The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submission is noon on the 20 th day of the month preceding publication. Submissions and ad copy may be mailed (P.O. Box 12), left at the Council office (247 South Rd.), or emailed ( chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com ) and sent as attachments (.doc; no pdfs) or included in the body of the text. Images and photographs should be sent in a .jpg, .jpeg, or .rtf format. Please do not use the old email address at island. calendar@chebeague.net, as this is an inactive account. As a courtesy and space permitting, island nonprofits are given up to a free half page each month to publish their news. Any such submissions exceeding a half page will be charged at the usual rate. All submissions become the property of the Chebeague Island Council, which reserves the right to edit them for length and clarity. Come to the USM Health Screening Clinic at the Hall on Saturday April 7 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. This annual event is provided by the USM School of Nursing and Dr. Helge Reimann, dermatologist. It’s a wonderful opportunity to get a free “spring tune up” right here on Chebeague. It is not too early to start sending in those ideas for the 4 th of July Parade theme. The winner gets a free lobster roll, so get those wheels turning! Schoolhouse Seconds Thrift Shop is now accepting donations. Please call Christine Auffant or the Council office for more information. We are hoping to get some of the much needed repairs started this spring and are asking for volunteers to help. We all love the Thrift Shop because it is a great way to recycle, find wonderful bargains, help your neighbors, and have fun, but we need some serious carpentry help to keep the building a safe and pleasant home for this Island tradition. Please let Christine or any Council member, know if you are willing to lend a hand. The Council will be sending out membership forms for 2018 in early April. Our membership was up last year, and we hope to continue this growth. The Council Board and its volunteers give so much to this community. Being a Council member gives you an opportunity to support and participate in all the Council’s programs that help make our Island community the best, whether it is the Samaritan and Fuel funds, Chedemption, or the 4 th of July festivities. So, please join your neighbors and friends and become a member of the Island Council!

Nomination Papers Available— Nominating papers will be available at the Town Office beginning March 2.We will have four vacancies: David Hill and Mark Dyer on the Board of Selectmen and Jen Belesca and Jeff Putnam on the School Board have terms that end June 30, 2018. Marty’s Memories: Where Are the Birds? by Marty Trower

I’d almost forgotten about the birds. Once in a while I would spot a vigorous chickadee whipping past the ice-blurred kitchen window, fighting against the wind to land and eat from the feeder outside. Winter is usually a time to slow down and marvel at the birds, noticing their little behaviors for attaining food, their socialization with others, and admiring their plumage. I had not been seeing much activity this year. Yet, before the harsh weather really hit hard, I spent a lot of time devising ways to keep the squirrels from getting at the seed and storing it inside my house by chewing through anything in their way, ruining my house and, thus, my life. I stretched a clothesline from a hook near the kitchen window to the maple tree off but in front of the window, then across to a shepherd’s hook in the ground. I propped up the middle of the line with a tall branch with a “V” at the end at the spot where I could hang the feeder. That way I could lift the feeder up higher after I filled it. I had forgotten about the acrobatic skills and determination of the squirrel, of course. I should have known. Before long, I was gawking at an on-going performance of Cirque de Soleil proportions. He (?) would appear high up the tree, edging around the trunk, near where the clothesline had been wrapped and tied, tossing his head from side to side, then spring up and land on the line for just a second. You wouldn’t want to miss this part. He would dive from the tree to the line in one impulsive leap and travel at great speed, upturned—still hanging on with the tiny claws of all four feet—down to the feeder, where he would be whacked off by the impact and twirled into the air, landing daintily on his feet. This zip-line trip took about three seconds. I was laughing so hard that I never saw him race back up the

tree to do it all over again, but he must’ve because this act was repeated, again and again. I was so entertained I forgave him for his thievery and destruction. Another time I tried hanging the feeder way up in a high branch of that maple tree. I had to use my eight-foot ladder to get up there and hang it. I thought this was the answer, and I was pleased. But I forgot about the ladder when I went off in the car to do an errand. When I came home and glanced out at the tree, I saw one squirrel running up the ladder to the suspended feeder and one running back down, his cheeks bulging with bird seed. If squirrels have a sense of humor, I’ll bet they were having a great laugh on me this time. The thing I wonder is, was it the same squirrel performing these antics again and again or different ones? They all look alike to me. What about the birds? When the cardinals return, as they did for a short time this week, I talk to them as if they are “my” cardinals from last year, but are they? These could be new ones, because, again, they all look the same to me. I never name the birds who have been invited to come to the feeder, nor the squirrels who have not. Years ago, Jan Friis wisely stated that birds are the ideal pets because they can get their own food if you can’t provide it for them. I add that since we don’t tame and name birds and squirrels, they don’t really belong to us the way our cats and dogs do. They will not break our hearts when they pass on because they belong to the natural world and are part of a continuum that is not ours. It’s warmer now; snow is melting, dripping loudly. I can hear the birds talking and the squirrels scheming. 2017 Vessel Safety Report

