gestures only thank you.) Club news for November - Once again the potluck was scrumptious! It’s my favor ite evening… I love to try my new dishes on unsuspecting members. There were a lot of great dishes presented and desserts were scrumptious. If you don’t come to the monthly meeting, please take time out and come. We love the company and the conversation and the business generally is handled quite simply. I would like to remind everyone that the Rockabema Snow Rangers 50/50 Raffle has begun. The prizes are: first draw $3,000.00, second draw is $1500.00, and final draw will be $500.00. The tickets are $50.00 apiece and it benefits a great club working to keep your trails open. You can get your ticket by mailing your check to me, purchase on the Rockabema webpage, or find a member. The drawing will be held in February 2026. We are changing up the SPONSOR A MILE - We have a few businesses who have pur chased the SPONSOR A MILE sign, but we are beginning a new strategy to reduce the amount of obstacles on the trails. We will be posting a new bulletin board that will house our businesses’ information and guarantee a great visual presentation that is appropriate for our trails. The up and coming signage will be $100.00 for a place on the two bulletin boards placed on the trail. Please contact me, Carilynn Hanson – 203-687-6403 - to sponsor a mile for your business. If your sign was out there, watch for an invoice coming from me. You may not think this advertisement benefits your income, but the number of sledders look ing for a great place to eat or rest is right on the trail. The first drawing occurred for our monthly club drawing. Watch your mail for a check if you happened to win. As I sit and write this, there are a few inches of white gold laying on the ground. We can only hope and pray that much more snow will come quickly and stay for several more months. Plans have been drawn up for a possible groomer garage/ club house. All grant applica tions have been submitted and we sit and pray that we receive great news. Several of our members have been out brush cutting and signing our trail system. We have just finished the ground work on the re-route of the 120 Connector to Eagle Lake and are currently waiting to hear from our large landowners to inform us of their winter logging plans in order to finish the signage. The border crossing into Pohe ganamok will be different this winter, however crossing INTO the US through Escourt will be the same as in the past. Please follow us on Face book for information. Hopefully, our trails will be open and groomed when I sit and write our next newsletter. Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving! PORTAGE LAKERS sc Portage Lake, ME Winter 2025-2026: We Believe. We Hope. We Pray… for More Than Two Inches. Winter is finally upon us, and—believe it or not—the snow is actually sticking! Please join us in a collective snow dance, snow prayer, snow chant, or snow-based interpretive dance routine to guarantee we get more white stuff than the last few years. (Low bar, we know.) While you’re warming up your snow legs, remember: Ride safe, ride smart, and try not to become a YouTube sensation for the wrong reasons. Stay on marked trails, keep speeds rea sonable, and watch out for wildlife—especially those moose who look at you like you’re the one in the wrong neighborhood. Town Christmas Party – Dec. 21 st , Noon–3 PM, Town Hall Who doesn’t love a good potluck plus the thrill of a $20-limit Yankee Swap? Will you go home with a scented candle, a novelty mug, or a singing fish plaque someone has been trying to unload since 1998? Only destiny knows. Bring a dish to share and celebrate the season with your neigh bors and the Lakers. Santa will be there, too! Parents, please bring an age-appropriate gift so your kids can participate. (No, Kevin, a chainsaw is not “age-appropriate.”) Groomer News Glenn has been wrenching away in the groomer shed getting both machines trail-ready. The moment we have enough snow to justify their existence, those beauties will be rolling. Remem ber: smooth trails come from volunteers—not magic elves—so give Glenn a thumbs-up or a coffee if you see him. Hi Folks, I know it’s been a while since we have had a letter in the paper so I thought I would put a little update in. So, volunteers have been doing some trail work this Fall to get ready for snow. Most trails are pretty much marked and we just need enough snow to start grooming. Unfortunately, it is looking like our Number 9 Lake trail will be closed again this season due to logging. A change in the wood market could alter this but right now 7 Islands plans to do some cutting in that area. Our November meeting had some young new faces there. They had some ideas for doing a sup per and ways to get younger people interested in joining us. They were given the go ahead to make some plans for a supper to be held the 5th of December. We are looking forward to how their plans work out. We are looking at getting a new groomer this season. We have been awarded an USDA grant to help with it. However as we started the second phase of the grant process, the US Government went on shutdown. So, for right now we are in a holding pattern until the shutdown is resolved and we hear back if the funding for the grant has been affected. It is with sadness that I report past President Denis Gagne passed away a while ago. Denis helped the club years ago when there was some conflict within the club and he stepped up to be President. He helped get the club through a rough patch and many appreciated. He led our pizza fundraiser events. He and some others made a good tasting pizza and did them pretty quick. Well hope this finds you all well and doing the