Contents From the Island Council Notes from the Hall Island Commons From the Town Office
On the Cover Richard “Poochie” Ross’ boat, the Polaris , has long been a very recognizable landmark on Chebeague, known as much for its Christmas light display while ashore as its time serving as a lobster boat. This 36-foot red-cedar vessel was built in the “Beals Island” style by Harold Gower in the 1950s. Poochie purchased her in the early 1970s from fellow islander Tommy Bennett, who had her built as a pleasure boat, and she was then converted for use as a lobster boat. Her fine lines made her instantly recognizable out on the waters of Casco Bay, and she faithfully served Poochie for many decades. In 2009, he downsized to his current boat, The Green Hornet . At age 88, Poochie is the oldest working lobsterman on Chebeague, and since his teen years, he has enjoyed fishing solo, using several boats before working out of the Polaris . Among his many fond memories aboard the Polaris , Poochie especially enjoyed his times of silly banter on the CB radio with his fellow lobstermen, breaking up the long hours of hard work. Great times! (Photo courtesy of Cathy MacNeill.) About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. DECEMBER 2017 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND COUNCIL CALENDAR
Notes from the Council
This has been a busy year for the Council. We would like to thank the members of the Chebeague Island Grange for all their support, encouragement, and guidance as the Council took over ownership of the former Grange building; Dick and Diane Calder, Hartley and Dianne Brewer, and Fran Calder were always there to answer our questions and help us sort out this complicated transfer. Thanks also to Lew Holman for all his hard work making us “legal.” This is a huge undertaking for the Council, and we are grateful for the support of the community and the opportunity to keep the thrift shop going. I am happy to report that Schoolhouse Seconds had a great summer! Christine Auffant and her band of volunteers did an amazing job. Sarah Van Fleet was wonderful (as usual) helping Christine learn the ropes. Little by little the Council hopes to make the
necessary repairs so we can continue to keep the thrift shop going. The Council is happy to be able to offer another free Dental Clinic on December 20. Please call or email us to make your appointment for a cleaning and x-rays and to arrange follow-up care if needed. The Foot Ladies will also be here, along with Dr. Redmond and our nurse, Steve. If you or someone one you know needs help keeping warm this season, remember the Council can help. Through the generosity of neighbors caring for each other, the Fuel Fund is available to all islanders. There is no application process. Just call Ester at 846-4178 to arrange for delivery. The Council wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas and peace in the New Year!
Dr. Redmond of Casco Bay Chiropractic is coming to the Wellness Center on December 8 You can now have your chiropractic treatment here right here on the island! Call his office to schedule your appointment (829-1200), and let them know you would like to be seen on the island.
The Wellness Center with Steve Baybutt, RN, Is Open for Blood Draws, Blood Pressure Checks, PT/INR Testing, Medication Setup, Flu Shots, Dressing Changes, Suture Removal, Wellness Checks, and Health Information No appointment needed. No charge for these services. Tuesday December 12 and 26 • 9:00 to 11:30 a.m.

Notes from the Hall
We are thankful to all for their patience as we experienced our debut as a Red Cross Emergency Shelter. We charged a lot of cell phones, filled many water jugs, poured a lot of coffee, and managed to serve a delicious soup lunch on Wednesday. Two main problems became evident during our trial run: the current generator is not large enough to handle a multiday power outage, and there was some expectation that we would be serving meals every day or allowing unlimited kitchen use. Upgrading the generator will cost a lot, so we will have to be creative in finding funds to do so. Serving three meals a day is not part of our Red Cross agreement, nor is public use of the kitchen. We are working to address the need to feed people in very cold weather, but our all-volunteer staff does not have the ability to turn out dozens of meals day after day.
This month’s Community Lunch will be on December 13 and is being sponsored by John and Courtney Wilson. Once again, we are partnering with the CIUMC Food Pantry to raise funds for Christmas holiday meals. The suggested donation for each Community Lunch is $7, and half of all proceeds will go directly to the Food Pantry. We will also have a jar for any additional funds you would like to contribute. The last time we held this fundraiser we were overwhelmed by the response! Let’s do even better this year! Thank you for supporting the Hall and its various programs. We are happy to see you gathered round our tables each Wednesday. We wish you and yours a happy, warm, and safe holiday season.

