JoMary From the JoMary Snowmobile Club

T he JoMary Riders Snowmobile Club is located on SouthTwin Lake, eight miles outside Millinocket, Maine, and at the edge of the KI/JoMary multiple use forest that spans the high country known as Maine’s famous 100 Mile Wilderness. The region lies between Mount Katahdin to the north, Mooseh ead Lake to the west, Sebec Lake to the south and the Penobscot River to the east. From the parking lot on SouthTwin Lake one can ride for hundreds of miles through spectacular for ests and over mountains without ever passing through populated areas. Nearly all the region’s snow mobile trails are on level, wide, gravel roadbeds used by Maine’s logging industry. These landowners thankfully allow use of their unplowed roads during the winter months.

Along the way there are dozens of scenic spots, moose watching oppor tunities, and off-trail challenges such as riding to the top of Ragged Mountain. Some of our fantastic groomed trail riding includes: • The Katahdin LoopTrail - the Club is directly on the “Loop” which offers a highly scenic ride around the North and South Twin Lakes, Pemadum cook Lake, Millinocket Lake and Elbow Lake. The trail passes by the town of Millinocket, as well as many ponds, streams, ridge tops and sce nic views of Mt Katahdin. • The Pemadumcook Parkway - a fast and scenic alternate route from South Twin to ITS86, Abol Bridge and Kokadjo. • The B PondTrail - running deep into the 100 Mile Wilderness, and con necting to trails leading to Kokadjo, the historic Katahdin Ironworks and the 110 Connector between Green

ville (via Gulf Hagas and the B-52 Crash site) and Brownville. There is even has a side trail to scenic Gaunt let Falls.

JoMary Riders Snowmobile Club’s trail system links to sev eral other groomed trail systems to provide riders with an endless variety of routes. Our trails link directly to these destinations: Millinocket; Kokadjo; Ragged Lake; Rockwood; Northeast Carry; Pittston Farm; Greenville; Jack man; Brownville; Schoodic Lake; Abol Bridge; Shin Pond; Chesun cook Village; Baxter State Park; Katahdin Ironworks; Gulf Hagas; and Nahmakanta Jo Mary’s trails wind through forests and over mountains, offer ing stunning views of the Maine wilderness. No matter if you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, you’ll find plenty of challenges and rewards in Jo Mary.

From The Executive Board

From the President

snowmobile shows promoting Snowmobiling in Maine Statewide, not to mention processing membership, managing the Super Raffle and answering hundreds of phone calls, emails and social media posts. Congratulations to all of the Clubs who have received new and new to them groomers and equipment this year, mostly through hard work, fundraisers, and various types of equipment grants, kudos to all of you and have fun getting them ready to hit the White stuff. By now most, all Clubs have submitted their Grant applications, Vendor forms and officer updates forms to the Dept of ACF and to the MSA, if you haven’t, please do so as soon as possible as some deadlines have passed. Also please make sure to touch base with your landowners before using their land, I feel like I’m being redundant but it is probably the single most important thing that we as Clubs can do to insure the future of our Trail system. I am going to keep it short this month but there is one last thing that I would like to talk about this month, and that is, the MSA is and has been for the last couple of years trying to change things up. We have been trying new ideas, new programs and just keeping things interesting and passionate. For instance if you haven’t checked out the new MSA Website you should, it is a completely new format with all kinds of snowmobiling information for the The Super Raffle will be bringing in good results and it helps the selling clubs with their grooming operations and other club expenses. We had a very nice homemade meal cooked by the Anson North Anson SC at the November Director’s Meeting. It was held in Madison at the Legion. We voted on a new club. North East Carry in the Moosehead area is our latest MSA club. We welcome you and appreciate you very much. Their dedication in that area will free up the other clubs who have been be providing two very well deserving family members with a significant financial incentive to support their pursuit of higher education. Remember that the eligibility not only includes traditional 4-year college programs but 2-year associates and even 1-year pro grams are welcomed to apply. The scholar ship is paid to the school after the winners have completed their first semester and are successfully enrolled in their second semes ter. The committee often sees applications for students enrolled in community colleges and trades schools that have 1-year certification programs. Our goal is to help support any MSA family member that wants to continue their education beyond high school. We often hear that the award makes a big impact as the cost of education continues to be a hardship for many, hopefully we can help provide some much needed financial relief. Keeping in the holiday spirits if your club is interested the scholarship fund is always a great place to make a donation. Maine people are tremendously generous and supportive and the holiday season is a good time to consider making a gift that will impact one of our own. Thanks for all you do. Finally, be sure to look for the full-page ad in the December and January paper touting the exciting news about the increased scholarship awards to $1,500, be sure to discuss it with any potential family member. Have a safe and healthy holiday! a passion to get it done. Lots of clubs have been busy trying to keep ahead of the rain. New bridges and reroutes are at the top of their lists. Without these fine club members, Maine would be in back, far back in the snowmobile world. A major western vendor has named Maine snowmobiling number three in the Nation! But, what they did say and I’ve been saying it along is that the our whole trail system is a destination point. While the top two had only certain areas, they considered great riding spots, they said that our system is statewide. A true testament of what we do and our work ethic is always in top form. THANKS for all you do!

