THANK YOU!
The Council and the Chebeague Community send a heartfelt Thank You to the Ultimate Frisbee folks for an other successful Pancake Breakfast! Working with the Council volunteers, Craig Oster and his team kept the pancakes and bacon coming! All the proceeds go to the Council’s Fuel Assistance Program. As Federal and State support for Fuel Assistance dwindles this gener ous effort becomes even more meaningful. The Ulti mate Frisbee players had a great time and it was fun to watch them play at Volunteer Field. They come from all over the Country and playing on Chebeague is a high point in their season. We appreciate their support for our community and who doesn’t love pancakes?

The Chebeague Island Library Board of Trustees wants to extend its deepest thanks to the donors who made our 2024 fundraising campaign a success! You are the main characters in the story of a special space where Chebeaguers come together to read, to study, work, share knowledge and reinforce our sense of island community. It is a pleasure to see everyone enjoying our regular events from Story Time to Book Club and Poetry for the People. Now, with your help, we are also writing the next chapter that includes a new remote workspace for our community. We are hugely grateful to all of you who make this possible. Many thanks, Chebeague Island Library Board of Trustees

Thanks to the generosity of the Casco Bay Island Association, The Recompense Fund will be able to boost its 2025 total grant giving to Chebeague nonprofits by between $9,000 and $11,000. In giving this one-time contribution, the association asked that Recompense distribute the entire sum this year. The island association, which has closed down after 70 years of serving island communities, was founded in 1954 to address has distributed $450,000 to nonprofits, and we are pleased to be able to continue increasing the amount we make in grants each year. But membership had shrunk, in large part because of the success of islands’ nonprofits in taking up these issues. At Recompense, we continue to carefully grow our endowment while remaining committed to annual grants in support of Chebeague nonprofits. In the past decade, Recompense has distributed $450,000 to nonprofits, and we are pleased to be able to continue increasing the amount we make in grants each year. While most endowments adhere to a 4% spending rule, Recompense grants range from 5-6% of the endowment. Recompense has also expanded its grant-giving policies to include operation costs, to reflect the changing needs of the island nonprofits. Recompense strives to remain a long-term, steady source of help to island nonprofits working to keep the community healthy and thriving. Please go to https://www.recompensefund.com for detailed information on grant applications, annual reports and profiles of island nonprofits. This year’s deadline for grant submissions is April 15. Selectboard News - August 2025
The Chebeague Housing Task Force is at work researching a plan for the island to support year round housing. This effort includes working with the Island Institute to collect information on successful efforts on Maine islands and coastal communities. Please complete the survey for Chebeague Island at https:// www.surveymonkey.com/r/T97RXS9 The link will be posted and paper copies of the survey are available at the Town Office. Stay tuned for the results and a public presentation in August. Parking and Traffic Conversation on Saturday, August 9 at the Island Hall at 9:00am. Parking continues to be a major topic for the town, so let’s join for a community conversation about recent changes to the parking ordinance. The Select Board invites everyone for a community conversation to hear feedback and input, please plan to attend. Coffee and coffee cake will be served. The Select Board endorsed plans for two beach parking spots: four spaces to be built at the top of the Hook Road, and four spaces on Jenks Road above the Sandy Point Beach. At both sites, the parking will be located out of the sand dune area, which are critical to maintaining the dunes which protect the beach. The plans were made in cooperation with adjacent property owners and final plans will be submitted for approval by the Planning Board. While on the topic of beaches, thanks to all who have been giving
space for the Piping Plovers at the Hook and Sandy Point. This federally endangered species has found a home on Chebeague, and thank you to everyone who has stepped up to keep the chicks safe, and to all dog walkers who have been exploring other areas of the island. The chicks cannot fly for 28 days, and a notice will go out when the beaches become fully accessible. The Select Board is pleased to report that the public works is fully staffed. Please welcome Aaron Bonneville to Public Works, who is joining Tanner Foley with the big equipment jobs. An example of their efforts is when a compactor machine at the Transfer Station went out of service, and Jeff Wescott asked the crew to step in with those big machines to compact the material, resulting in no interruption to service….on a Sunday. Nice job guys and thanks! The Selectboard meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 6 and 20 at 6 pm at the Hall. In the meantime, feel free to reach out to the Selectboard members with any questions or concerns. The Board’s contact information can be found on the Town’s website at https://www.townofchebeagueisland.org/selectmen. Notes From The Council
Did you know that the phrase “dog days of summer” has little to do with dogs? In ancient Greece, the hot, humid days of summer coincided with the rising of the star Sirius, also known as the Dog Star. We are in rolling in it now. Activity and heat are at their peak these days on Chebeague. There are camps galore at Second Wind Farm, the Recreation Center, and in sailboats on the water. Music is everywhere on the island including pop-up lawn concerts, live music at the Slow Bell and Inn, and the incredible MacBeth concert series. Have you visited the Historic Society’s exhibit or gift
shop? Have you purchased your tickets to The Commons’ Bay Mist cruise or the Rec Center’s Frolic at the Inn? Have you checked out the constantly changing, always fabulous treasures at School House Seconds? The Library is buzzing, the Transfer Station and Chedemption Shed are running at full-throttle, and we are in our busiest season. These activities depend on many hours of staff and volunteer time. We appreciate all the work and commitment it takes to make it happen. Thank You from Our Fire Department The Chebeague Island Fire and Rescue Department is thankful and humbled by the support of the Chebeague Island Community. This winter, $26,970 was raised during a fundraiser to supply our newest volunteer firefighters with Turn-Out Gear. Six Firefighters went through an intense certification training and to join the ranks of Fire Fighters and EMT’s ready to serve.
