Chebeague Island Council Calendar

#12 | December 2016

December 2016 • Issue #12 • Chebeague Island Council Calendar

On the Cover The Methodist Episcopal Church, now the Chebeague United Methodist Church, was built in 1855 by Isaac Strout, who came to the island from Limington, Maine, and married Sarah Upton of Chebeague. It was remodeled and enlarged in 1893 at a cost of nearly $2000—including a new pulpit set and carpet. The present belfry was designed by Antoine Dorticos and erected in 1892 to1893 and was accompanied by a new entry. In 1902 a fine bell, weighing 850 lb, was purchased for $212. In 1912, kerosene lamps were removed and a gas system installed. A door and ramp were added to the east side of the church in December 1983, and new front steps and doors were donated in memory of the Ballard family in1987. (Photo courtesy of Cathy MacNeill.) About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. Available on-line at Chebeague Island News (www.chebeague.org) or www.islandcalendar.weebly.com and mailed to every occupied residence on the island, for a small additional fee, it can also be delivered by first-class mail to Island Council members who are off island at the time of publication. The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submission is noon on the 20 th day of the month preceding publication. Submissions and ad copy may be mailed (P.O. Box 12), left at the Council office (247 South Rd.), or emailed (chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com) and sent as attachments (.doc; no pdfs) or included in the body of the text. Images and photographs should be sent in a .jpg, .jpeg, or .rtf format. As a courtesy and space permitting, island nonprofits are given a free half page each month to publish their news. Any such submissions exceeding a half page will be charged at the usual rate. All submissions become the property of the Chebeague Island Council, which reserves the right to edit them for length and clarity. Submissions that are not time sensitive may be held until there is sufficient space to publish them. Additional information about submissions is available at www.islandcalendar.weebly.com. Advertising rates are as follows: full page, $60; 1/2 page, $30; 1/4 page, $15; 4-line classified, $5; 6- to 8-line classified, $10. Each submission should include the intended publication date, size wanted, and the number of months the ad should run.

DECEMBER 2016 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND COUNCIL CALENDAR

Notes from the Chebeague Island Council

It is great to have theWellness Center open, and Steve Baybutt, RN, is enjoying getting to know the island community. He is here every other Tuesday from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. He is available to draw blood, check PT/INR, measure blood pressure, change dressings, do medication setups and wellness checks, answer questions, and give that missed flu shot. There is no charge for this service, no appointment is needed, and transportation to the Wellness Center can be arranged. Please feel free to stop in and say hello. Helping to keep our island community healthy is the Council’s mission, and we are very pleased to be partnering with MaineHealth Care at Home to continue to provide health care on the island. In keeping with this mission, the Council will now be partnering with CTC to offer assistance to those who need to travel to the mainland for scheduled, ongoing medical treatment, such as chemotherapy or physical therapy. The expense of these frequent trips can quickly add up, and CTC and the Council are here to help. CTC and the Council can also help cover the cost of visiting family members who are

ill. The Samaritan Fund Program will be responsible for coordinating this. If you need help with these transportation costs, please call Ester at 846-4178. Winter is coming. Thanks to the support of the island community the Council is still able to provide fuel assistance. Please think of your island neighbors and friends and consider making a donation to the Fuel Fund. Every dollar given is used to buy fuel (oil, K1, propane, electric, wood), and the island fuel providers work with the Council to make sure that this assistance remains anonymous. With your help, no one will be cold this winter because they cannot afford fuel. Please send you tax-deductible donations to the Chebeague Island Council at P.O. Box 12. Thank you. The entire Chebeague Island Council would like to say thank you to Chebeaguers near and far for all their support, encouragement, and kind words. We are all grateful to live in this wonderful community and appreciate the hard work that goes on “behind the scenes” to help make this a place that we are truly thankful to call home.

The Wellness Center with Steve Baybutt, RN, Is Open for Blood Draws, Blood Pressure Checks, PT/INR Testing, Medication Setup, Flu Shots, Dressing Changes, Suture Removal, Wellness Checks, and Health Information No appointment needed.

