginning of the Downeast Sunrise Trail. This trail will take you along the coast toward the Canadian bor- der through Franklin, Cherryfield and in to East Machias. Here you cross the causeway and will begin to see tidal water on one side and wooded areas on the other side. Continue on to Dennysville and stop for a break at their clubhouse which is open 24/7. Keep going until to reach Pembroke, which is the end of the line for the ITS sys- (Continued on Page 3)

Take a Ride in the Eastern Region!!

(Continued from Cover) tem. You can use local club trails to access other areas of Downeast Maine. Why not start on Route 9 in Beddington? Go northeast to Grand Lake Stream, Princeton and Calais. You can also get to Sunrise Trail from here by going south to Cherryfield. One other area of the Eastern Region that is a nice, but shorter ride is Acadia National Park. If the snow conditions are right, you can ride the Park Loop Rd and ride your snowmobile to the top of Cadillac Mtn. This trip depends greatly on the weather as many times it will snow during the day or night and the wind will blow it all away the next day. As you can see, the Eastern Region has many, many differ- ent day rides and areas you can explore. If you are really, really adventurous and want to make

a vacation week out of it, start in Newport, go north to Greenville or Millinocket, head east from Millinocket to Medway, over to Mattawamkeag or Springfield, down to Lincoln or Grand Lake Stream, then Downeast and west to Holden. You would need some- one to bring your trailer to Holden as there is no way to cross the Penobscot River, or you could just go back up to Lincoln, cross the river and back down to Newport. Of course, all of these trips depend on snow conditions which do vary a great deal in the Eastern Region, but what better way to see a large portion of this state than by snowmobile! With 74 clubs in the region you can find many, many club trails off ANY of the ITS or Connector trails that will take you to places in Maine you may never have seen before!

From the President

corner and the unofficial start to our favorite season. A little snow in the forecast for the upcoming weekend will make it feel that much closer. Our Virtual SnoCross Race is up and running. It will be interesting to see who our first winner will be. What a great opportunity for clubs to raise money and have fun at the same time. Good luck to all the racers. A lot of clubs have been posting pictures of trailwork, brushing and bridge work. Strong work all over the state. Facebook sure is a great tool for clubs to get info to their club members and show all their hard work. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered for a club to make sure the Maine snowmobile trails will be awesome this season. Groomers will be hitting the trails soon and another dedicated group of volunteers will be spending their nights making sure the trails are smooth and hard for riders from all over Maine and beyond. It’s a great team of volunteers that make snowmobiling in Maine the best in the northeast. Maine has a great Let’s have a safe year please use caution, ride right ride smart. The trails this year will be hit hard with riders from all over the Northeast, many folks have shown interest in coming to Maine. Most for the first time. We have a great trail system, signage is getting better the club’s small and large have been out widening trails and building new bridges. Lets welcome the new riders with our Maine hospitality and remind them to be safe on the snow. I’d like to start a project with a rental company to install Ride Lites on a fleet of their sleds. I’ve contacted Ride Lite for information on discount pricing. After, I’ll hopefully find a company that would like to try the experiment. Many past accidents have been with inexperienced riders on rental sleds. I’m not picking on anybody but would like to have those rental riders be safe. I’ve worked in the past few years with IF&W’s Mike Sawyer and Craig Gerry and Mike Foster on state snowmobile safety. Thanks to these gentleman, on the State side we work close with them to get more organizations involved. Mike Sawyer is the head of the Department, for the last few years I’ve worked with him on the safety poster program. We just ordered 700 to be printed. Craig Gerry and Mike Foster are qualified Maine safety instructors, I’ve been to a few safety classes with them and am very thankful for their leadership and wisdom. Please as the new season begins take it easy go slow and enjoy! Thanks for riding our trails!, AL

reputation in the industry and it’s because of all of you. The MSA family grew one bigger at the beginning of December. Melissa has joined us as office manager and is settling in nicely. Al Swett, has been working with her as well as other steering committee members to get her up to speed on the day to day operations of the MSA office. As for the office, memberships have been coming in steady. Calls from out of state riders asking about areas to visit and stay while they are here on vacation. Al Swett has been working his tail off at the office and I’m sure he’s grateful for Melissa’s help. Now he can get a day off which I know he’s ready for. The trails will be here soon AL! 2020 has not been a great year, although, I’m sure we won’t soon forget it. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and 2021 brings us a great snowmobile season and start of our year. Put those snow dance shoes on and do your best snow dance. It’s snow time. Until next month, Think Snow, Mike

