Marty’s Memories: Accepting Change by Marty Trower

I have had the great good fortune of spending at least part of almost every summer on this island for a little over seventy years. For the past fifteen years I have dwelled year-round in the family cottage on Hamilton Beach, and the best part, I am realizing, is having the time and peace of mind to contemplate the changes that I have absorbed over this time. It is usually from the porch, in all seasons, where the expansive negative space of the water pulls me toward a clutter-free place of understanding. It is not always a solitary thing. It was here, in a March twilight, sitting on top of stacked and noisy tarp-covered furniture, that my partner and I listened to the melting ice move on the water below us and realized, wordlessly, that there was more than a love of islands between us. This June, on the porch, a group of Soule Road neighbors gathered impromptu and celebrated Donny and Norah (Toohey) Alper’s transition from being long-time summer residents to making the island their year- round home. We couldn’t help it, so many of us traced our memories to many generations of summer natives and inevitably we turned to the water and spoke of the boats that used to bemoored in the cove, and the skippers and crew who manned them. We remembered the old days of the beginning of the yacht club: Gardiner Layng and Gordon Trower starting to race their small fiberglass sloops and concocting a little plastic and driftwood trophy for the winner. The yacht club rafting party, so many boats and people, all ages, red in the face from the slanted sun, laughing and wind-blown from

the thrill of the Round-Island race. We all got to know each other.

The hilarious meetings that included speeches from the commodores, the fish house punch, the annual presentation of the Bungle Trophy—a wooden sailboat clock with the CIYC burgee painted on the sail that only ran backward and was a dud wedding gift my father and mother had donated. What a great way to learn how to laugh at yourself and not take those things that go wrong too seriously. We used to carry the yacht club sign Nancy Hubbell had painted from her house to the placeofourmeeting, usually thecommodore’s house. Speaking of the commodore’s house, Paige Richardson once received a call from guests new to the island saying, “We’d like to take you out for dinner at your yacht club. Can you make the reservation?” Well, since my father was commodore at the time, she jokingly called my mother to find out what was on the dinner menu! The boats in the water are different now, but we marvel at them as they gradually appear at their moorings, filling up the cove and bobbing in safety. Fish house punch is still a mainstay at the yacht club meetings. I gave the tiny first trophy for racing to John Layng years ago; I’m probably the only one who still holds a picture of it and its significance in my head. Does the Bungle Trophy still get presented to the best goof of the season? Where is Nancy Hubbell’s sign? Dinner this year at Commodore Michael and Barbara Porter’s?

August 2018

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC? CTC Annual Members’ Meeting The 5th Annual Member Meeting held on 7/21 was well attended. Following are the highlights: President John Rent called the meeting to order and started the meeting by recognizing current and past directors. John also recognized the contribu- tion of CTC employees and their commitment to customer service and safety. Senior Deckhand Kim Munroe received special recognition and a big thank you for 30 years of service! John presented the Treasurer’s Report. 2017 was a very successful year with revenue of $1,187,557 and net income of $170,622. Current assets at year end were $974,563 - a strong position as we assume the debt for con- struction of the new ferry. In the President’s Report, John discussed the highlights of 2017 and 2018 priorities: Continued Focus on safety. CTC continued to exceed the required safety drills; participated in industry educational events; received an excellent Coast Guard inspection; and fo- cused on improvements in safe access to the ferry floats—specifically acquir- ing another motorized wheelchair and requesting that the Town explore options to install longer access ramps. Building and financing the new ferry. John reviewed the improvements in the new ferry design—with a focus on safety improvements. He reviewed drawings of the boat pointing out im- provements and changes to the Islander’s design. The new ferry will be four feet longer and one foot wider than the Islander in order to increase allowed passenger count to 119 (plus 3 crew). (This was the passenger count allowed on the Islander until 2012 when new Coast Guard regulations were effec- tive). The new ferry will be financed through a local bank. Current projec- tions are that cash flows and reserves will be sufficient to meet the debt obligation without significant pricing increases. (The projections assume we do not have a significant long term downturn in the economy). 2018 Priorities. Priorities for the current year include: 1) Supporting the build phase of the new ferry, 2) Working with the Town and boat crew on ramp improvements and wheelchair access, 3) Supporting the Stone Wharf and Sunset work of the Town, 4) Meeting the needs of our customers - being “fair and friendly but firm”. The Board reviews requests for exceptions in service carefully but is committed to being consistent in the application of its policies. General Manger Carol Sabasteanski presented the Service Report, Custom- er Service Program, a review of other 2017 activities, and a look at 2018. After the election of directors and the clerk of the corporation, the meeting was adjourned. The financial statements, slide presentation, and meeting minutes can be found on the Members page of our website. The page is password protected. Members should email the office if they need the password.

Sue was a strong advocate for the needs of the com- muters. We will miss you! Two current board members were reelect- ed at the Annual Meet- ing for another three year term - Wayne Dyer and Christopher Neumann. Kendra McKinnon was also elected for a three year term. John Wilson was reelected as clerk of the corporation. THANKS SUE! Many thanks to Sue Sawyer for serving six years as a CTC Director and several years as Treasurer.

