Notes from the Chebeague Island Council
This summer has been exceptionally busy, and I could feel the collective sigh of relief with the arrival of the first day of fall. The Council was very pleased to have had a physician using the Wellness Center this summer, and many in the community found “convenient care”was exactly what they needed. Summer visitors, far from their primary care provider, said they were especially happy to find Dr. O’Donnell on the island. We are looking forward to his return next summer. So what is next? The Council is happy to announce that MaineHealth has offered to contract with the Council to provide nursing services starting in October. There will be a nurse available in the Wellness Center for blood draws, blood pressure checks, suture removal, health checks—and all the tasks that can be performed by a registered nurse! This service will be free, so don’t hesitate to stop in, no appointment needed. MaineHealth is excited to provide health care to the Chebeague community and is very open to expanding this service as needed. More hours and home visits are being considered. MaineHealth brings a wealth of resources to our community, and the Council is just beginning to explore the many health-related services that MaineHealth offers. Please stay tuned for the start date of this new service; we are aiming for mid October! In the meantime, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to learn more about this new program.
One of the highlights of the Council’s efforts this summer was the Drug Take Back Program. Way back last winter one of our board members brought this up as a need on the island. Working with the Sheriff’s Department, one Saturday morning in August, we collected 39.5 pounds of medication! That’s right, the Sheriff’s Department reported 39.5 pounds! This effort was coordinated with Long Island, which brought in 15.5 pounds. The Council received a very nice letter from the Sheriff’s Department, which felt this should become an annual event. Thank you to all who contributed and helped out. Winter is coming. The Council is offering free flu shots at the Hall Friday morning October 14 from 9:00 to 11:00. It is time to get the house ready for winter as well. Please call the Council if you have questions about finding help for winterization needs. And remember, if you are unable to pay for heating fuel please call Ester at 846-4178 for prompt, absolutely anonymous, assistance. Chedemption has had the busiest summer ever. Thank you to all the volunteers who keep this running so smoothly! Checks will be going out to all the participating nonprofits October 14. The Chebeague Island Council is working hard to support the efforts of everyone in the community to continue the traditions that make Chebeague the special place we all love. Thank you.

Wellness Matters: ’Tis the Season to Prevent Flu by Jenny Hackel
Remember the Ebola virus scare, when everyone was afraid that the virus would spread to the United States and they would die from it? Millions of dollars were spent to contain the virus, thus preventing an epidemic in this country. But every winter there is an epidemic of influenza, and many people do die from it—over 3,600 in the United States in 2013 ( http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr64/nvsr64_02.pdf ). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now lists influenza and pneumonia together as the eighth leading cause of death here. Worldwide, influenza virus sickens 25 percent of children and 10 percent of adults, especially those with chronic diseases and the elderly. Yet many Americans decline a flu shot, though the vaccine can be a powerful defense if we all use it. How does the virus invade our bodies? Exposure to a simple sneeze or a cough from an infected person will do. The viral particles expelled by sneezing may land on a doorknob or counter—or your face. When you touch that doorknob and then place your hand to your mouth or breathe in the particles, you welcome the virus into your body. Once there, the virus hijacks certain cells and takes over the controls, forcing your cells to make more copies of the virus. Once these copies are released into your system, the host cell is destroyed.
Flu vaccines work by exposing you to deactivated, or killed, virus, which enables your body to recognize the virus and build an army of defensive antibodies to fight it. Because there are several types of influenza virus, each year the vaccine formula changes slightly to reflect what scientists believe will be the most common strains causing illness. This means that some years the vaccine is very effective and other years, it doesn’t quite match the current viral mix. That is also why a person who has been vaccinated does not stay immune: the influenza virus is able to cause repeated epidemics because it undergoes clever genetic shifting. So the antibodies you built in the past no longer help you—you need new ones! If everyone over the age of six months were to get the vaccine as recommended by the CDC, many flu- related illnesses and deaths would be prevented. Ideally, you should get a flu shot in the autumn as it takes a few weeks to build immunity from the inactivated vaccine, and the epidemic is due to arrive in December. Don’t get the flu for Christmas! The Chebeague Island Council is holding a flu shot clinic on Friday October 14 from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the Hall through the Visiting Nurse Association. So
come get the vaccine: ’tis the season to help prevent the next epidemic.