Marty’s Memories: The Sweater by Marty Trower
Gladys and Albert Bennett’s variety store on Firehouse Road thrived in the summers of the 50s and early 60s. It was a good biking destination, just down the road from Bowen’s Garage, another active gathering place at the time. I remember now a trip to the store that set in motion an unexpected friendship on the island. On a soppy, gray day in my early teens my friend Maggie and I rode down to the store looking for yarn to knit sweaters. This was an ambitious undertaking prompted by too many dreary days without sunshine. I pushed hard to open the rain-swollen door, and everything inside seemed to jiggle and clang as we entered. Shelves of toiletries lined the walls, and above them, Albert’s slightly naughty illustrated jokes on wooden placards crowded the space. Next were tables and more shelves loaded with Maine souvenirs, many bearing the name “Chebeague Island,” and lots of candy and gum and small toys. We poked around the alluring offerings, cheered by the possibilities around us, until landing finally at the knitting supplies. I chose an aqua color yarn for my future sweater, and Maggie decided on black, of course. She knew it was a more grownup color and had the confidence to take it on.
Off to the side, from what may have been an alcove, we heard voices conferring at the small ice cream parlor counter. It was Jimmy Todd and Brother Toby, both large men, atop swiveling high stools discussing their latest diets. We gathered up our supplies and moving to the counter to pay for our yarn, we looked over at the “parlor.” There we spotted the tall empty parfait glasses with leaning long silver spoons in front of the dieters’ vacated places. So much for those diets! Maggie and I never got very far knitting those rainy-day sweaters. Maggie’s mother finally took hers to be finished by a professional knitter. Years later my mother found my half-knit and almost forgotten sweater in the bottom drawer of a bureau in the spare room. She suggested I might want to call longtime Chebeague summer resident and prolific knitter, Kitty Mayer. So, I did. Kitty accepted the challenge. I arrived at her home, afraid that she would remember me when she was a golf club director and I, a slothful new teenager fiddling away my days playing cards in the clubhouse instead of honing my golf skills. But instead I found her patient and helpful, and we ended up sharing our island stories. By fall, the sweater was complete and a new friendship had begun.

Contact Richard Bowen at rhbowen3@gmail.com or 207-831-6148. We have been through an eventful month on Chebeague. The world is in constant turmoil, and like it or not, we are all part of it. Forecasters warned us to expect high winds, and those winds howled all night, but then at 5:00 a.m. the power went out. At first light as we started to drive around and listened to the radio, we quickly realized that it was going to be at least a few days before the power was restored. Like many islanders we had had a generator for basic power, but we sold it at our yard sale. So, back to preelectricity roughing it. We have always heated with wood, and Paula has mastered the use of oil lamps. We had already filled the tub with water and started to assess the storm’s damage. As in the Patriots’ Day storm, huge fir trees were uprooted and fell west revealing stunted root balls, but none crushed houses. One uprooted in our front yard, and another huge tree snapped its trunk and landed inches from Dean Miller’s cottage. Again, what I learned from this event is the community spirit of Chebeague. All the volunteers stepped up, started clearing roads and setting up shelter at the Hall. One thing that changed from a decade ago is the need for recharging cell phones. At the Hall people lined up to recharge devices. Let’s realize how dependent we have become.
Personally, we have had to cope with the recent deaths of several members of our extended family. Don Munsey, Cathy Hunter, and Maureen McKuen were our neighbors on Chebeague, and their generosity to us will never be forgotten. Each one always gave of themselves willingly for the good of the community. Munsey is in the same category as Martha Hamilton, Fran Calder, and Mabel Doughty in my mind. His efforts in a thousand ways helped improve this community. We would have been hard pressed to repair the Brick House without his generous help. The first year we ran the games on the Fourth of July, Munsey provided the materials for those games while also organizing the parade. We are deeply immersed in holidays this month, but I hope everyone will join me in making a conscious effort to thank everyone who volunteers to help their neighbors and all the strangers they selflessly aid. I am truly thankful for the spirit of volunteers who go out of their way to help. Find a way to thank the many volunteers who make Chebeague so special.