Notes from the Hall

At this time of year especially, I would like to thank all those who help make the Hall the vital center of our community. Here’s a partial list of the volunteers and board members whose efforts keep us afloat: First, many thanks to our board members: To Gina, our co-president, who is quick to volunteer for any job, no matter how large or difficult; To Susie, our indefatigable scribe, whose impish sense of fun energizes all Hall events; To Dianne, our indispensable booking agent, thank you note writer, and all-around doer of everything; To Tad, our go-to guy for anything that needs repair, including the job of standing atop the wobbly ladder to replace the fluorescent bulbs; To Linda, for her unfailingly positive attitude; To Arlene, for her ability to get anything done well and in record time; To Beverly, at 19 years and counting as our treasurer for life, who never complains about doing the books or making deposits; To Gail, who is game for anything, but especially bingo; To Pat, who has finally gone uptacamp after years of service; And to Mary (mother of Nancy), our newest board member, for already pitching in and being a great sport. To Lynne, Sally, and Deb, who handle all the dirty Community Center jobs while we cheer them on; To Ruth and Wanda, our kitchen soup wizards, who keep the kettles stocked week after week and make sure no one goes hungry on Wednesdays; To Deb, Ester, Jackie, and now Barbara, who chop, stir, and dole out the soup and Mabel’s treasured secret-recipe rolls; To Linda Larrabee, for donating and making such beautiful flower arrangements for our Community Lunch tables; To Allyson, Jane, Mimi, Linda, Binkie, Barbara, and Sharon, for helping out and cleaning up after Community Lunch; To Jenny, Janna, Lisa, Erika, and Christy, for helping so much with the first Martha Hamilton Arts and Crafts Event—and thanks to all (especially Mike and Denise) who donated such terrific items; To Tim, of LnL Enterprises, for moving our water heater and installing our utility sink (making our commercial kitchen uptacode at long last); And to Kim, Mark, Leila, Suhail, Linda, Marianne, Meredith and Bo, Paul, Janna and Michael, Ruthie, BJ, and Karen and Jay, for their generous support of this season’s Community Lunch and Supper programs; I hope that you too will stop and thank these friends and neighbors for, well, just for giving back to our small town. Happy holidays! See you at the Hall! Second, a thousand thanks to our tireless volunteers: To Binkie, our salt angel;

Community Matters: Zero Waste by Pam Curran

Have you ever considered what life without trash might look like? Bea Johnson, author of Zero Waste Home , and her husband, Scott, began a journey to sustainability in 2008 after learning how profoundly endangered our planet is and how everyday decision making was making matters worse. Together they tackled the “greening” of their home and adopted a unique measurement of success: How little trash were they producing? Being aware of how much trash our lifestyles create may begin as a straightforward measurement of how sustainably a family is living, but it quickly grows into a creativity booster. Finding a balance between life’s being green and life’s being easy is a component of making a zero-waste lifestyle fulfilling. Balancing the two goals while eliminating waste is potentially the most creative, artistic, and practical work of our time. When interest in reducing waste is piqued, it can quickly become a healthy obsession for the whole family. Learning what may work in your home and what doesn’t can also engender a deeper connection to your community. From Bea and Scott Johnson’s home, zero waste has grown into a movement that is being adopted and adapted by twenty somethings, families, businesses, industry, and yes, even municipalities across Europe as a large-scale waste- management solution. But back to your home. Zero waste does not mean more recycling; in fact, some zero-waste families have a goal of zero recycling. Sound impossible? Winnowing recyclables

can be a really fun family adventure. Want to try a few starters? Replace single-use plastics with durable alternatives: There are low-impact alternatives to every single-use plastic item, such as plastic bags, bottles, cups, lids, straws, and flatware. Reduce by evaluating patterns of past consumption : Assess the true use of, need for, and joy in everything in your home and let go of what is not used, needed, or bringing joy. Reuse by shopping with your own containers and asking for items without packaging: Bring your own jars when shopping for food from bulk containers. Everything from peanut butter to meat to olive oil is available without packaging. Eliminate buying packaged items as much as possible. Recycle what you cannot do without or reuse. Borrow, loan, trade, barter, or rent. Buy and sell used items, share items that sit unused for hours or days, and extend the life of necessities through repairing, rethinking their purpose, and returning. Great fashion and high quality can be found at thrift shops. Compost your yard waste and food waste. Even toothbrushes can be composted if they are made of wood and have natural bristles. Additional resources are available all over the internet and YouTube. Here are two classic sites: zerowastehome.com and trashisfortossers.com. Comments or questions about zero waste? Contact us at chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com.

Marty’s Memories: Serving Gratitude by Marty Trower

Late fall is a great time to remember. Not so much officially, as on Veteran’s Day or even Thanksgiving, but those in-between, unexpected times. Some days, something as stark as the skeletal outline of bare oak can pull you away, snag you, hold you. Somehow, the damp softness of the day keeps you there, musing. It’s the subtle things. My mother, pointing out that there really is a mauve color in that cluster of bare trees off in the distance. Training me to look, to notice.