Marty’s Memories: Anticipation by Marty Trower
Odd, to think of anticipation and memories at the same time, but October can do that to you. Think of the smells there are on the island during this month, and then when they come and you absorb them, I’ll bet you’ll be as full of anticipation as I am. I don’t dread the upcoming colder months. I see them as a chance to bask in all the nuances—those little things that Nature is using to slowly reveal her changes. Every act of weather is really a new, evolving canvas of experiences for the senses. I’m hoping you’re feeling all of this without my using more words.
We were coming to the cottage for a long weekend, the first since summer and the last before spring. We were coming across on the boat, and there were many boring closing-up chores ahead—most of them involving mice. I remember the sun breaking through the fog and bursts of autumn color spreading over us. The Stone Pier emerged, and all along its uneven surface you could see the people lined up. I saw their legs first, hanging over the edges of large granite slabs. The tide was low. Hunting jackets, colors muted by the mist, appeared next, then disappeared. Closer, and the silhouettes, the profiles—and, oh, the beards!
Here’s a Chebeague memory of October in the sixties:
The anticipation! Now I see the connection.

One Man’s Island by Bob Libby
October is the perfect time to explore Chebeague. Summer is over, and the falling leaves create romantic vistas down every meandering path; the autumn slants of sunlight enriched by ripening scents of wildflowers invigorate our spirits. Standing by our mailbox on the Roy Hill Road at the highest point in Casco Bay, looking to the eastern bay arched over by bright yellow coronas of trees never fails to thrill. Bright rugosa hips and tiny blooms of wild asters by the roads make us smile. All over the island autumn winds drop acorns and unharvested apples in many yards and paths. Now, between the September 11 call for a national day of service and Thanksgiving, October seems the perfect moment to reflect on the members of our community who selflessly act every day to improve our lives—the cooks who provide Wednesday coffees and luncheons at the Hall, the crew responsible
for the annual Harvest Dinner at the Commons, volunteers who spend hours in the school, and of course, the emergency first responders who get our family members to care when it is urgently needed. Just step up and say thank you to your neighbors when you notice conspicuous acts of kindness. Here’s a simple game to try. Take a hike or a ride around the island; touch each of the bronze plaques honoring many benefactors of the past who devoted their time to making Chebeague a better place. I count Lewis Ross, Betsy McColl, Bob Jones, and Mabel and Sanford Doughty as mentors and examples of those who knew how to benefit community. Here’s a hint: three of the plaques are on the Great Chebeague Golf Course. Check out the names from World War I in front of the Grange Hall or the names on the Toll of the Sea plaque at Chandler’s Cove. How many do you know?

Fall Hours — Island Homes: Chebeague’s Domestic Architecture, Settlement to 1890, this year’s new exhibit, has already attracted more than 2000 visits. Guests have been amazed by the high- quality photographs of the island’s oldest houses, some of which no longer exist. The exhibit will be open Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sundays 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. through Columbus Day weekend. Many thanks to the volunteers who mounted this excellent exhibit and to our visitors, who have been so enthusiastic about it. It will remain as our exhibit in the summer of 2017. The gift shop is open whenever the Museum is open. Watch for Special Sale Days in November and December.
Volunteers Welcome — Are you interested in helping to run the museum or gift shop? Writing for a historical journal about an island you love? Taking care of one of Chebeague’s historic buildings? Or discussing the history of the island with our many visitors? Your help is always welcome. For more information, contact President Toby Webb at tobywebb@verizon.net . Summer Employment Opportunity — Depending upon the post-college plans of our 2016 summer managers, the Museum may need a paid manager for the summer of 2017. Please pass this information along to any eligible candidate. Expressions of interest should be sent to Toby Webb.