Please respect our crew’s time off! Customers sometimes call our staff at night and on weekends when they are not on duty. If you need to reach the boat or bus the num- bers are published on the News and Information page of our website. We ask our Cousins lot customers to please pick up after your dog. We have provided waste disposal bags at both the parking lot and on the freight shed on the wharf. Dog waste left in snow banks in the winter will be on our neighbors’ lawns in the spring. Please respect our neigh- bors! Vehicles should obey the 5 MPH speed limit on Pogy Shore Drive. Our parking lot crew says several people are driving much too fast into and out of the lot. As we identify violators we will contact them. The third customer to call the CTC office on or after March 1st and say “We are good neighbors!” will receive a guest ticket book. We provide carts to our customers at a significant expense. Please respect this benefit and do not overload carts or take them home!

During 2017 the role of Safety Officer was transitioned from Matt Ridgway to Jeremy Ames. Prior to joining CTC Jeremy had received extensive mar- itime safety training as a commercial fisherman. 2017 Results The crew has once again far surpassed the required training drills per USCG, and will continue to do so. Members of our boat crew attended USCG industry day to stay abreast of current safety issues within our industry. In early 2017 Carol and Matt attended the annual PVA conference, learn- ing about current industry issues and best safety practices. They trained crew on relevant information. A Safety Works consultant visited the Island and trained several crew members on OSHA requirements. New 20 Adult and 10 Child PFDs replaced outdated PFDs An Emergency Radio for direct communication to dispatch and rescue crews was added to the wheelhouse communication arsenal. Many maintenance related projects took place which improve our vessel’s safety by updating old equipment or systems. Goals for 2018 In recent years, our boats have installed safety upgrades, We will be con- tinuing this practice with the boats, along with the addition of new pro- grams such as OSHA approved boat yard practices. Update CPR certifications as needed. Use Safety Works, PVA, OSHA, HAZMAT online resources for crew train- ing as needed. Build a damage control kit for Dovekie similar to Islander, and involve the barge in more drills. Introduce a new drill which focuses on “slips, trips and falls” hazards. Illu- minate or mark thresholds with Hi-Viz products. Oversee that the maintenance crew is OSHA compliant, obtaining a 5-gas meter for confined spaces and creating a written hazard assessment for each job. Create a more efficient Man-overboard station on the Islander. Continue replacement of outdated PFDs and other equipment. Install stern camera on Islander. Conduct three all hands training drills Continue to exceed the number of required Coast Guard safety drills.

Firefighter Footnotes The town is once again issuing burn permits, and they are still available for free through Ralph or Kim Munroe and Lisa Israel or online for a cost of $7 ($2 of which goes to the town) at www.maineburnpermit.com . As quite often happens this time of year, we are experiencing extremely high fire danger days.

Please be aware and follow the rules before starting any fires. All fires must be attended at all times and require a burn permit. Emergency Preparedness Tips

This new column is intended to offer tips for individuals to implement in their own homes during a power outage or other emergency and will complement an island-wide emergency plan. Tip # 1: Choose a container and a spot for that container with supplies that you have designated for an emergency. What supplies might you need first when the power goes off in the middle of the night? A flashlight or a lantern. What no batteries?

If you can grab that container, the flashlight with extra batteries will be there. (For those of you with cell phones, yes, you canuse themas aflashlight, but many of us remember the difficulties encountered recharging phones after this last storm.) Islands Helping Islands: Aid for Puerto Rico — Many thanks to the Hall and everyone who

raised funds to help Puerto Rico after last year’s hurricane Maria. Together, we raised $600 for the United Methodist Committee on Relief, an organization in which 100% of donations go directly to aid efforts. UMCOR is oftentimes the first on the scene when disaster strikes because of the network of thousands of United Methodist Churches and ministries.

