About the Calendar T he Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. It is available on-line at Chebeague Island News (www.chebeague.org) or www. chebeagueislandcalendar.com and delivered to every active mail box on the island. The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submissions is noon on the 20 th day of the month preceding publication. Submissions and ad copy may be mailed (247 South Road), left at the Council office (on 247 South Road) or emailed (chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com) and sent as attachments (.doc; no pdfs) or included in the body of the text. Images and photographs should be sent in a .jpg, .jpeg, or .rtf format. Please do not use the old email address at as this is an inactive account. As a courtesy and space permitting, island nonprofits are given up to a free half page each month to publish their news. Any such submissions exceeding a half page will be charged at the usual rate. All submissions become the property of the Chebeague Island Council, which reserves the right to edit them for length and clarity. Submissions that are not time sensitive may be held until there is enough space to publish them. Additional information about submissions is available at www.chebeagueislandcalendar.com. A s Co-Presidents of the Chebeague Island Hall Community Center, Gina and I would like to thank all those who made our inaugural Art Walk and Painted Bench Auction such a success.

Second, we were delighted to host a variety of artists from numerous disciplines. Their art work transformed the normally bare walls of the Hall. Third, we are grateful to Tanner Foley, Rachel Libby, and Violette Theobald for prepping and serving all the food and making sure the art work was hung properly, and to Trish for staying to clean everything up.

School Cancellations and the CTC Bus

During the school year, if both the Chebeague Island and Yarmouth schools are closed, the CTC bus will not operate for the 6:30 a.m./6:45 a.m. ferry. On school cancellation days, please make alternate transportation arrangements for those morning departures.

Have you noticed our crew taking photos of freight? It's part of a new process to help the office identify freight and process charges more efficiently. The crew will ask who owns the freight, take a quick photo, and the office will usually process the freight charges afterward. If you prefer, you're also welcome to pay on the ferry, stop by the office, or pay in advance over the phone at (207) 846 3700. CTC charges freight fees for commercial deliveries and personal bulk items. Our crew is not responsible for loading heavy items, construction materials, or landscaping supplies such as mulch. Please remember that gasoline may not be transported on the bus or ferry.

August 4, 2026 -- The Board of Directors of the Island Commons is pleased to announce that Dennis Johnson will assume the newly created position of Executive Director of the Island Commons on October 1, 2026. He will replace current administrator, Amy Rich, who has led the Commons since 2011 and earlier this year expressed a desire to step down from the job once a replacement is ready. The board also is pleased to announce that Christina Phipps will assume a new position, Resident Care Director, expanding her current role as manager of residential care. Christina will oversee care delivery services for residents, clients served by the Commons’ in-home care service, Chebeague Cares, and adult day care and respite care. Phipps will assume her new duties immediately. The Island Commons is a seven-bed residential care facility licensed by the State of Maine. Since opening in 1999, it has provided care for more than 150 elders, allowing islanders to remain in their community when they can no longer live independently. Johnson, who grew up on Chebeague and retains close ties with the island, is a graduate of Springfield College and holds an MBA in public administration and nonprofit management. He currently works for Lewiston Housing Associates in Lewiston, Maine. He has served on the Island Commons Board of Directors for three years and is currently the board’s vice-president. Phipps joined the Commons’ caregiving team in 2013 and became resident care manager in 2019. She currently directs day-to-day operations, manages regulatory compliance and oversees a team of 20 full- and part-time caregivers. Her compassion and commitment to eldercare have made her an invaluable member of the Commons’ team as well as the Chebeague community. “The leadership and dedication that Amy Rich has provided to the Commons over the years leaves giant shoes to fill,” said Susan Stranahan, president of the Commons board. “We believe Dennis Johnson, with his leadership skills as well as knowledge of, and strong ties to Chebeague, will carry the Commons forward in its mission in coming years. Christina Phipps’ dedication as a care team leader will build on the capacity of the Commons to serve the Chebeague community now and in the future. Pharmacy personnel will be here to give Flu and Covid shots on Wednesday Sept 16th 9-11:30 at the Hall. This is a Walk-In Clinic and there are no scheduled appointments. They will have both types of Flu vaccine. We do not know yet what brand of Covid vaccine will be provided, Consent and insurance information forms are available at the Library, Town Hall, and Council office. Please bring your completed forms with you. If you do not have insurance please indicate that on the form. Vaccines will be paid for by the Council. No one should be unvaccinated due to cost. Being vaccinated helps protect your friends and neighbors as well as yourself.

2026 Recompense Fund Grants

Chebeague Community Church: $20,075 to help close the annual operating budget gap, support administrative and bookkeeping functions and increase the capacity of the 24/7, no-barrier food access via the Chebeague Community Kitchen. There is “extraordinary work happening across this island,” said Chapl Victor Diaz. Reflecting on the past grant supporting music at the church, Diaz said that music “opens hearts … and creates space for reflection. Chebeague-Cumberland Land Trust: $4,000 for new signage in protected natural and wildlife places on Chebeague to improve the visiting experience for all. In its 39 years, CCLT has preserved 13 Chebeague Island parcels, as well as Stockman, Ministerial and Basket islands, said board member George Bates, whose father, Blanchard, was a founding member. Chebeague Island Commons: $22,000 toward the transportation costs of off-island caretaking employees in order to provide sustainable and consistent care. “The shortage of care across Maine is beyond critical,” said board President Susan Stranahan, and easing travel expenses helps attract and keep staff. “Spread the word: The Commons is a terrific place to work.” Chebeague Island Historical Society: $17,927 toward the long-term preservation of the CIHS collection with support for improvements in technology for the control of humidity and temperature in the historical building. The historical society, which had 2,500 visitors in 2025, is looking to develop an online presence and in creating comfortable work spaces, said Michael Porter, board president. Chebeague Island Hall Community Center: $2,440 for capital improvements, specifically for funding for an electrical engineer to assess the Hall’s electrical infrastructure and provide a recommendation and electrical design. The work was “desperately, desperately needed” to help keep pace with the increased use of the building, said board member Gina Ross.

Chebeague Island Hall Community Center: $600 to attract and retain a professional veterinarian for the monthly, on-island veterinary clinic with transportation funding to cover parking on the mainland Chebeague Island Library: $18,000 to contribute to the 2026 building expansion and launch of the Workspace Addition to provide the community free, accessible, modern spaces for remote workers, businesses, students and all island visitors. Board President Pips Veazey, who reflected on a busy three years leading up to a workspace addition, said the library is now considering “who we are today … and who we want to be in the future.” Chebeague Island Recreation Center/Kids’ Place: $10,000 to enhance emergency preparedness with funding for generators. Past grants have often gone to equipment at both buildings, and “my goal was to be the fittest island in Casco Bay,” said Executive Director Bill McKenzie. With generators, now the buildings can also be reliably open, and CRC can be available to the community in the event of power outages and other crises. Chebeague Transportation Company: $8,958 towards increased safety and emergency preparedness with support for a state-of-the art man-overboard recovery system. “Thanks, Recompense, for the gift we hope we never have to use,” said board President Susan Stranahan. MacBeth Concert Series, through Chebeague Community Island Association (CICA): $11,000 toward production costs of “The Sound of Music,” a full-cast staging coming in August 2027. MacBeth “smashed attendance records” in 2025, said Carl Tubbesing, thanking the “incredibly generous community.” Additionally, Recompense awarded three small grants of $500 each to The Whalers, the MacBeth Music Series, and to the Chebeague Island School.