W elcome to December! Hopefully you’re all doing well and the virus will soon be the poison of the past. We still need to be cautious and prepared. So some folks have been lucky enough to have ridden already with a little of the white stuff in their back yards. Remember when you head out for the first time. Go slow, ease into the throttle. Most folks have not been on a sled since last season and you need to remember the fundamentals and controls of your snowmobile. And you rider’s that have had 2 strokes for ever and your new sled is a 4 stroke be ready for a change! These new sleds have a power range not like the 2 strokes. They like to get down and the have lots of low-end power. Get ready for low noise and a smokeless ride. The new 2 strokes are quiet and get up and go too. The new suspensions on all the brands are so smooth and most are easy to steer and ride so good. Alan Swett, 207-872-7282 234 County Rd, Waterville ME 04901 snowtraveler@roadrunner.com

Clubs and riders to “get ready” in order to have a successful snowmobil- ing experience. With this being said we as local clubs have an important deadline coming right up and that is getting your grooming grant applica- tion in before December 31st, in order to apply for monetary reimbursement for grooming and trail maintenance, this is made though the Dept. of A.C.F The Snowmobile Division. By now, all clubs should have submitted their other time sensitive forms like, the officer update forms (both the MSA and Dept. of A.C.F. require these forms) as well as your trail sign orders and non-profit status docs. Right now, it’s kind of like the Heinz ketchup commercial, we’re all just waiting in anticipation for enough snow to ride and groom. Usually when this happens, it happens quickly and we instantly shift our efforts from fall maintenance and everything that it brings to full on snow grooming, and

with it immediately finding details that we just plain missed. Whether it be landowner or maybe signage issues or maybe a change made that looked good on paper but when the tracks hit the snow, it just isn’t going to work. So back to my first question, yes I think it’s going to stay and we will have a little more to go with it by the time you read this… now if THIS sce- nario does not play out you are free to say “Well Chinnock was wrong again” Lol. In any case, I am getting very excited knocking on old man Winter’s door again and you should be too, after all it is time for us to reap the fruits of our labor. Thank you all once again for read- ing and we will see you next month, and as always please share anything of snowmobile value with me or if you have a question or concern please email, message or call me, I would love to hear from you! Respectively, Mark.

Mark Chinnock,Trails Committee Chair 207-754-9874 435 Poland Corner Rd, Poland ME 04274 napadude66@hotmail.com H ello Folks, So the big question of the day for me as I am writing this piece and relaxing after a long day of clean up from our first Nor’easter of the season is, by the time this paper gets to you folks will this snow still be here? Will it be gone? Or will we have gotten more on top of this first dump- ing? I think that this is what part of the attraction to the sport is. No mat- ter what has happened or not happens weather wise, we are always hopeful and convinced that it is going to snow moving forward! In the months leading up to the “Winter Snow” anyone involved in snowmobiling knows that we must work towards and plan on a snow filled and busy season. There are many moving pieces for the MSA,

master of the Year” Traci Hartmann and I got to admit that I was a bit concerned that on Dec 3rd, she and their club pro- motional lady, Kathie Lee were tooling around with an incredible video from a Pontoon Boat! Ladies, it’s December! Generally, we do brush work this time of year… I guess it may be me that may have egg on my face as in the very same week, this little club (of the year, mind you) got a bridge that literally dis- appeared this very week is now back in place and ready for service. This is just another shining example of how relent- less Maine Snowmobile Clubs are and how serious we take our responsibili- ties. It’s also just another example of how 2020 has changed the footprint as doing trail inspections from a pontoon boat has got to be a new benchmark! Congrats to you! At the November meeting, MSA Directors voted just a tick short of unanimously of supporting a funding increase to help fund our sport. There is since early September answering your emails and phone calls. It’s great to meet you all from Judy in St. Francis the far North, to Steve in far West and all of you in between its been quite an experience. People don’t realize what it takes to operate like we do. I’m very proud of all you. Your passion is above and beyond anything I could have imagined. Yes, we have sometimes been off trail with disagreements but at the end of the day, small club or the largest we have this is common, ”if it’s broke, we can fix it!” and that’s why we’re successful! A friend of mine told me that a long time ago where we worked together. And it’s a good attitude to go by. This month some lucky people are going to have a great Christmas, maybe winning some awesome MSA Raffle prizes! The tickets have sold well despite the upside down year. ITS maps are in, they will be available by mail, only two dollars to cover postage. Or, we’ll be distributing them to the area regions. Calendars are still for sale as well. March 5, 6 and 7th is the free weekend for our bordering states to come check out the best trails in the Northeast by the best volunteers! I’d like to thank every landowner in the state for all they do! Without you folks large and small we would not have a trail system. Ride Right Ride Smart! Please be safe out there and call me if you need anything. Thanks, AL