SNOW dance. Nick Bailey - Director and wearer of many hats. Dear Snowmobilers, It’s crunch time now for any late summer/fall projects and I can tell you that our members have been super busy. We are still finishing up a lit tle rerouting of trail #105 north near Rte 163, on the Mapleton Rd./Sleepy Hollow area. Our crew has done so much! Trail #74 from the Carvell Rd. east to the Presque Isle Stream has been totally redone. The trail was ditched, widened, culverts installed and the surface was graded. The work was done with our club mini excavator and bull dozer and many pairs of hands. Our grooming crew worked very hard. Great work guys! The work was continued on Trail #74 between the Grendell Rd. and the West Chapman Rd. We had to remove a large beaver dam. Also, 2 (yes that’s two!) large bridges were built. The first was on Trail #74 on the “Scopan Trail” near the railroad tracks. This was known as “Buster’s Bridge” named after Vinal “Buster” McPherson. Buster made the first trail to Scopan Lake and it is one of our most used trails. It took 3 full days, not including the planning, predrill ing the steel I-beams and planking and getting all of the materials and equipment in place. We also decided to replace the Dudley Brook Bridge on Trail 81A, at the location of the ATV picnic area. We were not sure if we could get that done before winter. Both bridges are on trails that are ATV and snowmobile trails and with the help of the Mapleton ATV Club we completed both bridges. We’ve received many compliments, so we encourage you to go take a look. People have expressed much surprise when we have told them it was a collaborative effort. Our directors and equipment operators con tinue to meet Wednesday nights at 6:00 in the “Bulllpen” (next to the clubhouse) to work on equipment and plan any needed trail work. Please feel free to join them! We are moving to a limited meeting schedule and will notify mem bers about our potential Christmas party. Meet ing dates will be decided by the directors. Any suggestions/ideas for meetings or other activities will be gladly accepted. Call Sue at 764-1236 or email at sue.maynard1236@gmail.com. ST. FRANCIS SNO ANGELS St. Francis, ME
November 16 th today and a snowy Sunday morning it is! The weather forecast, depend ing on which one you listen to announces 4 to 6 inches of snow. I remember long before we looked at our phones to access the weather, nature would tell us what to expect today. The animals knew snow was coming and we saw increased feeding traffic from the deer and the moose who could sense they had to eat today and take it easy tomorrow. I even had a visit from a regal white tailed deer munching on pumpkins left over from the fall decorations. The water in the river and brooks had swollen in anticipation of the coming precipitation and the most accurate weather forecaster of all, a fir branch I have hung on my porch had hung its head in acknowledgement. Will it stay? Time will tell. January, February, March will certainly bring some snow that will remain and we’ll be ready. Jeff has signed all the trails and we are awaiting our white carpet of snow to cover the branches and unforgiving ground. The groomer is serviced and ready and raring. I bet if I asked Vic, our trailmaster, he would say that maybe, just maybe, it starts itself up late at night and purrs as it comes to life for just a few minutes. It’s ready too! The lodge has had its fall cleaning and we are ready to make a wood fire and welcome you all to our warm rest and entertainment stop. We have several things already planned. On Saturday, February 21st, we will hold our 3rd annual Pig Roast. Brandon and Brittany Lane and Em and Lucas too! of Allagash Guide Service, do an amazing job helping us out with this. Last year we served almost 150 people and every one left with a full belly and lots of warm memories. We also have our first annual BBQ Rib Saturday planned. More details to follow! Erwin will begin opening the lodge on Friday evenings any time after Thanksgiving for our weekly pool tournament. We will open around New Years on Saturdays with our weekly hot meals! We are fortunate to have so many won derful cooks who help us out each week, I’m sure you’ve met a few of them. Watch our facebook page for updates! We have begun our membership drive and would love to be able to count each and every one of you as our supporters. You can join right on our Facebook page. We renovated our lodge last year and those of you that have visited it have seen what a comfy, cozy, clean and updated lodge we have. Those of you who have not visited have to make the trip to come visit. We are located right on ITS 92 and accessible by road as well about 2 miles after Joe’s Country Store. We truly are one of the last frontiers! We still have endless miles of trails, woods and waters, millions of stars, go ahead and count them and occasionally wild life that allows us to coexist with them. Be cautious of them and remember this was their world before we came along! Respectfully yours, Kim M Ouellette Secretary St. Francis Sno Angels. St. Francis, Maine We Got SNOW!!!… How exciting is that? It’s looking like we might get a white winter after all. I have been watching vehicles driving around with snow mobiles on their tailgate reminding us that the season is soon upon us. Club machinery is being tuned up and liquid levels checked preparing for the season ahead. Most impor tantly, have fun, but remember to always be safe. Maintain the rules of the trails and be respectful to others heading toward you and following behind you. If you aren’t sure about the hand signals on the trail, brush up so that everyone is on the same page (appropriate ROCKABEMA SNOW RANGERS Patten, ME