My mother telling me, to counteract shyness on the ferry ride, to ask people about themselves. Teaching me the art of conversation. My mother breathing in on windy fall mornings and blowing out the words, “Oh, this is a perfect clothes-drying day!” Making me love doing laundry on fine, yet blustery days. Being reminded of the little things and being grateful for them, that’s what December on Chebeague does for me.

Wellness Matters: Prevention

Although Fran Calder has now moved to the mainland to live with daughter Laura, she asked us to publish the American Heart Association’s lists of warning signs of heart attack and stroke. Warning Signs of a Heart Attack Chest discomfort Pain or discomfort in other areas of the upper body, such as arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach Shortness of breath Breaking out in a cold sweat, lightheadedness, or nausea Warning Signs of a Stroke Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, particularly on one side of the body

Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding Sudden blindness or trouble seeing in one or both eyes Sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination Sudden, severe headache with no apparent cause Have a safe and happy holiday!

One Man’s Island by Bob Libby

The Julian calendar named December the tenth month and we now treat it as the twelfth month, but on this island, astronomically it is the first. The way the Earth tilts makes the seasons change, and around the third week of December the last solstice daylight recedes over Aaron’s Wharf in early afternoon. Our place on the planet turns away from the light for the year’s longest night. Living on Chebeague has made us acutely aware of night skies and the spinning of the planet while the ever-orbiting Earth teaches us daily about change. This mid November offered for view a Super Full Moon rising huge out of Casco Bay, so called because it was closer than it had been since 1948 and will not be this close again for decades. The tides responded, and fortunately, no storm surges drove high waves. Just extra steep ramps on low tides and higher floats at high tides reminded us of how the oceans rule. All the lobstermen had to adjust to the sea levels as they carried traps back to shore. This ritual reminds me of Louise Rich’s great painting “Winter Wall” and Sheila Jordan’s poem that celebrates it. Welcome to the Anthropocene of rising sea levels. Chatting with a young, seafaring father at the Green A while raking leaves, I lamented that when his children reach my age the Hook will be permanently under water, the rocks off Division Point will be another fathom below sea level, and the Stone Wharf— unless vastly rebuilt—will be gone. The report of the Casco Bay Watershed investigation on climate change a decade ago predicted the change in temperature and the resulting changes

in sea level, effect on seasons, riverine flooding, and increased winter and spring participation, concluding that only a reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions can slow the life-altering effects of climate change. Each day, standing in our front garden we observe the changing angles of the sun’s disappearance behind the near landmarks of Hussey Sound. Start the year with gorgeous sunsets over Division Point, by March’s vernal equinox the sunlight’s bright sky embers glow behind the spewing stack of Wyman Power Station. By the summer solstice in June, the sun disappears behind Moshier Island and the Royal and Harraseeket rivers. Geological climatologists predict that the melting of billion tons of Greenland ice will change the tilt of the Earth. Will that change the tilt we have relied on for so many centuries? When Henry Thoreau visited Maine and kept his journal of the North Woods, he could tell the date within a day or two by observing blooming flora. Now, all those patterns are changing. Migratory birds that used to fly south stay for the winter. Black-legged ticks thrive where they were once frozen out. Last month experts meeting in Augusta to discuss the special effects of acidification on the Gulf of Maine found considerable evidence that the Gulf will no longer support our traditional fisheries. Living here and being observant reveal the subtle changes of the Anthropocene. I wonder if we will be clever enough to survive.

Ferry and Bus Cancellation Notices

When adverse weather conditions force CTC to consider cancelling a ferry and/or bus trip, the company will make every effort to notify our customers as soon as possible. As soon as the decision is made, the information will be posted to the CTC’s website and Facebook page. An email will also be sent to Chebeague.org for posting. Emails and texts will be sent to those who registered on our web- site to receive notification. CTC intends to make the decision as soon as possible and post it at least 60 minutes before the sched- uled trip whenever possible.

Route One parking customers should park on Cousins Island if the bus has been cancelled but the ferry is still running. Vehicles should be returned to Route One as soon as possible. If the weather takes a sudden turn for the worse, CTC may be unable to observe the 60 minute rule when passenger and/or em- ployee safety is a concern. Holiday Treat Nostalgia Do your holiday memories include special treats such as ribbon candy, peppermint drops, or peach blossoms? How about those hard candies that had a design that looked almost like stained glass? Or what about a bowl of nuts that you cracked yourself? Long before citrus fruit was available year round, oranges were a special Christmas treat. As you prepare for the holidays, think about a contributing an old-fashioned treat to be included as part of the food pantry distribution. Donations can be dropped off at any time at the Parish House.
