On the Cover The Chebeague Island Historical Society was founded in 1984 and has become a vibrant and integral part of the Chebeague community. The Society strives to help folks appreciate the island’s heritage so they may better understand the place we live in today as we plan for the future. The Society acquired the District 9 School House in 1998, which was in disrepair after being used as the Town Garage for 45 years. The building now houses state of the art storage; exhibit space; a 15,000-piece photo collection; and a research/meeting room. More than 2500 people visit the facility annually, and membership exceeds 400. In addition to being a community resource, the CIHS presents well-researched exhibits, programs, and house tours and publishes the Sloop’s Log twice a year. About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. Available on-line at Chebeague Island News ( www.chebeague.org ) or www.islandcalendar.weebly.com and mailed to every occupied residence on the island, for a small additional fee, it can also be delivered by first-class mail to Island Council members who are off island at the time of publication. The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submission is noon on the 20 th day of the month preceding publication. Submissions and ad copy may be mailed (P.O. Box 12), left at the Council offce (247 South Rd.), or emailed ( chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com ) and sent as attachments (.doc; no pdfs) or included in the body of the text. Images and photographs should be sent in a .jpg, .jpeg, or .rtf format. As a courtesy and space permitting, island nonprofts are given a free half page each month to publish their news. Any such submissions exceeding a half page will be charged at the usual rate. All submissions become the property of the Chebeague Island Council, which reserves the right to edit them for length and clarity. Submissions that are not time sensitive may be held until there is suffcient space to publish them. Additional information about submissions is available at www.islandcalendar.weebly.com . Advertising rates are as follows: full page, $60; 1/2 page, $30; 1/4 page, $15; 4-line classified, $5; 6- to 8-line classified, $10. Garden Matters: Invasive Plants by Erno Bonebakker

Mary Holman’s article in the June Calendar described the potential human health issues caused by ticks. In this article we will discuss another aspect of the tick problem, the exotic and invasive plants that contribute to the explosion of the tick population on Chebeague. A small portion of the exotic plants that we humans have imported from other places for their agricultural or decorative value, or by mistake, become invasive pests. Some we call weeds, but others cause less apparent but nevertheless signifcant problems. Offcially, an invasive plant is defned as an exotic (from away) that is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or be harmful to humans. A characteristic of troublesome invasive plants is that they spread rapidly once established and outcompete the existing native plant species. In the Casco Bay region, some of the most widespread and troublesome invasive plants are Oriental bittersweet, Japanese barberry, bush honeysuckles, common reed, and black swallow wort. Each of these species is troublesome for a unique reason. Many additional species are considered invasive, and more are expected to arrive as our climate changes. In addition, some species such as crown vetch are invasive in particular situations, although not considered a regional problem. Roughly two thirds of invasive plant species were purposely introduced, while the remainder arrived by accident. For example, the European strain of common reed was introduced accidentally through its use as a packing material for shipments from Europe during the nineteenth century. It has since spread—to the detriment of the less aggressive native strain. The big problem with Japanese barberry is that it hosts ticks that carry Lyme and other diseases. Research Laboratory has shown that Japanese barberry and bush honeysuckles offer an enhanced habitat for ticks and the small mammals that host tick nymphs. This impact on human health creates an additional reason to manage the spread of invasive plants on our island landscape, not only for the sake of the native habitat but also to improve the health of our human population. Black swallow wort, on the other hand, endangers the beloved monarch butterfly. Swallow wort, a native of southern Europe and a member of the milkweed family, is mistaken by monarchs for common milkweed, the sole plant on which monarchs lay eggs and their caterpillars feed. In addition to overwhelming native plants once it is established, swallow wort is poisonous to monarch caterpillars. Its wind-dispersed seeds make it an especially worrisome threat and, thus, an important one to manage aggressively when frst detected. Oriental bittersweet is a fast-growing perennial vine that can overwhelm and kill large trees, as it has done on Little Chebeague. Clipping the vines can keep it in check. It is so widely distributed in our region that it cannot be permanently eradicated, since birds tend to eat the seeds, get indigestion because of their exotic nature, and quickly drop them on nearby land. Japanese knotweed must be disposed of with care, as the root fragments easily resprout. Cuttings and roots are best placed in the garbage compactor, where they will eventually be burned (for energy), rather than dropped in the brush dump, where they may be recycled, spreading this pest to new sites. We are burdened with the often innocent mistakes of our ancestors in the case of invasive plants, but doing our best to practice good stewardship today will hopefully leave Chebeague a healthier and more vibrant place for our descendants. Paper Streets —This summer, the Board of Selectmen will hold a series of seven public hearings for the various subdivisions containing paper streets (46). The property owners who abut the paper streets will be formally invited. The streets will be evaluated for potential benefits, feasibility, financial impact, and legal considerations before appropriate options are determined. The voters of Chebeague Island will have the final say in the disposition

