The Disappearing Islander – It’s No Mystery! For about a week in mid-August, keen observers aboard the Independence may have noticed that the Islander was missing. And for a good reason. CTC chartered her to provide transportation for the Navy and the Coast Guard during the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland! The charters allow us to utilize our entire fleet effectively -- and provide an opportunity for capturing these amazing photos. Most importantly, the charters generate extra revenue to help sustain our operations.

Beginning 9/3, Monday through Friday CTC runs a 7:05am/7:20 and 2:50pm/3:05pm trip for teachers and students (Other passengers are welcome as well!) for the school year. Because of the agreement with Yarmouth that allows us to run these extra trips, the CTC bus does not meet these trips to allow access for the Yarmouth school bus and we are not allowed to publish them on our schedule. Over the years the school trips have changed, but doing homework while on the ferry is still a rite of passage for island students. CTC buses also provide after-school pickup for island students. The school trips run during school vacations. The School Department is responsible for issuing student passes for the ferry. Students must remain seated and inside the main cabin when the ferry is docking or underway. If parents are traveling for school purposes, please sign the school charge sheet on the ferry. The school sets policy on who may use this charge sheet - please refer questions to the CISD. School friends may use resident tickets when visiting.

New Duplex Update We now have a culvert in place at the future home of our South Road Duplex. Our next steps are to work on clearing the land, add a driveway and foundation, as well as increase our fundraising efforts to help offset the overall cost of the new build.

Please be on the lookout for ways to help with this new project!

Thank you to those who attended CICA’s Annual Meeting to learn about our new project!

New Bible Study Coming in September: Acts and the Epistles How do all those little books at the end of the Bible fit into the rest of the story? The Book of Acts tells the history of the birth, life and teachings of the early church. Several of the other books in the New Testament were written during the time covered by Acts.

Timeline, History & The Writing of The New Testament Letters by Bob Emery (2022) and How to Read the Bible Book by Book by Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart (2002). We plan to meet weekly on Mondays at 4 PM beginning on September 23, at the Parish House and via Zoom. This day and time are not cast in stone; we will find a schedule to accommodate everyone who wants to attend. For more information and Zoom link, please contact Gloria at gjbrown58a@gmail.com or 846-3491.

Our goal is to read Acts and insert reading the Epistles (letters) into the chronological timeline of Acts. Dating of these various documents is not definite, but we’ll do our best to situate these letters in their historical and ecclesial settings. Our guides will be The Book of Acts: The

Notes From The Council

September is a time of transition here on Chebeague. Summer families with kids go back home to get ready for school. On the island, the 7 am boat returns to bring our kids back to school. They are all a little taller and a little wiser, ready to start again. Sadly, the hubs of summer—the Rec Center and Library—will quiet down. Here at the Council, we are thankful to those who continue to support our programs so that we can support our neighbors. Thanks to the non-profits who kept up the decades-long tradition of taking on a week’s worth of shifts at the Chedemption shed. Last year we shipped 2,100 Clynk bags off the island, thereby removing over 34,000 lbs. from our waste stream. As we prepare for the cooler months, we are thankful to those who generously donate to our fuel fund. Last winter we assisted 13 households. Unfortunately, we spent more for

fuel than we took in. This winter we will help families needing sustained assistance with referrals to LIHEAP through Maine Housing and programs to assist with energy efficiency and weatherization. We will also place a cap of $1,000 on the amount of fuel supplied to households. This should allow the Council to help all neighbors in need of assistance, as the program was intended. Schoolhouse Seconds is going strong again this year. The amazing volunteers have sorted, displayed, and sold household items, clothes, artwork, jewelry, puzzles, games, and books. The funds raised go back into Council programs and towards the upkeep of the building. Norah Alper is our nurse at the Wellness Center. She is here every other Wednesday morning for drop in visits and blood draws. Happy September!