CTC’s longstanding policy is that “loaner” vehicles are only al- lowed when the vehicle with the annual park- ing permit is undergo- ing repairs. In the past, we have tried to monitor the use of this policy through phone calls and hand-written notes. However, this practice is not practical operationally and we continue to experience abuses. Effective Au- gust 1st, all loaner vehicles must get written approval from the office and the approval must be displayed in the windshield prior to parking the loaner at our lot. Otherwise they will be subject to towing. August Employee Birthdays Captain Matt Ridgway - 8/17 Captain David Etnier - 8/29 for full and part time deckhand positions in the fall. Community Matters: Pitch in at Chedemption

Wow!! In 2017, volunteers from 13 island nonprofits packed and shipped off 40,951 glass bottles, 74,860 cans, and 16,310 plastic bottles. Impressive as those numbers sound, this task is never ending, and we need your help to keep this Chebeague Island Council program running. The Chedemption schedule for each nonprofit is listed to the right and posted on the back wall of the Chedemption shed under the roll of plastic bags. Your participation benefits each participating nonprofit, keeps several tons of trash from our waste stream, and helps ensure that our roadsides are free from bottle and can litter. So please call your favorite nonprofit and sign up for a slot or two! The Chedemption “Baggettes” could also use your help with the weekly task of loading boxes and bags for transport to Chandlers Wharf every Thursday at 7:45 a.m. Meet us at the transfer station. When the founders sat on Houghton’s porch at the top of Wharf Road a hundred years ago and planned a golf course near the shore, they did not consider the need for irrigation. That problem was left for subsequent club members to solve. The first irrigation sprinkler system used deep drilled wells and stored water in 1000-gallon fiberglass tanks behind the clubhouse that was piped to sprinklers around all nine greens.More than a decade ago Greens Committee chair Wink Houghton convinced the members to replace that irrigation system with one that improved the sprinklers and placed August is the peak of summer here; visitors pile off the Islander , and many notice for the first time, the Great Chebeague Golf Club. Outside of the dedicated members of the club, many Chebeaguers might take the golf course for granted, never considering what an accomplishment it represents. Although some may know that the clubhouse moved to the ledge in the middle of the course was a rescued eighteenth century farmhouse, fewer are aware that it is the oldest building in use as a golf clubhouse anywhere in the country. This summer the latest development catches the eye of every passerby on the South Road: the pond near the road has been doubled in area, and a solar floating aerator fountain decorates the surface.

Year-round rentals: I am trying to identify year-round rental opportunities for young families. Please contact me with ideas: Eldon Mayer at vixenskipper@gmail.com . One great pleasure of August is the bloom of all the wildflowers and berries. This has been a splendid year for our blueberries and strawberries, and the grapes appear well on their way to bounty. We have special praise for the island gardeners who have encouraged milkweed to blossom. We are starting to see the evidence of returning monarch butterflies that depend on milkweed to thrive. We have begun bird and butterfly plantings on our farm and have taken seed pods from Chebeague along with Newcomb roses to start. August is the month to plant and scatter new seeds, tubers, and bulbs for future wildflowers. a pump in the small pond that uses groundwater to irrigate the course. This is a significant environmental improvement for the island. He also implemented the swale across the second fairway that drains excess water from the clay soil in the field to collect in the pond as well as the drainage line that snakes all the way down the hill by the inn and adds more water to the pond. Because the sprinklers only run in the early morning, most are unaware of the watering. Like his father before him,Wink has dedicated his life to the improvement of the Great Chebeague Golf Club, and we have all benefited from those efforts. The only course in Casco Bay is in the best condition it has ever been and provides a special feature to our island.

As we head off to our 4th of July family gathering, Michael and I are filled with gratitude for Chebeague Island. We feel so grateful for the rescue team. With their calm manner and kind words they helped us get through our worst day. Thanks to the boat crew who gave up their time to get us to the hospital. Thanks to our neighbors on Carter’s Point Road who reached out to visit and lift things. Thanks for the dog-walking help; thanks to all the people who visited, brought us cake, helped me get home late Sunday night, and shopped for us; and thank you to the many people who offered kind words and help on the bus and ferry. I am happy to say Michael is doing well. He can’t wait to get behind the wheel of his truck! I am hoping to keep him off the zipline. Our kids made a crash test dummy for him!! We feel so blessed to have landed on Chebeague Island! Beth Grunko Junior Golf Camp Family How does one define a family? Sometimes it is just the people you’re related to by blood and marriage, and sometimes you’re lucky enough to live in a place where everyone becomes a family in a time of need. That is what we have here on Chebeague. The night Scott’s boat caught fire, we had so many “family” members who jumped in to help and we feel so thankful to everyone. We are very grateful to those who jumped into their boats when the explosion took place. Thank you to John Layng and his two nephews and to Mark Lickus who were able to get Scott out of the water and into the Zodiac. Thank you to Ralph for going directly to Littlejohn to protect the survivor and ride into the hospital with the Yarmouth Rescue. Thank you to the Yarmouth Rescue for being there for the Town of Chebeague when in need. Scott is alive and healing today because of the efforts of our extended Chebeague family, and we are eternally grateful. From the Family of Scott McCollom Thankful