rider, as well as a host of useful tools and forms for the Clubs to utilize. Another revamped source of information is the MSA Facebook page as well as there are various FB and social media Club pages, groups, and forums, which are Maine snowmobiling specific and give the rider and club member all kinds of valuable information on targeted areas before planning a trip or day ride. Club Presidents keep an eye out for email blasts, which keep you informed on real time points of interest, and things that are going on in our association and our sport, we by all means ask you to share these email blasts with your club officers to help keep everyone in the know. And lastly… I don’t need to tell you about this one because you are reading it! But Lori has worked her magic each month with this newspaper and the content within is by far some of the best reading this newspaper has ever seen. If you can, dig out an old Maine Snowmobiler from 4 or 5 years ago, look through it and see just how it has evolved into something vastly different and always deserves a read! Well that’s all for now folks, it won’t be long and we’ll be seeing each other out on the trail! And as always if you have a question, concern or just want to talk snowmobiling please feel free to reach out to me, my door is always open. Until next month, thank you for reading. Mark You clubs are very special to me if you need anything I will do my best to get things to you. My goal is to take care of you. Every club in the MSA group is a piece of a large puzzle. You all matter to me. I hate it when I get calls from clubs that can’t continue either the members are too old or they just don’t have the help. It’s very sad when we lose any of you. Ok let’s get positive! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday! AL helping. We thank them too for all they do. We will be meeting soon to discuss ways to get more money to the clubs. We have formed a new committee headed by Matt Stedman and James Cote our lobbyist. I hope that new ideas will come out of this to help ease the money crunch. I was a guest at the Wilton Lions Club last month, I spoke of what we do and how proud I am of every MSA club that makes Maine a premier place to ride. It was a wonderful meeting the folks made me feel right at home. It has been cold; the North has snow and depending on whom you talk too sounds like it’s going to be a great winter.

H ello Everyone and welcome to the December edition of the Maine Snowmobiler. Since last month the MSA and its supporting Clubs have been busy taking care of business, getting trails ready, holding fundraising events, submitting Club paperwork Grant applications and preseason Groomer maintenance. The MSA has been busy as well attending club events, holding Trails Workshops, traveling to out of state

As of Nov.16 th , when this column was written, 186 of the 285 clubs in the state had submitted memberships. WE are still asking membership people to PLEASE check with the member and indicate how they want to receive their ME Snowmobiler newspaper. The membership total as of the same date, 11/16/23 are as follows: Total family memberships 3,424, total business memberships 726, with total of both at 4,150. Counts by region: Northern Region 775 members Western Region 775 members Eastern Region 1,435 members Central Region 633 members Coastal region 527 members Also, on that same date, the top 10 clubs in the state with submitted memberships were: Washburn, Moosehead Riders, Blue Ridge Riders, Northern Timber Cruisers, Pleasant Mountain SC, Fryeburg, East Branch Sno Rovers, Poodunck, Penobscot SC, and Rockabema SC. Keep the memberships coming in!! nage and corridor stakes in fields. My browsing on Facebook has shown me this year’s theme appears to be bridges. Reset a bridge. Redeck a bridge. Build a new bridge. Bridge after bridge after bridge. I’m sure the lumber yards through out the state appreciate the business. It’s a tre mendous example of how our volunteers are so important to the sport of snowmobiling. I want all the clubs to know that your dedication and effort does not go unnoticed. THANK YOU!! By the time you read this it will probably be close to Christmas and New Years. Take time to enjoy family and friends! Until next year…. Brent