A t 7:00 PM President Mike Grass Jr. called the meeting to order. Pledge of Allegiance Mike welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanked everyone for attending. Pretty good turnout. Motion was made by Mark Chinook and seconded, to accept the secretary’s report as distributed, motion carried. Treasurer’s Report was read by Mike Grass Jr.. Copy to be filed at the office. Mike stated there is a lot going on behind the scenes. Office help is still all volunteer. Executive V.P. Al Swett- Raffle tickets are selling well. A lot of calls coming into the office from New York asking about accommodations, and restaurants. Anticipating a lot of snowmobiling this season. Lori and Bob are doing an outstanding job holding things together. Eastern Region V.P. Eileen Lafland -Expanded on many thanks to Lori and Bob spending 6-8,10-12 hours on Saturdays, taking care of everything that Al has piled up for them for the week. Hope everyone is enjoying the paper. They have made some great changes. Eastern region a lot of clubs are challenged by the Covid, doing what they can. Central Region V.P. Jack Lord- ITS trails in Central Region are all connected. Asked that the stop signs be marked with the name of the road and if no doubt, grooming, materials, dimin- ishing lack of volunteers, increased insurance rates and a general cost of living are pushing the limits of keeping pace. MSA asked for your clubs input and those that responded were almost all in agreement that, “It’s that time”. While we take no prisoners of agree- ment that the State of Maine is the one that walks away with the easy buck, it is us that truly enjoy playing the game. Many feel that, it’s time for Maine to contribute and while most agree, timing may not be the best to play that card. They obviously currently have a strug- gle of their own to negotiate. While the MSA is going forward at drafting a bill for the December 18th deadline, HERE IS WHAT WE NEED YOU CLUBS TO DO! Please send the MSA a note stating that your club would support an increase. While the deadline of support for MSA’s vote has come and gone, the bill will not be heard for probably a couple months.

you can put the GPS locations the signs. The Central Region showcase ride will be January 22 and 23 at Sky Lodge with a noon time cookout with the whole thing depending on Covid. Western Region V.P. James Boyce- Got to have a plan. Never seen so many people out working the trails on Saturdays in November. Keep doing what you are doing, but stay safe, please WEAR orange. See so much enthusiasm - things are getting good. Coastal Region V.P. Dave Watson- Every club in the Coastal Region is doing what they need to do- bridges, brushing, and new reroute. It’s incredible. Thank you to everybody across the state. Standing Committee Reports Trails Committee Chair Mark Chinnock- Eastern, Northern and Central Region have had Trail Signage Workshops, left are Coastal and Western Region. ITS maps have a fresh new look. More information on the cover as well as more information for the rider. Review your rescue-boggin plan with the first responders, know where and how it is going to work. Safety Committee Al Swett -Reviewed rescue- boggin and Life Flight coordination with 100’ x 100’ landing zones. Expanded on common sense safety precautions working on groomers good jacks and blocking. We are going to have more safety checks out Having your clubs name on the support list would really carry some weight. Here are a few facts. 1) The last fee increase was 5 years ago and both municipal and club grants have been increased with the funds. 2) MSA was asked by the legislature when we would be back for a review of our rates. (that would be now) 3) Maine’s rates are considered to be the lowest in the entire Northeast offer- ing arguably the most trail of the same area. 4) Maine’s lack of speed limits and lack of mandatory insurance appear to be a significant factor at bringing in other area riders. 5) The Capital Equipment Grant has not been increased since its inception in 1998. 6) As voted by the directors, as a resi- dent, five dollars will go directly to that fund to support the purchase of new equipment. Five dollars will go directly to the trail fund again to increase grant

