THANK YOU

Words simply fall short in expressing our gratitude to the Island Community for your generous care and support over the course of many years with our parents, Audrey and Dick Collins. So many times, you were a specific answer to prayer with your help on the bus, the boat and so many offers for transportation that improved the quality of life for our parents and put our minds at ease. We also know that there were many times that you lent a helping hand of which we were unaware. Your generous food and time contributions for Audrey’s memorial reception were arms of love wrapped around each of us during an emotional and difficult time. Thank you for every expression of love that made all the difference for our family as we maneuver through grief and loss. We are forever grateful to this small but mighty Island Community. Island Commons Marty’s Memories - Shoreline By Marty Trower

Since there is no choice when you have a dog, you go on at least one walk a day, whether or not you feel like going. You see a lot. You notice a lot and some of the time, you remember. It isn’t just photos, I realize, that propel you into the past and tease your thoughts into the future. My dog is an old dog now and because she is deaf and partially blind I always have her on a leash, even on the beach. Her huge nose houses a spaniel’s great sense of smell and I don’t think she sees herself as handicapped at all. Where she used to snort around Seventh Heaven and seek out those wild rabbits - she had flushed and chased on the path the first week she moved to the island - well, it’s different now. I have eased off on ambling at the water’s edge looking for sea glass in favor of being pulled up into the earthy, immediate shoreline of Hamilton beach. Here, the dog sniffs with long concentration and I examine the bank. This is an old habit that started in my childhood with my father when he told me there might be Indian arrowheads imbedded there, in the remains of their ‘middens’. We weren’t allowed to disturb the earth, just concentrate and scan. We never ever spotted even one but that didn’t matter, we always looked. Then one day, when I was a full adult, I was walking the beach with a friend and Classified Ads Top Shelf Cleaning and Services: Cleaning, moving cars to and from the Stone Pier or Chandlers Wharf, snowplowing and snowblowing, and winter house watching—daily, weekly, or monthly—lawn mowing, and light tractor work. For more information, call Cindy at 207-846-1055. Seasonal Rental at 13 Island View Rd: Fully equipped summer home with 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, and private right of way to the water; $1100 per week plus a $300 security deposit. saw something in the gravely sand that made me boing into the air and scream. It was a time of jumping around and saying words my companion didn’t understand, until I held out the beautiful relic, an arrowhead, nestled in my palm and we rejoiced together. This time we, the dog and I, returned home by going through the woods where the grand Hamilton Hotel used to stand. The dog pulled me much further into the woods than I normally go, and when she finally stopped and ‘glued’ her nose to the ground, I had to stay with her at the other end of the leash. In the still of the cold air, in a silence that allowed nothing in, I looked out over to the water and realized I was standing where the stairs and porch of the hotel used to be. Two of the remaining cottages were in my view and the land is now cleared so you could imagine the long lawn that stretched out down to their pier. I went home to my old photos scattered everywhere and found one of my father’s family gathered on that pier. They were formally dressed in 1920’s attire and posing with the water behind them, radiant. I can’t find that picture now. It must be in one of those piles scattered around. Maybe Donna Damon has it.

Lent Begins – Sunday, March 1 st through Sunday, April 5 th The season of Lent in the Christian year is a time of preparation for Easter. Many individuals take this time for soul- searching, to turn away from practices and mindsets that prevent a deeper connection with God, or try new rhythms and routines that draw them into the abundance of God’s love. As a church community, we’ll be exploring Paul’s letter to the Galatians from the New Testament through the lens of God Unbound: Wisdom rom Galatians for the Anxious Church. Written by Rev. Dr. Elaine Heath, God Unbound explores this book of the Bible written by the Apostle Paul at a time when the Galatians were wrestling with culture shifts and the nature of the church’s mission in the world. We, too, face cultural shifts in our wider world and within the church. We’ll read and study this book together as we learn how to follow the lead of the Holy Spirit and join with what Jesus is doing in the world.

On Saturday mornings starting March 14 th , we’ll have 4-week book study to discuss the material more deeply and consider our own experiences individually – and as part of the church here on Chebeague. If you are interested, please talk to Pastor Melissa so we can firm up a time and place. March 3 rd – Devotional at the Commons, 11:15 – 11:45 AM - Once a month, we’ll be offering a service at the Island Commons. We’ll sing some favorite hymns, read scripture and share a short devotional together, and spend time in prayer. Join us in this time of worship together! Listening and Discernment Sessions – Sunday, March 8 th and 15 th Save the date for these next sessions for discerning CUMC’s relationship to the wider United Methodist denomination. For these sessions, we will have people from our New England conference’s structure present to facilitate part of our conversation. These are held after Sunday morning worship. Interested in following our progress? Contact the office if you want to participate remotely or to receive updates via mail or email. You can also visit ne-discerners.org for updates on all the changes happening in the larger United Methodist Church denomination. Food Pantry – Our Food Pantry is always available for anyone who has need of it – no questions asked. There are lots of ways to avail yourself of what we provide: Make a meal for someone who just came home from the hospital or give a few items to a neighbor who could use some extra supplies, to name a few. We are always in need of donations, so next time you are grocery shopping, consider adding a few extra items to your cart to donate. For more information, drop a line to the Parish House at 846-6987 or at chebeagueislandumc@gmail.com .
