REGIONAL SCHOOL UNIT 16

Dear Residents of RSU 16, As we approach the midpoint of the school year, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on the progress we've made together and provide updates on key happenings across RSU 16. It’s hard to believe how quickly the year has progressed, and I am continually inspired by the energy and dedication of our students, staff, and community. Welcoming Students Back - This year began with a focus on hope and harmony, and it shows in our schools. Our students returned with enthusiasm, and our staff have created welcoming environments that foster learning and growth. Strategic Focus for 2024-2025 - Our district continues to be guided by the Strategic Plan. This year, we’re prioritizing fostering lifelong learners, enhancing family communication, and building a skilled workforce. These goals are central to our mission of supporting all students in achieving success. Safety as a Top Priority - Student safety remains at the forefront of our planning. This year, we’ve updated safety protocols and strengthened our collaboration with local first responders. Open communication with families plays a critical role in this effort, and I am grateful for your continued partnership in keeping our schools safe. Community Involvement - One of the highlights of this fall has been the engagement of our community in school events. From cheering on our sports teams to attending open houses, your involvement makes a difference. I encourage you to stay connected. Reducing Chronic Absenteeism: Progress and the Path Forward - Over the past few years, we have made significant strides in reducing chronic absenteeism, which remains a priority for our district. A student is considered chronically absent if they are enrolled for at least 10 days and miss 10% or more of those days, including excused and unexcused absences. Since the 2020-2021 school year, we’ve seen steady improvements. For example, Poland Regional High School has decreased chronic absenteeism from 59.8% to 30.65%, and Whittier Middle School improved from 42.5% to 20.07%. District-wide, chronic absenteeism has dropped from 30.5% to 20.74%. While these gains are encouraging, there is still work to do. Regular attendance is critical to student success, and I ask for your continued support in ensuring every student attends school consistently. Looking Ahead - As we move through the remainder of the school year, we’re excited about the learning opportunities, events, and celebrations ahead. Please continue to watch for updates from the school and district communications to stay informed. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to RSU 16. Together, we are creating a community where we are creating a better future, one student at a time.
