April 2020 • Issue #4 • Chebeague Island Council Calendar
On the Cover This month we get to glimpse back to a happy Easter in 1957. Donna Damon provided us with a photograph of Donna and her brother, David Miller. What joy and hope April brings! Even in these unsettling and trying days, here on the island, we are fortunate enough to be able to look around and witness the arrival of the robins and the always miraculous emergence of tulips and daffodils. We are all in this together and as spring moves forward, so will we. Have faith and trust in one another. Best wishes from all of us at the Island Council. From CUMC and the Island Council From CUMC and the Island Council The Island Council, Food Pantry, and the Chebeague United Methodist Church are partnering together to facilitate community support as we f ce the uncertainties surrounding COVID-19. At this time, we recommend: • Check your prescription refills. Many pharmacies are allowing for an early refill of medications so that people can have supplies on hand. Check with your pharmacy. • Check in on your neighbors regularly. It is important that people know there are those on the island willing and able to help one another with any needs, especially those who are more at risk. • Make extra (freez ble) m als. Whenever y u bake a m al or casserole that is easy to freeze, consid r making two so that one can be stored in your freezer to share if there is a need. We have some space in the Parish House refriger tor and fr ezer to store food, but don’t hav the capacity for significant long-term storage, s please don’t bring any prepared food until we ask. • Follow the CDC’s recommendations around requesting medical assistance. You can find the information at https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/infectious- disease/epi/airborne/coronavirus.shtml. You can also find the link on chebeague.org. The F od Pa try is looking for donations so that anyone who needs foo can get wh t they need. You can find a list of current needed items on chebeague.org or on the church’s website. You can also donate funds. Items can be dropped off in the back room of the Parish House at any time. Call or text Jen Corson (415-271-0096) before donating perishable items. We encourage people to use the Island Market for necessary items. You can also avail yourself of the Island Council’s additional resources. They can assist people with food cards for items that it is difficult for the Food Pantry to store, heating assistance, and medication assistance. They also administer CTC tickets for regular medical therapies and scholarship funds to the Commons for assistance with Chebeague Cares. Finally, we are put together a list of volunteers who are willing to help check in on neighbors. If you are interested in helping, please contact Donna Damon at publicservantone@gmail.com or at 846-5140. We are also putting together a list of other resources – anything from making food, to assisting with childcare. Let Melissa know at 846-4106 or at ml.yosuadavis@gmail.com what you can do to help. Chebeague Swap/Sell on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/786976688023112) is a great place to share needs like picking up prescriptions or groceries or other supplies. COVID-19 Plans – At this point, we are not going to hold in-person worship. We will continue to evaluate this decision based on the recommendations from the CDC and our state governor. We believe social distancing is best to help minimize the spread of this disease and to keep people safe. However, even though we cannot physically be together, we can still connect with each other online. I will be continuing to find creative ways we can support one another, pray for one another, and experience community together. Please stay in touch with us on our website and on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/chebeagueislandumc) for the latest news and updates and ways to keep connected. I will also be using our Instagram page (@chebeagueislandumc) for communication.
One of the blessings of using more online resources and digital ways of gathering is that year-round and seasonal friends can be in closer connection. I am thankful for the opportunity this gives us to be in community together in new ways.
Right now our sanctuary and Parish House contine to be open. Please sanitize your hands upon entry to either space (there are stations for your use). While in the Parish House, please wipe down surfaces after use. Use elbows to open the door when exiting.
As always, please don’t hestitate to be in touch with me about any questions or concerns you have. I am praying for all of you in this time,
Peace, Melissa

From the Town Office
From Marjorie – I have to keep reminding myself that the Coronavirus emergency situation is real and not some Stephen King movie. We are all frightened and nervous about what the future holds, but as many have said, I’m happy I live on Chebeague during these times. The information changes daily and we are trying to adjust as we go. There are a lot of rumors out there, so please call me with questions and I will try to help you. If I don’t have the answer, I will try to get one for you. I’m not going anywhere, so please call the Town Office or my cell with questions, 207-975-3074. We all received notice on March 18, 2020 that Chebeague Transportation Company will not transport passengers who suspect they have COVID-19. The Town and the Fire/Rescue Department are actively working on alternative transportation options.

For those of you who might want to come to Chebeague to wait out the pandemic, I think Rob Snyder, President of the Island Institute, said it best. Island Commons Suspended Marty’s Memories By Marty Trower
My memory doesn’t hold anything comparable to the situation we are all in now. No one’s does. Yet there was that time, for me, on September 11 th , 2001 when I felt almost as suspended as I do now. I was newly retired from a long and stressful career in teaching. I was wallowing in my good fortune, spending time on the island. I was basking in the early morning gloriousness of that sparkling late summer day. Then the news came over the radio that the country had been attacked and the World Trade Center was in flames. Although I was engulfed in fear anddisbelief engulfed us as we tried to take it in, our springer spaniel dogs jumped and danced at our feet. How could they know, let alone understand? They wanted their walk, this was their time. We had to take them down onto the beach. The dogs exploded their exuberance into the still warm air, kicking up sand and seaweed as they raced each other into and out of the ocean. We watched them, felt their joy but we could not talk. We looked and we listened but there were no planes at all up in the sky. There were only the sounds that birds and waves made. We didn’t know what would happen next beyond our shore.
Now, during this time of self-imposed quarantine as a pandemic rages and encroaches upon us, walking on the beach, through the woods and even on the roads has taken on new meaning. It is a chance for ‘distance socializing’. I invite friends with or without dogs to join me when I set out, trying to be a good dog parent to Emma. Since her fur-cut in February, fourteen-year-old Emma has had had the energy and endurance of a young pup. Or some other animal species I don’t know about. She seems to sense a change in my habits or attitude since the virus has clouded our human world. She is reacting by pulling me out into hers, tugging on her leash and walking further and faster and yes, sniffing longer. When meet up with people on these walks we stay six feet apart and Emma is not allowed to be patted. Yet, it is a chance to see people in person and gauge in their faces their concern. I also see the proud lift in their expressions as they accept responsibility for others with their caution and distance. Unlike September 11th, 2001, this time the people who started a war, because they attacked us, are sharing a common enemy with us, one without human traits.

