The Wellness Center with a MaineHealth Nurse Is Open for

Notes From The Hall

The monthly vet clinic at the Hall is on hiatus until next year , so there will be no clinic on the first Thursday of the month until the Yarmouth Veterinary Practice is ready to resume this valuable service. In other news, the heat pumps have been installed at the Hall and work well. Many thanks to the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation for underwriting nearly half the cost of this project, and thanks to Phil, Tad, and Mary for shepherding this job to completion! Denise and Tad are putting the finishing touches on the Community Center sign in front of the building. Carrot Signs provided new text for the sign, so all that was needed was a coat of paint on the signboard itself. Tocompletetheexterior renovationof theCommunity Center, the final phase of the landscaping around the building will begin in September with the help of Erin Whetham and Nathan Doughty. We can’t wait to be done!

Blood Draws, Blood Pressure Checks, PT/INR Testing, Medication Setup, Dressing Changes, Suture Removal, Wellness Checks, and Health Information. No appointment needed.

Direct Primary Care is a way to maintain access to all the essential elements of your health care. I am honored to have the opportunity to serve residents and guests of Chebeague Island and am happy to meet with you at the Wellness Center or in your homes. Working together to build on a foundation of listening, trust, and understanding, we can manage nearly 100% of your acute and chronic care needs together. What’s more, a membership in a Direct Primary Care practice gains you access to medications and refills at wholesale prices, as well as deep discounts on lab and radiology services.

What a relief to know that your doctor is but a phone call or text message away, ready and eager to support your physical and mental health, on your time and when it is convenient for you. Please stop by

to say hello Friday mornings in front of the Wellness Center. A one-time visit can be arranged for $50 for non-members.

Dr. Larson will be at the Wellness Center every Friday morning 9-11:30AM. No appointment needed. Please see her website for the full range of services she can provide. www.heidilarsonmd.com She will see folks who are not in her practice for a fee of $50.00. She does not bill insurance.

Marty’s Memories - An Island Tour by Marty Trower

This season, during the pandemic, I didn’t allow guests to stay in my bedroom suite upstairs. Actually, I haven’t allowed anyone in the house since February. It has been a scrambled messy place a lot of the time. Sometimes it’s a lot tidier and ordered but nobody sees it or cares either way. The clutter, I have come to realize, is not useful or interesting to anyone but me and I am tired of having it in the way. I am believing, finally, that all of this, the gathering up of memories, the laying out of them for scrutiny and resolution is a slowly meandering process that I have been, so far, too impatient to deal with it. In the midst of these revelations came our wedding day. It turned out to be one of those ‘typical Chebeague days’ that we all know and relish and feel forever. The air was warm, the breeze gentle, the islands bounced in the bay. Meaningful words and music permeated the small gathering overlooking Hamilton Beach. I floated above it all, it seems now, as I remember only fragments of sentences until feeling the strength of my husband’s hand in mine, anchoring us to our future. I do remember saying how I wished our parents could have been there. Later in the week, while driving the length and breadth of the island alone, I found myself imagining my parents coming back to Chebeague now, sitting in the car with me as I gave them an island tour, catching them up on the last thirty years they have missed. Our East End neighborhood would look and feel the same; many of the houses still owned and occupied by descendants of the same families; the hotel, painted yellow again, up and running (although not this summer); the golf course groomed and active

and the Stone Pier busy with cars parking and people lugging gear on and off the island. The tennis courts would be quietly alive with the steady ‘thock’ of velvety balls and random calls and grunts from players. My parents’ house on the North road would appear, spruced up and expanded, the land around it cleared further and abundant with vegetables and flowers; their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren might be gathering and enjoying meals and stories together there around the table. My mother would see the library she helped plan and have built and the community center and improved kitchen buzzing with purpose. They’d find the Island Market bigger and offering chowders and sandwiches, and coffee and pastries; and the grange (they were members) has turned into a fun thrift shop! The recreation center, the pool, the tennis court, the day care center and the huge, new elementary school would be a total shock to my parents. So would the location of the post office at the boatyard and the Niblic store.

My mother would be delighted with all the new places. My father would not like change and would worry about his taxes going up!

I hope I will always visit and enjoy memories, but I am ready to tidy up and put things in perspective. I think, for me, it was our wedding that brought clarity to the idea that now is the time and place to be. I plan on languishing longer in the present, but also gearing up for a hopeful future ahead right now. Chebeague is a place that allows you to do that.

The Foot Doctor, Dr. Rybka, is coming to Chebeague on Wednesday, October 14 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Call 829-6463 for an appointment.

If you request the absentee ballot now, we will get the ballot to you as soon as we receive them from the State. Please call the Town Office if you have questions, 846-3148. Everyone seems to want to recycle, but there continues to be a problem with WHAT you are trying to recycle. Please take a moment to review the items you and your family put in the recycling bin. If you need assistance, please ask Gail Jenkins, our Transfer Station attendant. If you are in doubt, please just put it in the trash bin. CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC?