I was at a regional club meeting in East Machias, 4 dif ferent mapping meetings in Lewiston, Bangor, and Caribou, and Skowhegan and a trail signage workshop in Madawaska. Add in the regular club, E-board, and MSA Directors meetings and, for sure, the 23-24 season is in full swing. We don’t even have snow yet, but I know all this effort will pay dividends once the snow flies. Speaking of efforts, I have been impressed by all the trail activity throughout the state. Hi Fellow Snowmobilers With the holidays, fast approaching it will be a good opportunity to think about family members that might benefit from the MSA Scholarship. Whether a senior in high school or someone currently enrolled in a post high school program the holiday season is great time to explore options for financial help with education. The timing is excellent too as the scholar ship committee is excited to announce that the scholarship awards have been increased to $1,500, starting next year the MSA will

Commission meeting coming up. Going to be a bit heated I think, looking to get some legislative proposals going. Town view vs Snowmobile view of what a discontinued road is needs to be cleared up. Your best bet is to ask the abutting landowners not the towns. LD296 increased snowmobile and atv registration by $4 up to $5. Disappointed because we didn’t have representation on this issue. IF&W didn’t have time to support the bill. Hospitality report given by Gail Ryan. Please contact Gail with your card requests. Scholarship Committee: Berry Ryan - giving away two $1,500 scholarships. Committee is working on revamping the scholarship applications etc. Details will be in the December paper. New Business - Al - have a new club we need to accept into MSA Northeast Carry welcome to the MSA. M/S/C Sandy Patrcick promoted running a beauty pageant with the intent of getting younger people involved in the MSA. Perhaps a yearly representative, like an MSA Snow Queen, could be elected who would act as a liaison for the snowmobile industry, attending fairs, shows, etc. Perhaps they could start with a coronation. Applications by October 15 th . There should be an incentive for winning the crown. Back to Al - MSA will be acquiring new furniture, projectors, a trailer for putting supplies in to bring stuff for shows. Credit Card - had a fraud alert a couple weeks ago. It might be easier to protect us by having a credit card. The Yamaha Vector stored Al’s house - thinking it might be a good time to sell if anyone is interested in buying it. Pine Tree Camp egg ride coming up. A large piece of land is being sold to the Penobscot Nation, details to follow. Some trail signs just came in, they are being divided out. 50/50 - $113 - John Monk Pot of Gold - Chesterville County Ramblers - no one present so $400 forfeited. Meeting adjourned at 8:17pm. Respectfully Submitted, Brad Barker We have had 2 virtual meetings and 1 in person meeting since beginning. We did a brainstorm ing session at the show and gathered a handful of ideas there as well. An e-mail blast has been sent out to clubs asking for ideas. We need all your help to get ideas from folks who are in the trenches working everyday to keep the clubs going. Once we have ideas from our membership, we will combine them with our own, group the ones that are similar, ensure we understand them & begin to sort them into categories to deep dive into how they could/would work. Work through your club at the next meeting to have this as an agenda topic then get your ideas to us. Northern Region Vice-President: Matt Stedmen - club trail work is going wide open and fundraisers are happening. Eastern Region Vice-President: Eileen Lafland - Called attention to the eastern region clubs that were there. Clubs are pushing memberships, there’s a regional meeting this Thursday at East Machias. Thank you Gary Dowling and the Downeast Trail Riders for setting that up. Trailwork is being done between the raindrops. There is still a lot to do with a small number of people. They are doing the best they can so bare with them they are working hard. Western Region Vice-President: Jerry Major: Sent out an email blast to the eastern region but it didn’t work. January meeting will be turkey pie and held at Norway fire station. Someone donated them a truckload of telephone poles. Trailwork is going well. Central Region Vice-President: Jack Lord - Glad it is in Madison because I get to see people that I haven’t seen in a long time. The issue in Bingham is being worked on and seems to be moving in a positive direction. I need a trail inspectors and received a volunteer from the audience. A lot of clubs do stop sign IDs for roads and logging road crossings are including a GPS 911 location. The trail from Oakland to Bingham is open. Coastal Region Vice-President: Dave Watson - everyone is out doing trail work and building bridges. Waiting for snow! If we don’t get snow we don’t ride. Start doing snow dances. Old business - Al Almost 4,000 people attended the show. It was a wonderful show and a great turn out. Every vendor booth was full. Vintage show is going to have a bigger space next year. Off trail riding - signs are on order still. Other signs have come in. Safety - there are classes coming up, we did one at the show last month. A lot of awareness advertising in our Newspaper, guide and online. They offered to pay for the eight Safety posters we’ve had for the last few years. We had some made coated with laminate. We will soon receive another batch mounted on a hard backing material. We will have around 800 when the order is complete. Thank you Mr. Mike Hammond! Also, if you have any of the BIW signs I gave you would you please send me a picture of them out in the field? I need to show the BIW folks where they are. They’ve offered to make more. 24 hr. grooming and the curvy logo. We’ve developed a great friendship, I never asked them for anything they came to me with the offer. We had 10 people die on our trails last year at the start of every year I preach nobody dies this year! Please folks we have 10 fellow rid ers that won’t be home for Christmas. Ride smart and safe don’t drive drunk, these new sleds are so quiet smooth and fast, if your new to snowmobiling try to take the IF&W safety course you can do it online now. And if you have not been on a sled for a few years beware they giddy up fast. Watch out for wildlife and obstacles on the trail. Stay off the frozen bod ies of water. If you have to go on it ask the locals first. Practice safety at home watch out for ice on your decks, steps and your driveway keep in mind of black ice. Be careful under foot. When it snows and your car is left outside, brush it all off not just the windshield! Make sure your smoke detectors /C02 detectors work, if you’ve had them awhile buy new ones. Change your batteries Wear your PPE when running equipment. It only takes a second or two to safety up!