Guatemala Lunch and Presentation — Continuing our journey around the world, through Works of Grace, Polly Wentworth and Peter Carleton are headed to Guatemala at the beginning of April on a medical mission trip. On Sunday March 4 following worship, we’ll eat some traditional Guatemalan fare in the Parish House and hear about Guatemala and the work of Salud y Paz. Come learn how we can help people in the Mayan villages of Guatemala gain access to education and health care. There will also be supplies that we can send with Peter and Polly on the trip; stay tuned for more details!

New Weekly Bible Study Sundays at 9:00 a.m. — Join us for a weekly Bible Study in the Parish House before SundayWorship, beginning March 4! We’ll have light refreshments and discussion around passages from the Bible. Bring your questions, your experiences, and a willingness to engage in conversation. All are welcome!

Food Pantry Donations Needed! — With this particularly difficult winter, the food pantry is in need of an extra boost of donations—of both food and financial support. We look to supply a variety of foods to those in need and gift cards for grocery items that are more challenging to keep on hand. You can drop off donations in the Parish House. For a more specific list of needs, contact Jen Corson, our food pantry coordinator.

EASTER AND HOLY WEEK SERVICES

Palm Sunday: Sunday March 25 at 10:00 a.m. —The day we remember and celebrate Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and the beginning of his final days of ministry on Earth. Maundy Thursday: Thursday March 29 at 7:00 p.m. —We remember the servanthood of Christ and his Last Supper. Good Friday Tenebrae Service: Friday March 30 at 7:00 p.m. —We journey with Jesus over his last few hours on Earth with this service of light into darkness.

Easter Sunday: Sunday April 1 —Easter Sunrise service on the East End at 6:00 a.m., with a light, informal, potluck-style breakfast to follow at the Parish House. Easter Worship service at 10:00 a.m. in the sanctuary. Easter Flower Forms —Easter flower forms will be available in various spots around the island next month. Forms are due on Friday, March 30. Flower drop off is Saturday March 31 between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. For questions, contact the church office at 846-6987. Know that the doors of this church are always open. When the world is heavy and you need a quiet space to pray, meditate, read, or simply be, the sanctuary is available for you.

Our Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a nor’easter early in the month, with the snow measured in feet, and major precipitation toward the end of the month. It predicts gusty winds throughout and, of course, rivers of mud. After all, it’s the beginning of mud season. The good news this month is spring! Our island’s place on the planet is tilting toward the Sun, and the days are growing longer. This month’s astronomical events feature the vernal equinox and the appearance of bright near planets in early evening darkness. Mercury, Mars, Venus, and Saturn all appear like beacons on the western horizon. Now that we have started viewing constellations and other celestial events like Northern Lights in the pitch darkness of Wiggins Mountain Road, When the history of this winter is written, it will be titled “Extreme.” All the storms have been difficult, beginning with the winds of November that took down many major trees all over the island through the frigid icy weeks of December and January, which consumed volumes of heating fuels and made walking treacherous on snow- covered and ice-choked paths, to the record mild days of late February, which deepened the mud ruts of unpaved roads.

Catholic Communion Service: A regular Catholic Communion Service will be held every Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at the church. We who are gardeners exult in March when the first flowers of spring poke through snow banks and mud. Nothing warms the heart more than the sight of the first crocuses and daffodils. This is the month to replace bird feeders with nesting boxes. Romeo has become very excited about greeting the Canada geese feeding on the fourth and fifth fairways. This winter was hard on the trees of Chebeague. Massive icons near our homes finally needed to be taken down. New specimens must be planted to eventually replace them. We have joined a group that is planting disease-resistant representatives of the traditional shade trees of New England. We watch the buds swelling on the magnolia tree we planted when we built our house. The little whip struggled and was beaten down by construction activity, but it survived. Now, it stands twenty feet tall and blossoms profoundly pink before any other trees have leafed out on the island. Like our tree, we have survived another winter. This year, Lent ends with the month and Easter falls on April first. we have become aware of the mitigating factor of light pollution here on the island in the night sky. When we walk out late with Romeo and look at the stars, we are surprised by the dim glow to the south over Portland. Also, an industrial hum of traffic competes with the sounds of nature.
