Lower Narrows Dredging Tim Greer

I n January we finally had near-perfect conditions to move excavating equipment to the narrows at the lower lake (aka Sandy Narrows, Lower Narrows). Our DEP permit allows us to reclaim the sand washed off the adjoining landowner’s beach, so we removed approximately 300 cubic yards of sand and spread it back onto the landowner’s property. We dredged the lake bottom down to approximately 3 ½’ until we hit the lake bed made up of clay and debris. We also widened the narrows by removing the mound of sand on the west side placed there while using the suction dredge. When navigating the narrows this year, after spring runoff and rain, we can expect a depth of 5½’ to 6’ through the channel and a width of approximately 20’. Summer 2025 we anticipate smoother and safer navigation through these narrows. During the summer month the property owner will continue to use the suction dredge as permitted by the DEP to keep moving sand back onto his property.