Just those folks being at a road crossing will make rider’s wonder. The Com missioner and all the top shelf Wardens are on board. Myself and Anson North Anson SC Presi dent Jon Nelson put on a Snowmobile Safety Awareness Class at the Anson Middle School last month. It was well received the kids thought it was cool to see a snowmobile in the gym. This month I’ll be putting one on in Medway sponsored by the East Branch SC. G reetings & Happy Holidays to all! Well the early snowfall has a lot of people excited about a great season. Let’s Hope Mother nature keeps it going, Super raffle was a huge success, congrats to all the winners.. There has been a E Blast to all club presidents to discuss how we can raise money to overcome shortages of how much money clubs receive from club grants, municipal grants and the actual money they spend each year. It is my hope that we will get a lot of feedback from all of you. Please reach out to any of the Regional VP’s or there is a form on our website you can use. I wish all of you a fantastic holiday season and a great winter riding. Ride right, Ride Safe Dave In the meantime all of your officers are diligently working to stay on top of things, however we need your help. The funding committee is needing YOUR ideas on a way to close the funding gap, we showed a 3 million dollar gap last year. One way would be for everyone to report every hour worked, all equipment used and every dollar spent, we are sure the gap is more than 3 million dollars and to go get legislation to close that gap, we need YOU to report every penny. Thanks in advance for your help on this. We sent out an email alert to all the western region clubs asking for time, date and place of your meetings, only 2 responded, please reach out to me with this info, it would be much appreciated. Until next time, keep praying for SNOW, register those sleds and enjoy the winter. GOD BLESS Jerry was great to get together and catch up. I keep preaching safety but in my defense having seen two fatality on the trails since I started riding, I just never want to witness anymore. They are our trails and as such it is our responsibility to do all we can as far as maintenance, signage and make sure they are as safe as we can make them. I hope everyone is ready to have a great winter. I am getting ready, doing my snow dances, praying for big snow. If anyone in the in the Central Region would like to step up and take over my job as Central Region V.P. I have been at this for 18 years and it’s time for me to step down and let someone with new ideas and a new outlook take over, Someone younger, please think about this and come talk to me. As always be safe out there working on trails and riding. Keep Smiling and if you need me feel free to call me. Barb says if you are in the Bingham area stop by for coffee. Jack don’t care, Perhaps some day they will have an awakening and join our clubs and help physically and financially.

