Discovering the Eastern Region: Your Next Maine Snowmobile Adventure
O f the ve regions in the state the Eastern Region consists of seventy- ve clubs and covers all of Pis cataquis, Penobscot, Washington, and Hancock counties. This means there are clubs from Shin Pond/ Matagamon area over to Millinocket area and Greenville/Rockwood down past Dexter and Dover to Newport north to Bangor area and then Downeast past Bucksport and Ellsworth to the Canadian border in Calais and back up past Princeton and Grand Lake Stream to Spring eld in this region. As you can see it covers a large portion of the state and has many snowmobile destination spots when the conditions are right. Not all the areas in this region receive snowfall amounts like the Northern and Western regions do, but the Eastern Region clubs are always ready for snow and groom the trails as soon as they are able. Most anyone who snowmobiles in Maine will recognize and tell you about their rides in the Medway, Millinocket, Jo-Mary, Ebeemee areas or Shin Pond /Matagamon, or the Greenville /Rockwood areas because these are the areas that usually receive the most snow and have a lon ger riding season. This means the clubs in those areas are working constantly to keep their trails in riding condi
tions. The scenery in these areas is mostly snow-covered mountains and lakes, which make for spectacular riding and photo opportunities. If you enjoy miles of trails in the wilderness with chances to see wildlife along the way, then you have probably been on these trails. Have you considered a different area of the Eastern Region with a diverse type of riding? If so, why not look at a new area? Hop off I-95 in Newport and head towards Dexter. Not far out of Newport there is a park and ride that has direct access to the ITS rail /trail. You can ride from Newport to Dover then continue to Greenville and Rockwood or go east towards Brownville and continue to Jo-Mary and any other destination you choose. Along the way you will also encounter Maine wildlife and you pass through many towns. Off the ITS trail are numerous club trails that will let you explore other areas. The club trails may be narrower as they wind through the woods but you will nd some great photo opportunities. There are many places to stop for gas and food in either direc tion, so no worries there. Again, the clubs in these areas are out keeping trails maintained and signed so you can access services.