funds for clubs. 7) Non-Residents rate would be iden- tical as above, but with a ten/ten split. Many clubs that responded added incredible suggestions that should be further vetted. Many also felt this pro- posal was still not enough and should have been rolled into some sort of man- datory membership/incentive/ require- ment. Given the current times and the lack of a full time lobbyist this was considered too much to tackle this sea- son. One thing did surface. MSA could not be more proud of their participating clubs for the feedback. Our leverage of being a strong organization with a “One Mission, One Goal, and One Team becomes very evident when clubs par- ticipate. Please encourage all clubs to support this movement and MSA! Thanks to all that supplied input and Bring on the Season! Happy Holidays! John Monk Steering Committee Chairman there, no question we are going to have more traffic out there. Stay Safe!! Steering Committee Chair John Monk Spoke of the increase in registration. A motion was made “to increase residents snowmobile registration by $10 with $5 going to snowmobile trail fund and $5 going to capital equipment grant and non-residents snowmobile registration $20. with $10 going to snowmobile trail fund and $10 going to capital equipment grant” by Gerry Major and seconded by Larry Lafland, motion carried. Mike -Stated the Super Raffle tickets are moving along pretty good. Eileen -Added the Central Region showcase ride is February 20th out of the Millinocket Area on the Jo-Mary Trail. Mark – Joe Higgins warned that Clubs should be very cautious with their spending. Debbie Gould from Outdoor Women enthusiastically spoke of the details of the Virtual SNOCROSS virtual online fundraising event. 75% going to the club and 25% to MSA. More details to follow through MSA. Mike- MSA masks are available for $8. each. Get your MSA maps! 50/50 Raffle winner is Larry Lafland. Which was donated back to the MSA. Pot of gold drawn – The Squash Hollow Sno-Goers. They were not present. Respectfully Submitted, Brad Barker

C oming to the end of 2020! Wow what a year, hopefully things get back to normal or close to it soon. The regions have gone above and beyond this preseason getting things ready for a spectacular riding year of 2021. The people in the clubs are incredible! Working lately in some, wet conditions building bridges widening or having to make new reroutes because of landowners wanting to change the location of a trail. Every one of you have a passion for snowmobiling that goes above and beyond expectations. Thank You! The area VP’S are a great group, they have a plan and get it done. Northern Region VP

Western Region VP Make sure to get your trails signed to make them safe and never leave it up to the rider. Signs are finally in as I’m writing this article. I always say you can never have too many signs. Remember to register your sleds and get as many members as you can to join your club. Until next month enjoy the ride and stay safe. -Jim

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner. It’s time to get the season started. It makes me really happy to see the enthusiasm clubs have this year brushing and repairing bridges and a couple reroutes. Hopefully things get back to normal and we can ride and forget this year ever happen. Most clubs are in a holding pattern until we can have gatherings again. If you’re like me I can’t wait to climb into the groomer and forget about everything but making perfect trails for all to enjoy.

There is good & bad with that. It sure is nice to put up signs, cut blowdowns & walk potential re-routes without snowshoes or snowmobiles & maybe the ground will freeze up a bit to make a long-lasting base. Regardless of the weather, clubs have been very busy with trail work underway almost every weekend. All this trail work can be very expensive, and clubs may have a different set of guidelines to follow this winter for fundraising. Please reach out where you ride your membership dollars will count even more this winter. By the time you get this paper, the super raffle will be right around the corner and we will get to see who has won. Hope you all had a great time selling the tickets and met some new folks along the way. If you have a question, problem, concern, or idea on snowmobiling in “The County”, get in touch with me. Central Region VP H ere I sit looking out the window with snowflakes in the air and 27 degrees on November 18th. It is coming “WINTER FUN”. The pre-snow trail work is mostly done in the central region. As I travel around, fields are staked. Not a lot of signs yet as hunting season is not over. Central Region is hosting a showcase weekend in January, Friday the 22nd (come in), Saturday the 23rd (ride) and Sunday the 24th (head home). Located at Sky Lodge in Moose River, just north of Jackman. This is contingent of course on Covid-19 and what we are allowed to do. Check in with us around New Years and make sure that everything is still a go; we hope to see you there. three months, I have been able to see firsthand the work you are doing and the new members as well as returning mem- bers you have submitted. I have said it before and will continue to say it, I am extremely proud of ALL the clubs in this region. You go out of your way to reach people and educated riders on what your area has to offer. Keep up the GREAT work and give your self a pat on the back as you all deserve it. Hopefully by the time everyone reads this there will be a new office manager for MSA. In mid-November the steering committee was interviewing people and had some very qualified people apply. If that has happened by now, when you call the office welcome whoever answers the phone. If Al Swett is still there answer- ing the phone, give him a BIG THANK YOU for manning the office during our busiest time, September through now. Enjoy your holidays everyone! Stay healthy and stay safe! 2021 is just around the corner! Eileen

PO Box 621, Ashland ME 04732 Stedman.matt@jdirving.com H ello fellow snowmobilers, Well, the end of this November sure looks different than the last two… just a bit of snow along the Crown of Maine. The last 2 years we have been knee deep in snow for 2 weeks already.

