CTC Turns 50! While CTC was incorporated in 1971, regular operations began in 1975—making this our 50th summer of service! We’re also celebrating the Islander’s 40th birthday this April. To mark the occasion, we’ve created a special video highlighting our history, people, and operations. It will premiere after the Annual Members Meeting on Saturday, July 19 at 9AM, with refreshments provided beforehand. Huge thanks to Chip Emery and family for their editing work and to Laura Hamilton, our videographer. The crew has put in countless hours gathering stories—you’re sure to see familiar faces and maybe learn something new!

Thanks to the generosity of the Casco Bay Island Association, The Recompense Fund will be able to boost its 2025 total grant giving to Chebeague nonprofits by between $9,000 and $11,000. In giving this one-time contribution, the association asked that Recompense distribute the entire sum this year. The island association, which has closed down after 70 years of serving island communities, was founded in 1954 to address Chebeague Island Historical Society- $9,740 for environmental controls for collections Chebeague Island Commons- Please help The Recompense Fund celebrate Chebeague Island’s nonprofits at our annual celebration at 5:30 p.m. Monday, August 15 at the Rec Center. It’s a great chance to hear about all the nonprofits’

pollution in Casco Bay, rotting wharves and to improve ferry service. But membership had shrunk, in large part because of the success of islands’ nonprofits in taking up these issues. At Recompense, we continue to carefully grow our endowment while remaining committed to annual grants in support of Chebeague nonprofits. In the past decade, Recompense has distributed $450,000 to nonprofits, and we are pleased to be able to continue increasing the amount we make in grants each year. While most endowments adhere to a 4% spending rule, Recompense grants range from 5-6% of the endowment. Recompense has also expanded its grant-giving policies to include operation costs, to reflect the changing needs of the island nonprofits. Recompense strives to remain a long-term, steady source of help to island nonprofits working to keep the community healthy and thriving. Please go to https://www.recompensefund.com for detailed information on grant applications, annual reports and profiles of island nonprofits. This year’s deadline for grant submissions is April 15. The board will confirm grant awards by the end of May. projects! This year, Recompense received an $11,000 donation by the Casco Bay Island Association, which folded after a 70-year run. Their contribution meant that Recompense was able to disburse $88,580 for the 2025 grants. The recipients are: $15,269 for employees’ transportation expenses Chebeague Recreation Center- $7,699 toward replacing the pool’s heat exchanger

Chebeague Island Library- $9,971 to help update the nonfiction collection Stephen Ross Foundation- $11,703 in higher education scholarships for island students In addition, Recompense has made $500 small grants this spring: to the school to support Teacher Appreciation Week and to the Whalers for the expense of an accompanist. None of this would be possible without the generosity of this community!

Chebeague Transportation Company- $8,411 toward rebuilding the push boat’s (barge) engine Kids’ Place- $10,086 for heat pumps

Chebeague Cumberland Land Trust- $7,911 to support the restoration of Indian Point Chebeague Community Church- $7,776 to grow the music program

Selectboard News - July 2025

At our last meeting the Selectboard decided to provide a regular updates on items of interest to the Chebeague community. These monthly updates will be posted on the Town website and included in the Chebeague Island Council Monthly Calendar. Selectboard Members. At the June 18th meeting the newly elected Selectboard members, Ehrhardt Groothoff and Carol White, were sworn in for three-year terms. They joined the current members Eliza Jane Adamas, Richard Hackel and David Hill on the five member Selectboard. At that meeting Carol White was elected as Chair and Eliza Jane Adams was elected as Vice Chair. FEMA Funds: Yahooo! In early June the town received $1,281,872 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to repair damage to municipal infrastructure as the result of the January 2024 storms. Kudos to Vika Wood, our Town Administrator, for her persistence and skill navigating the complex bureaucratic process to secure this substantial sum of FEMA funding. More information on how the funds will be spent will be forthcoming. Wildfire Mitigation: Many thanks to Ellie Hughes, our GPCOG Resilience Fellow, for spearheading the collaborative

wildfire mitigation effort last month. The project was initiated by Kent Nelson of the Maine Forest Service who brought the invaluable support of Team Rubicon to Chebeague. The project was successful due to the combined efforts of a large number of folks including: GPCOGs AmeriCorps Resilience Fellows, Tanner and Aaron, from the town’s Public Works Department, Stu Brown for lending his chipper, cooperative property owners, and several community volunteers. Next Selectboard Meeting: The next Selectboard meeting is scheduled for Tuesday July 1 at 6 pm at the Hall. A copy of the agenda and packet of information will be posted on the Town of Chebeague Island website the week of the meeting. In the meantime, feel free to reach out to Selectboard members with any questions or concerns. The Board’s contact information can be found the Town’s website at https://www. townofchebeagueisland.org/selectmen . Respectfully, Town of Chebeague Island Selectboard Eliza Jane Adams, Ehrhardt Groothoff, Richard Hackel, David Hill and Carol White