August is the month of boats swarming around Chebeague Island. If one spends any time this month on our island, one will be surrounded by boats. No more romantic image exists than the vision of white sails on the limitless blue horizon. Explore the beaches or picnic on Rose’s Point or Deer Point. Listen to the steady pulse of lobster boats tending traps just off shore. Barges and ferries arrive and depart overloaded with passengers and all the necessities of modern society. Water taxis fetch technicians to service the high-tech connections we all rely on. Have you ever explained to customer service that the repair van can’t just drive here? Making the turn on the John Small Road, one is confronted by the new industry of the boat yard, a bustling marina serving boaters from all over Casco Bay. Fortunately, the sailing club still thrives and young people are learning to sail and venture out onto the

Wellness Matters: The Healing Power of Pets by Jenny Hackel

As summer unfolds and our new “rescue kitty,” Maggie, enjoys exploring the outdoors, I am reminded of both the joys and the responsibilities of having a pet. Although I am forever grateful to the person who rescued Maggie from the streets of Boston in the freezing cold of January, I recently realized that Maggie also rescued me from depression and stress-related anxiety this winter. For, while our pets need us to care for them, we also need them for the wealth of good they do us. We all know that pets provide companionship to humans. That bond can be so strong that many pets have earned full status as family members. This connection goes back to ancient times, where in some cultures, pets were buried alongside humans. Did you know that because countless people refused to leave their pets behind during Hurricane Katrina, Congress passed the Pets Evacuation and Transport Standards Act, allowing federal agencies to create emergency animal shelters in natural disasters? As a nurse practitioner who is always interested in the ways in which alternatives to traditional Western medicine (mostly pharmaceuticals and surgery) can promote health and battle disease, I was fascinated to read about the many health benefits of having a pet. First of all, children who grow up with pets are less likely to have asthma and allergies. And caring for a pet is a great way to teach children responsibility, while also building their self-confidence by having a companion that gives them unconditional love, trust, and respect. Researchers looking into the specific reasons for such benefits have found that interacting with your dog increases your levels of oxytocin and dopamine—hormones involved in social connections—and decreases levels of cortisol, a potent stress hormone. No wonder scientists have found that having a pet can lower blood pressure as well as some

pills do. And going out to walk your dog is a good way to get more exercise and develop cardiovascular endurance. Finally, having a pet teaches us about death and dying as a natural part of the life cycle. Service dogs were once used only to help deaf or blind persons, but now they are trained to aid people with a much broader list of physical ailments. Dogs can be taught to sense when an epileptic child is going to have a seizure, enabling better protection. Service animals also improve the functional levels of people with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and muscular dystrophy. For instance, horseback riding can increase disabled riders’ control over limb spasticity or leg weakness, and the bond formed with the animal exponentially increases their experiences of joy in a world so full of limitations. As Alzheimer’s disease progresses and those affected become disoriented and easily upset, reasoning with them can be futile, but focusing their attention on a pet can be calming and replace their agitation with happiness. New research is shedding light on how similar outcomes are seen when specially trained pets are paired with people affected by chronic pain, drug addiction, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, attention deficit–hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities, and autism. Marty’s Memories: Aging and Change by Marty Trower

I’m realizing that aging and change are both slow processes. What surprises me is how my own outlook on change is so different nowadays. Is that part of aging? Some changes I’m noticing on the island might be so subtle that recent visitors may not be aware of them. One has to do with property boundaries. It used to be (and I’m remembering the East End part of the island of my youth) that we crisscrossed, barefoot of course, woods, fields, paths, and lanes without a thought that we were disturbing others or trespassing. There was always visiting and banter. We knew everyone. I don’t remember when this friendly ritual changed because it has been so gradual—and, it is still around, for the most part. Just different. We used to swim and play at the shore, rocky and sandy, in the coldest water imaginable, and love it. Today, kids mostly choose the heated pool and organized activities, and love it. But they also visit the beach and create and leave the most imaginative works of art. This tells me they are truly experiencing the island. Today, we—young and old—are still making our memories here. And loving it. Breathing in “that Chebeague Air,” stopping to savor it, and sharing it with others. That’s not going to change. It changes us, though, stays with us through the ages and binds us together.