It really does take everyone to get the jobs done! In mid-November there was a regional meeting held in East Machias. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Gary Dow ling, the Downeast Trail Riders, Joe Higgins, Brent Spaulding, and Bill Kitchen for helping to set it up and being guest speakers. A very large THANK YOU goes to Larry Lafland for driving us down there, for making sure all clubs had maps, and for taking pictures of the meeting along with everything else he did. More THANK YOU’S go to all the clubs that came and participated. It was great to see everyone and to talk snowmobiling with all. Thank you also to the people that attended from Machias. They are in the process of revi talizing the club there, which is a wonderful thing. A message to Eastern region clubs- You always make me proud when I see how many memberships you submit and the Eastern Region clubs that are near the top in total mem berships across the state. Your hard work does not go unnoticed by me so again, Thank You. It is my hope to set up at least one and may be two more regional meetings. Watch your emails and regular mailboxes for invitations to these. It is your chance to meet with MSA representatives and trail committee people to ask questions and share your thoughts. Until January. If you are riding, please be safe! See you in 2024! Eileen Finally, as we get to the beginning of the riding season, I would ask (beg) clubs to plan a trail side safety check in co-ordination with the Maine Warden Service. It’s a great way to interact with riders and promote safety on the trails. Find a good intersection or location with plenty of visibility and room along the trails, set up for a few hours on a weekend day and help us all improve rider safety and maybe prevent an accident this winter. “Ride safe today, Ride again tomorrow” is not just a great logo for a sticker or shirt, it’s a goal of the MSA and we should strive to show this message to the riders from the local club level on our trails. Reach out to your regional VP to discuss and plan an event like this. If you have a question, problem, concern, or idea on snowmobiling in “The County”, get in touch with me. You can contact me at the phone # or email below. Matt Stedman signs as the trail may not be exactly where it was last season, how it shows on your paper map or digital screen. Club members know best and on the ground signage trumps all other means. It is great to see collaboration between clubs and areas within Aroostook County work together towards a common goal. Check out club websites, MSA newspapers & Facebook pages to see what’s going on so you can plan a trip up and get in on the excitement. There is a lot happening over the course of 12-16 weeks of winter for our clubs. The Northern Region Showcase ride this winter will be Saturday March 16 th hosted by the Easton club. These regional rides are a great way to explore a new area and meet people who you may only have connected with by phone or social media. We will have a ride during the day & MSA Directors meeting in the evening.

H appy December fellow snowmobilers, It’s almost Thanksgiving and we have snow on the ground in the County! It’s been white a few times and we have a decent cold forecast in the 10-day. Hopefully we can get some frost in before much more white stuff comes. Signs are going up, bridges have been re decked and made ready, new culverts installed, re-routes determined, cut & constructed. It has been great to see folks from all over New England travel to help clubs this fall. Dedicated riders, TRUE snowmobilers. Clubs are still posting on clubhouse signs and social media for workdays so please make time in your busy schedule to help physically or financially. You will see some changes, as always, in the trail footprints in Northern Maine this season. Landownership changes, plans for timber management activities and new development happen all over and all the time. A big THANK YOU to the new landowners and club volunteers for making re-routes & connections happen to keep our communities & businesses connected to the trails. Watch for

Larry and I wish you all the best of holidays and hope that 2024 brings cold, cold weather and great amounts of snow for months! As 2023 was winding down through November and in to December clubs were still working hard to repair all the damage done by the great amounts of rain we have had this year. There were many, many bridges that either moved, broke up or washed away. With all the bridge work and washouts, clubs have had to spend many hours and large amounts of money on these projects. It is getting harder and harder for clubs to afford doing all these repairs by raising funds from memberships, ow! This year has gone by fast, hasn’t it? 2023 is almost in the books and 2024 is
