The deadline for submissions for the January 2019 issue is noon on December 20, 2018. The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submission is noon on the 20 th day of the month preceding publication. Submissions and ad copy may be mailed (P.O. Box 12), left at the Council office (247 South Rd.), or emailed ( chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com ) and sent as attachments (.doc; no pdfs) or included in the body of the text. As a courtesy and space permitting, island nonprofits are given up to a free half page each month to publish their news. Any such submissions exceeding a half page will be charged at the usual rate. All submissions become the property of the Chebeague Island Council, which reserves the right to edit them for length and clarity. Submissions that are not time sensitive may be held until there is sufficient space to publish them. Additional information about submissions is available at www.islandcalendar.weebly.com . Advertising rates are as follows: full page, $70; 1/2 page, $35; 1/4 page, $20; 4-line classified, $5; 6- to 8-line classified, $10. Each submission should include the intended publication date, size wanted, and the number of months the ad should run. All ads must be paid for at the time of submission. On the Cover Our cover this month features the Whalers! This group of talented islanders has been entertaining the community since the early 1990s, when a small group, led by Deborah Gordon, gathered to go caroling. Soon they were joined by others, and the idea of a choral group was launched. Deborah Gordon was the first music director, followed by Martha Hamilton, John Howard, and now Ben Yosua-Davis. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear beautiful music and join your family, friends, and neighbors in celebrating this island tradition. About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. Available on-line at Chebeague Island News ( www. chebeague.org ) or www.islandcalendar.weebly.com and mailed to every occupied residence on the island, for a small additional fee, it can also be delivered by first-class mail to Island Council members who are off island at the time of publication.

’Tis the season for holiday planning along with preparing for another winter with cold nights and high fuel bills. Please remember your friends and neighbors who may be feeling the financial stress that goes with staying warm and safe and consider donating to the Island Fuel Fund. The generous support of the island community allows the Council to provide fuel assistance to anyone in need. Call Ester at 846-4178 to arrange for fast, anonymous help with all types of heating fuel. Please send your donations to the Chebeague Island Council, P.O. Box 12, Chebeague Island, ME 04017. The entire community thanks you. The new steps on the Thrift Shop are almost finished, and they look great. Thank you to Michael Darling for doing a great job and being so easy to work with! The Council is grateful to the former Grange members for allowing us to take over ownership of this lovely old building and continue the summer Thrift Shop. And thank you to Bruce Riddle for repairing the parking area and allowing the Thrift Shop customers to continue to use the old “Grange Road.” The Chedemption baggettes have been working hard sending over the last of the bags and boxes from this summer! Casco Bay Lines allows only a limited number of bags or pallets at a time, so it has taken this long to clear up the backlog. If you believe in the importance of recycling, in clean oceans, and in supporting the island nonprofits, please call Ann Thaxter and find out how you can help. The Council Board would like to wish everyone Merry Christmas and a safe, happy, and healthy New Year. See you at the Whalers Concert! The Recompense Fund annual reports are coming soon; please watch for yours in the mail. As a fund supported by many Chebeaguers for the benefit of the nonprofit community and in turn the sustainability of the island we love, the report provides information about all aspects of our activities. One of our goals is to be totally transparent, so we are showing the money we have raised; the names of our donors, especially the generous Raymond Family Foundation challenge; every grant made; our investment results; and the progress of our endowment. If you did not receive a copy, please contact recompensefund@ gmail.com . Happy Holidays to all! News from the Recompense Fund

Marty’s Memories: Dogs on the Island by Marty Trower

T he best thing about having a dog, of course, is that it gets you out and moving—and enjoying—even when you think you’re not going to like it. Sometimes it’s hard, though, like Fall Back and Spring Ahead times. I’ve noticed that dogs are so patterned that when the time changes and it’s their time to go out, they won’t take no for an answer, and your logical explanation for not going now sounds like gibberish to them. They pester on, until you get going and take them anyway, even though it’s inconvenient. Then again, I never regret being talked into those walks unless the weather is painful or I have an injured walking appendage as I do now, so I just go slower. I never plug anything into my ears because what I hear along the way is fascinating. Without car noises, subtle bird sounds come across and train whistles, far off across the water, let you know that there is fast travel somewhere, but not where you are roving. My dormant thoughts get an airing too. I let myself think about the people we have lost over this year and find I have enough memories to keep me company for miles. This is solace. The second-best thing about having a dog is that they provide you with many loving and entertaining memories. In fact, some make me laugh out loud, even though I’m alone. For instance, one day, walking back toward the east end, around the bend where you could go down to Springette’s beach, I was suddenly accosted by a time when, right here, years ago, Maggie and I were walking home from the village. It was summertime, before our teenage years, when we liked to be seen walking but were choosy about who we accepted rides from.

Eleanor Johnson’s car slowed, and she asked us if we wanted a ride. She was a neighbor of ours, our friend Stevie Johnson’s mother, so she was going our way. No, we said, we are out walking, but thanks anyway. She drove on just a bit, then slowed and stopped the car. She leaned over and opened the passenger door.We saw the Todd family’s liver and white springer spaniel looking up at her. “Biscuit, you want a ride home?” Eleanor called out. Biscuit looked up ahead then back at her and hopped in the car; the door slammed and off they went. Maggie and I stopped, amazed, smiling and saying, “Oh my, oh, only on Chebeague!” The members of the Chebeague Ladies Aid would like to thank everyone who joined us at our Christmas Fair on Saturday November 17. We hope a great time was had by all. With your help, we can look forward to assisting the church and other island nonprofits. And now back to sewing, knitting, and crafting. Come join us on Thursdays at the Parish House. Jane Frizzell, President The Mail Thank you from the Ladies Aid

Service Cancellation

While CTC recognizes that many people rely on our service to get to school or work, we must always consider safety first. Please re- view our policies below and use one of our communication chan- nels to stay informed about ser- vice interruptions. Bus Service: If school is can- celled in Yarmouth, the first bus of the day is automatically can- celled. There will not be a notice of this trip’s cancellation. Any other trip cancellations will be communicated as soon as possible. Ferry Service: When making a decision to cancel a boat trip, we will consider not only the ability of the boat to run in the storm, but also our passengers’ ability to safely board the boat. Therefore, conditions where the wharves, ramps, and/or floats are un- safe will result in a ferry trip cancellation . This would include; high winds making the floats rock

dangerously (usually at Cousins), storm surges that put the top of the Stone Wharf under water, and excessive ice and/or snow on ramps, floats, or wharves. When adverse weather conditions force CTC to consider cancelling a ferry and/or bus trip, the company will make every effort to notify our customers as soon as possible. As soon as the decision is made, the information will be posted to the CTC’s website and Facebook page. An email will also be sent to Chebeague.org for posting. Emails and texts will be sent to those who registered on our web- site to receive notification. CTC intends to make the decision as soon as possible and post it at least 60 minutes before the sched- uled trip whenever possible. Safety First!!