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC? A Reminder on Some CTC Policies Weekday Worker Passes at Cousins are valid Monday - Friday from 6 AM to 7PM only. Passes are not valid on weekends except for local lobstermen. Workers with this pass who use the Cousins Lot on weekends are subject to availability and a $20 daily fee. The Town of Yarmouth has 15 designated spaces at the Cousins Island Lot - per the 2008 agreement between Yarmouth and Chebeague. Ten passes are annual parking permits issued by lottery by the Town of Yarmouth. The other five passes are daily passes issued on a first come - first serve basis. Day Passes are for same day or next day return only. Multiple passes to extend the visit for several days are not allowed. Day passes are not valid at the Cousins Island lot. We would like to remind our customers of CTC policies regarding transporting commercial freight on the ferry.  Freight should be delivered by the 12:15 PM ferry  Freight should not be delivered by dual wheel vehicles  Customers who are not on the ferry must notify CTC of the deliv- ery in advance  All unaccompanied freight must display customer’s name  Freight must be picked up at the ferry directly after the boat re- turns to Chebeague  Freight fees must be paid upon delivery to Chebeague. Daily parking at Cousins Island is based on availability. CTC needs to reserve five day spaces for Yarmouth residents. Beyond that, access to the lot is purely on a first come - first serve basis. Overnight parking at the Cousins Island lot is allowed only for persons holding a regular annual parking permit. CTC management reserves the right to make exceptions as it deems appropriate. COMMERCIAL FREIGHT POLICIES

Congestion on the Wharf at Cousins Island Summer months are busy on the Island, and especially busy on the Cousins Island wharf as CTC buses and other vehicles load and unload passengers and freight for the ferry. By Town of Yarmouth ordinance, vehicular traffic on the wharf is prohibited from Friday afternoon to Monday morning during the sum- mer. CTC has ordered more carts and is keeping a supply at the Cousins lot for our customers’ use in transporting freight. If you are walking to the lot and there are many carts on the wharf, please take one to the lot with you. Here are some other suggestions to help:  Wait for passengers in the CTC parking lot.  If possible, drop passengers in the parking lot instead of on the wharf.  Don’t drive down to the wharf to leave freight if you can carry it from the parking lot.  Don’t back up the hill. Turn around at the bottom.

The Recompense Fund

An Island Fund Working with Chebeague Nonprofits: $44,000 for 10 New Grants

The Recompense Fund’s frst grant of 2016 goes to beneft all our Chebeague nonprofts. It is for the I Lead Nonprofts for Chebeague. The details are given below. This July, the Recompense Board also reviewed nine new applications from Chebeague nonprofts and agreed to fund all of them, in part or in full. Come fnd out about them on August 25 at the School from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Our community oven will

be serving the best pizza in Casco Bay. Bring family and friends to hear about how donations from our community are helping to raise all boats. Neighbors and friends of Chebeague from near and far, after contributing to their favorite Chebeague nonprofts, turned to the fund to help sustain the island as a vibrant year-round community. Many thanks to all.

I LEAD Nonprofits for Chebeague Island Leadership Exploration and Development for Nonprofits What is I LEAD Nonprofits for Chebeague? I LEAD is a full day of leadership support for nonprofit leaders and board members from Chebeague Island. The program is designed to bring Chebeague community members together to develop leadership and business management skills and create a professional network of nonprofit leaders. The program will strengthen skills necessary to manage a successful nonprofit such as • Articulation of organizational mission, vision, and values • Fundraising and grant application strategies

• Meeting facilitation training • Strategic planning training • Board recruitment and development • Creating a sustainable budget and endowment

What are the training dates and time commitments? I LEAD runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 1 at the Niblic.

Who should attend and how much does it cost? This training is designed for directors, officers, and board members of Chebeague nonprofit organizations. This program is free to participants and is sponsored by The Recompense Fund in partnership with the Island Institute. How do I register? Chebeague Island Council Annual Meeting The Chebeague Island Council will hold its Annual Meeting on August 13 at 9:00 a.m. at the Parish House. Members are encouraged to attend. Alcoholics Anonymous The Chebeague Island Group of Alcoholics Anonymous will meet on Saturday mornings at 8:00 a.m. starting Saturday, June 18, 2016 , and continuing through Labor Day weekend. We meet at the Chebeague Island Library, which is part of the Community Center. Please park in the library parking lot and use the back door. For more information, call 914-980-6107 . Mass Father Dan Greenleaf from Sacred Heart in Yarmouth and Holy Martyrs in Falmouth will be on the Island to celebrate Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 20 th . Chebeague Island Historical Society Exhibit The current exhibit examines Chebeague’s architectural heritage from settlement in the 1700s to 1890 and includes over 200 photographs. The Museum is open from 1 0:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays in August and on weekends after Labor Day until Columbus Day.
