Stay the Trail Why Staying On Marked Snowmobile Trails Protects the Future of Maine’s Snowmobiling The Volunteer Perspective

“T he trail system isn’t magic,” says Lou Annance, president of the Bog Hooters Snowmobile Club. “We spend months planning, brushing, sign ing, and grooming. We work with landowners one at a time, often over coffee at their kitchen table. When someone rides through a pasture or cuts across their driveway at 10 PM, that relationship shatters. And when we lose a landowner, we lose miles of T he future of snowmobiling in Maine depends on each one of us. Here’s how you can help: • Stay on marked trails . When in doubt, stop and check signage or consult a map. • Respect trail closures. If a gate is closed or a sign says “Do Not Enter,” obey it—regardless of snow conditions. S nowmobiling is more than recreation—it’s a tra dition that connects communities, supports local economies, and fosters stewardship of Maine’s win ter landscape. But that tradition won’t survive with out collective responsibility. Every time you stay on the trail, you honor the hard work of volunteers, protect landowner relationships,
