Winter has a firm and chilly grip on Chebeague, and while the island is quiet now it’s only a few short months until it pops back into gear for spring, summer

and fall - the extra busy seasons for island nonprofits. And with the arrival of February, it’s also nearing time when the island’s nonprofits can begin thinking about what grant proposals they might want to submit to The Recompense Fund for 2025. Typically grant applications are due mid-April, with grants decided upon by the end of May. Look for next month’s Calendar for the official dates. Recompense’s mission is to support nonprofits ‘in their efforts to sustain Chebeague Island as a year-round community.’ In 2024, thanks to the truly generous support of our donors, Recompense was able to distribute $66,000 toward nonprofit work in transportation, education, elder support, childcare and more.