The Recompense Fund
Partnerships in Action The Recompense Fund supports the formation of partnerships in action between our Chebeague nonprofits, which improve the quality of our lives on the island. It is your community fund, helping to fill those spaces that bring these partnerships together. This is why we always encourage everyone first to contribute to their favorite local nonprofits and then to Recompense. Here is an example of how these partnerships work. The Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust was concerned about damage to the delicate dune grass at Rose’s beach caused by kayakers and others storing their boats along the dune grass that rims the wetlands. This grass, once crushed, does not grow back, and its roots help maintain a protective barrier against erosion from storms.
The steward of the land trust, Allen Malony, proposed installing a kayak rack next to the easement and discussed with Paul Belesca at the Chebeague Island Boat Yard and Bob Earnest with the Sailing School the kind of rack and partnership that might work for kayakers. They came up with a solution, but no one had the funds to make it happen. The Land Trust then turned to the Recompense Fund with a proposal for the purchase and installation of the rack. Our Board was pleased to fund it in full. As you can see from the accompanying photo, at the end of the summer, kayaks neatly filled the rack and there was no sign of boats along the dune grass extending to Rose’s Point. Burn permits are still available for free through Ralph or Kim Munroe and Lisa Israel or online for a cost of $7 ($2 of which goes to the town) at www13.informe.org/burnpermit/public . As quite often happens this time of year, we are experiencing extremely high fire danger days. Please be aware and follow the rules before starting any fires. Sincerely, Barbara Hamilton Thank You Dear CTC crew and Rescue Doug, Martha, and Mike : My heartfelt thanks to each of you for your immediate suppertime response in getting me to the boat and to Cousins Island. I spent four days in the hospital and three weeks in rehab at Falmouth by the Sea. Thank you all for your great caring and quick response. Sincerely, Barbara Hamilton Thank You Everyone
Thank You Chebeague Fire and Rescue! We are grateful to Chebeague Fire and Rescue for their speedy response when our commercial dishwasher sparked a fire in the wee hours of the morning on September 3! Just a week earlier Ralph Munroe conducted annual Fire and Safety training for Commons staff. CRMA Sherry Ballou, on duty overnight, followed the guidelines to a tee, safely evacuating all our residents and then grabbing a fire extinguisher to douse the flames before the fire had a chance to spread. Kudos to Ralph for the great training, and to Sherry for her perfect response the night of the fire! The manufacturer sent us a replacement unit, which Jon Rich and Stephen Todd installed, so we are back to normal in the kitchen. Many, many thanks to all for saving the day! From the Island Commons Board and all the staff A Heartfelt Thank You Falling down the stairs at 3:00 a.m. is pretty terrifying. To all the volunteers who came to my rescue—a heartfelt thank you. Fortunately, no broken bones. We are so lucky to have this great rescue team and caring community. With gratitude, Molly O’Donnell Notes from the Chebeague Parents’ Association A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. Chebeague Island School News: Full Circle
BIRTHS September 1: Krista Genevieve Lowe, a daughter, to Whitney and Will Lowe Her favorite place on the island is the Nubble at Bennetts Cove. She loves spending time there with her family and friends, especially for cookouts and picnics, where her love of cooking can really shine. “I need dry socks.”“I need a Band-Aid.”“Can you call my mom?” These are probably not the questions one typically hears at work, but then Meredith Beaupre is in not your typical job. As the new administrative secretary for the Chebeague Island School, Meredith does it all, and like her predecessor, juggles her many hats with patience and good humor. Many of us know Meredith as the business manager for Chebeague Sand & Gravel, the past president of the CPA, past board member of the Rec Center, and a C.R.M.A. at the Commons. And most of us know her husband, Bo, as well as their three children. Although she and her family recently finished building a home on the island, Meredith has deep roots in the community. Her family has always had a summer place on Chebeague, and she moved here for good at the age of three!
Meredith is a great addition to the staff and is excited to be working at the school she once attended. It seems she has now come full circle. Meredith is in the school office from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can reach her at 846-4162 or cissecretary@ chebeague.net. The next time you are at the school, stop in and say hello. She can probably find you some dry socks….
DEATHS September 3: James Brewster, 59