2020 Annual Members Meeting

Remembering Trent...

On 8/15 CTC held its annual member meeting via Zoom. Visit the News and Info page of our web- site for links to the Pow- erPoint presentation and audio of the meeting. In 2019, CTC revenue was $1,239,000 and net income was $63,800. Current assets (mostly cash) in December 2019 were $1,106,000. Net fixed assets grew from $547,000 in 2018 to $1,594,000 in 2019. The i n c r e a s e o f o v e r $1,000,000 was due to the purchase of the office building and the Inde- pendence. Liabilities increased from $246,000 to $1,447,000. Equity i n c r e a s e d f r o m $1,189,000 to $1,253,000. In addition to our strong financial performance, the major accomplish- ments of 2019 were: con- tinued excellent safety record, purchase of the office building, and the delivery of the Independ- ence. Regarding the impact of COVID 19 - we project that without a major change in current trends, CTC will have sufficient cash for operations through 2021. Members should send their ballots to the CTC office by 4PM on 8/25 to approve minutes, Treas- ure Report, and to elect Directors and the Clerk.

CTC OFFICE (207) 846-5227/846-3700 16 North Road, PO Box 27 Chebeague Island, ME 04017 chebeaguetrans@gmail.com chebeaguetrans.com The CTC office will be closed on Labor Day— September 7th. September Birthday Christine Englund 9/27 Happy Birthday! Weekday School Boats As of 8/20, CTC is working with the school superinten- dent on plans for the school boats. We will publish a bulletin when plans have been finalized. Purchasing Ferry Tickets Ferry tickets can be purchased online at our website. Tickets must be purchased prior to boarding the ferry. The deckhand will give you the tickets you purchased when you board the ferry. Individual tickets are now available.

Everyone who knew Trent Lloyd-Rees admired him. He was tragically taken from us on August 5th in an accident aboard the ship SLNC Good- will where he served as a 3rd engineer. He was 23 years old. We were fortunate to have Trent work as a deckhand at CTC in 2018 while attending Maine Maritime Academy. Trent worked on both the ferry and the barge. He was a natural mariner and made a strong im- pression on those who worked with him and knew him. We would like to share some of the comments we have received from his co-workers and the community. “ I’m thankful he worked on the Islander and that so many Chebeaguers had the chance to interact with him and find out what an excellent kid he was. His work ethic and generous spirit really did make the world a bet- ter place, wherever he happened to be. His death is a huge loss...perhaps one that will make those who knew him want to be a little better them- selves.” (Island resident—commuter) “ Trent always had a smile and a willingness to be of help to all in any way he could. His two everyday encounter sayings were “Can I help you?” and “Thank you”. I always got a kick out of the ‘thank you’ because he would do the work and then ‘thank’ me! Mature beyond his years and a true gift to all he encountered. RIP” (CTC bus driver) “You always knew it was going to be a good trip when Trent was the deck- hand. His cheeriness rubbed off on everybody.” (Island resident) “Some of my favorite CTC memories include Trent. You couldn't help but enjoy working with him. He kept things fun while always managing to get the job done. I always counted on his sense of humor to make a regular work day a great one. Working with Trent, you always learned something. He was an amazing problem solver. I can't get on any of our boats with- out a memory, whether it was working in a Nor'easter on the Islander, barging up the river, or the first time he looked around the Independence. Trent left a mark on this company and we certainly gained a lot by having him as part of our crew. “ (CTC captain) “My first impression of Trent as a deckhand was how energetic and gre- garious he was. It didn't matter if the boat was full to capacity. His de- meanor never changed. Always with a smile and a thank you. A special kind of young man.” (Island resident—commuter) “Trent was an extraordinary young man whose intelligence, maturity, initiative, drive and ingenuity were exceptional for anyone, but especially for someone of his age. Above that though, he was a great guy, a pleasure to be around and a lot of fun to work with. He will be missed .” (CTC Cap- tain) Trent was a very special young man who made a lasting impression on our community. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.

A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR RESCUE SERVICES On June 23, Nick Wessell, our two four-month-old puppies (now five months) and I arrived on Chebeague Island after driving up from Saint Simons Island, Georgia. We had started to unpack the car when I got caught up in the puppies’ leashes and promptly fell, crashing my head against the kitchen door jam. Nick, who could see the gash and blood, convinced me to call Chebeague’s EMTS to have a look at it. Perhaps I thought some Steri- strips and all would be fine. The Rescue team arrived almost instantly. After examination, and a lot of discussion, they convinced me that I had to go to the ER. However, we had barged our car over. Neither Nick nor I were allowed on the Independence as we had just started our two- week quarantine. What to do? With great aplomb the Rescue Service transferred me to a gurney, gently secured me in the ambulance and delivered me onto the Independence. A little while later I found myself in the ER at Mercy Hospital. Although the day is a blur and I don’t remember the names of anyone who helped me, I’d like to thank each and every one of them. Turns out I needed stitches after all. Thank you all and Blessed be Gwendolyn Stevens