Coronavirus Policies
Free Cruise for Non-Profits
Using Green Tickets
Given the uncertainties surrounding the COVID- 19 virus, and the critical need to protect our crew members and passen- gers, CTC has cancelled evening boat trips. (Please see our notice elsewhere in the Calen- dar.) We all need to stay healthy. We need to ensure that CTC can continue to operate to serve this island and everyone who depends on us for transportation. Safety is our highest priority. At this point, while we will continue to respond to rescue calls, CTC can- not transport passengers who suspect they have COVID-19. CTC is fol- lowing the recommenda- tions of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Maine health authorities and industry experts. We are working very hard to reduce contact and exposure of our crew and passengers. New policies are being put in place and more may be in order as additional information becomes available. Details about the new guidelines were posted and distributed to the community on March 18. CTC is extremely grate- ful for the positive re- sponse we have received since then from the Chebeague community for our decisive response and proactive proce- dures.
Now that we have two ferries again, CTC will resume donating one cruise per summer to an island nonprofit 501 (c) 3. The organi- zation will decide the purpose of the cruise (fundraiser, apprecia- tion cruise, etc.) and the cruise course. To apply for the free cruise, organizations must submit a written request via email to the CTC office (chebeaguetrans@gmail.com) by April 30th. The request must include the name and purpose of the nonprofit and contact infor- mation. By May 15th, a drawing will be held that selects the winner for that year. Once an organization has been selected, it will be ex- cluded from future drawings until all qualifying applicants have received a free cruise. Services provided include the crew and a cash bar (net proceeds to be donated to the organization) and a sound system. Entertainment and snacks are not provided. Cruise Restrictions a. Cruise is for two consecutive hours and cannot be divided into multiple shorter cruises. (Longer cruises are subject to an addition- al hourly rate). b. Notice to CTC Customers and the Chebeague Community March 18, 2020
Because the welfare of our crew members is essential to the welfare of the Chebeague community, CTC is taking additional steps to protect them (and all of us) from exposure to the COVID-19 virus. Effective Saturday, March 21, CTC is cancelling evening boat trips Monday through Saturday. The last boat each day will depart Chebeague at 6:15 p.m., returning from Cousins at 6:30 p.m. On Sundays, the last boat will depart Chebeague at 4:45 p.m. returning from Cousins at 5:00 p.m. This new schedule will remain in effect until further notice. With this temporary , shortened schedule we will be able to reduce the number of employees working and their potential for exposure. Without a healthy crew, CTC cannot serve this island. The safety of everyone is our highest priority. • If you think you may have been exposed to COVID-19, it is imperative for the safety of our crew members and other passengers that you do not use the ferry. CTC will not transport passengers who suspect they have COVID-19. Alternative means of travel to the mainland will be arranged by emergency responders, available 24/7 by calling 911 . If you exhibit symptoms of COVID-19, please contact a healthcare professional. Travel to the mainland for testing must be part of a coordinated plan with your healthcare provider. • Rescue calls: CTC will continue to provide rescue service for all other emergencies. • Freight: Please load and unload your own freight. Deckhands will no longer handle freight at Cousins. Carts will continue to be available and may be left on the float or brought from the wharf at the time of boarding. • Tickets: Deckhands will no longer punch tickets but instead ask passengers to check off each trip on their own tickets with their own pen. (Pens will be available.) Ticket purchases will be transacted in a manner to reduce exposure/contact. • Parking fees and tickets: A new system will be put in place to reduce exposure/contact during the purchase of parking tickets at the CTC lots. • Restricted access on the Independence: Access to the wheelhouse and deckhand work station area will be restricted to reduce exposure/contact with our crew. • Boarding times: To give our crew ample opportunity to clean the boat between trips, passengers may not board earlier than 15 minutes before departure from Chebeague. The CTC crew and board are taking the threat of a COVID-19 outbreak seriously so that operations are not interrupted, or the boat taken out of service because of contamination. We welcome suggestions and ask you to please follow these new procedures so that we all remain healthy. It is very possible that further changes in operations will be necessary in the near future. We will do our best to notify everyone through https://www.chebeague.org/, the CTC webpage http://www.chebeaguetrans.com/ and our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ChebeagueTransportationCompany/ The following safety measures will be implemented immediately:

The CIHS is hard at work on the upcoming exhibit: Growing Up on Chebeague. This is Chebeague’s con- tribution to Maine’s Bicentennial Cele- bration. We are having so much fun!
Although we can’t be sure right now when we will open because of the virus, we will be ready when that time comes! The photos and artifacts that have been shared tell the story of a community that has valued its children and has instilled a sense of place over the
generations from the CivilWar to today. The sea, shore, woods, and fields of Chebeague are the backdrops for seasonal activities that showcase creative play! www.chebeaguehistory.com
The evening’s lecture will be given by Michael Porter on the history of American mapmaking, using historical maps of Chebeague as examples!
Spring into the spring market! Contact us for a confidential conversation about selling or buying, on the mainland or here on the island.

Many thanks to all the empathetic and skillful people (Rescue and others) who came to my aid when I fell at the top of the boat ramp a few weeks ago. No, I didn’t want a trip to the hospital, but I am very grateful I was unequivocally told I was getting one. Members of the Chebeague community demonstrate their wonderful responsiveness over and over. Affectionate regards, Mary Cushman