W ell, December is here and the virus is still causing many changes in everyone’s lives. Another holiday has passed and with more holidays this month, who knows what they will look like. To all the MSA members who have experienced this illness first hand, I hope you are in better health now and ready for the snow to come and riding to begin. MSA did hold its November directors meeting in Guilford with all CDC guide- lines in place and socially distancing. We even had people via video conferencing. Thanks to the Four Winds club mem- bers who helped set this up and make it happen. The new MSA facemasks were rolled out at this meeting as well. If you would like to purchase one or more, check out the MSA on line store. While you are there take a look at all the other merchandise you can order. The nice thing about it is, you can have it shipped directly where you want it to go. By the time this is read the MSA Super raffle drawing will be almost, if not already over. Tickets have been going out of the office and coming back at a good pace. Without all the fairs, festi- vals, club suppers and other usual fund-

raisers, sales are down from past years but many clubs are finding new ways to make the best of it. One thing that isn’t stopping or slow- ing down at this time is trail work. Club trail masters across the state have been organizing workdays, doing re-routes and brushing trails, to get them ready for cold weather and snow. If you happen to see one or more than one of these dedi- cated men and women out there clearing a trail, stop and offer to help or at least thank them! Remember without all the work they do in the fall and early winter; you wouldn’t have the quality ride you do when the snow finally gets here. At this time, we are planning to have an Eastern Region Showcase Ride like we did last year. It is tentatively set for Feb. 20, 202. There will be more details on this as it gets closer, so keep looking for them. That will also be the day of the MSA directors meeting which will allow people to come ride in the morning and afternoon then attend the directors meet- ing that night. A shout out to all the Eastern Region clubs for your hard work in getting mem- berships in to the office. For the past

Press Release Contact: Ed Klim Phone: (517) 339-7788 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE US Department of Commerce Releases Economic Output Data for Outdoor Recreation

HASLETT, MI, Novem- ber 20, 2020: The US DepartmentofCommerce, Bureau of Economic Anal- ysis has released the Economic Output for out- door recreation for this past year. The Recreation Industry generated $788 Billion Dollars in 2019, which is $ 10 Billion Dol- lars higher than in 2018. The outdoor recreation economy continues to grow and outperform the economic growth in the United States during the pandemic. Individuals are continuing to reach out and recreate in the great outdoors across the United States. The latest report shows that Outdoor Rec-

reation, as part of the Gross Domestic Product, is 2.1%. What does that mean you ask? Outdoor Recreation produces more of the GDP and is bigger than mining and agriculture! Snow Activ- ities, including snowmo- biling, grew 3.1%. Most of that activity is within rural America and is the eco- nomic engine for many rural families and their economy. Outdoor Recreation generates 5.2 million jobs in the United States. The states with the largest percentage of state GDP related to outdoor rec- reation are Hawaii, Ver- mont, Montana, Florida, Maine, and Wyoming. In

Montana, 32,000 jobs are generated by the Out- door Recreation Econ- omy which is 4.7% of the state’s GDP. Boating and Fishing is the largest conventional activity for the Recre- ation Economy generat- ing $23.6 Billion Dollars of economic activity while RVing is the second larg- est activity nationally gen- erating $18.6 Billion Dol- lars of economic activity. Snow Activities was rated the 6th largest of the eco- nomic activities. Snowmobiling is an important part of the overall recreation econ- omy and we generate economic activity during peak winter months when

much of rural America is in need of economic out- put and support. The recent study underscores that indi- viduals that are outdoor enthusiasts are active in the winter and warmer weather as well. Sur- veys by ISMA show that approximately 60% of all snowmobilers also ride ATVs and UTVs in the summer. More than 50% of snowmobilers enjoy boating and fishing and recreational camping. Outdoor recreation enthu- siasts participate in many activities and they are healthy, strong, and do not participate in a great deal of TV watching and internet-based recreation.

The snowmobile man- ufacturers and the snow- mobile community are pleased to participate with the studies con- ducted by the Bureau of Economic Analysis within the Department of Com- merce. We provide sup- porting data and infor- mation to the department upon request. We high- light the high activity level of the recreational snow- mobiling customer base and highlight to elected representatives how we are active supporters of recreation on public land and great, responsible, family activity.
