Re-route for Glenburn Lake Riders SC By Barry Ryan

T his is a re-route of one of Glenburn’s local club trails. The trail from Village Variety that goes towards Ken duskeag Stream was closed by the landowner due to the amount of trash that has been discarded on their land. This just shows the lack of respect and poor deci sion making of a few “lazy” people that leads to this consequence. The result of this action forces the land owner to take action and close the trail to all recre ational activities. The second part of this issue falls directly into the lap of the local snowmobile club to find and open up a new alternative trail. GLRSC was lucky in this instance, where an abutting landowner took the time and resources to flag and mark out a new trail with the club President. The landowner and five GLRSC members with chain saws, brush cutters, and their multi-purpose side-by side Kubota worked for five hours cutting and stacking aside numerous piles of small trees and alders. They had to cross two small streams; one will require an additional bridge at about $200 - $250 in materials and a few more hours of labor. Thanks to their hard work, they were able to connect to the existing trail system. Many thanks to Don P. (the abutting landowner) and the trail crew (Eddie P., Dillon K., R.P., Dustin, and Barry R.) Glenburn Lake Riders plans on signing and building the needed bridge later on this fall. In closing, as stewards of the land that we are allowed to use - PLEASE - when you make trash - take it out and as you find trash, bot tles and cans, PLEASE take it out as well. The landown ers will certainly appreciate the effort to keep their prop erty clean and allow it to be accessible for ALL to enjoy.

one trail at a time. All you have to do is look to social media on some of the Snowmobiling pages and you will see the countless hours of trail work that is being put in by our Clubs each week, it is pretty impressive to say the least. I tip my hat to everyone that puts time into their local club and contributes in one way or another. The MSA has been very busy this fall attending many events with the most recent one being our own Snowmobile show in Augusta last month. The show was very successful for us with record numbers on Saturday and good attendance on Friday and Sunday as well. The Trails workshop on Saturday morning at the show played host to over 80 attendees and was well put together by Trails Chairman Brent Spaulding with lots of great information and good conversation. The Vintage Snowmobile Show was a huge success and had over 60 sleds on display, Big thanks to Chris Ring and company for putting on an awesome display. And finally we can’t thank all of the vendors, volunteers, and sponsors working the show all weekend, without ALL of these people the show would not be a show. November will prove to be busy as well, as we turn our focus to the Big E Sled Expo in West Springfield Mass. Where the MSA will be setting up a booth and representing Maine and promoting its second to none snowmobiling product. We are also closing in quickly on the MSA Super Raffle, which is slated to be drawn on Dec 12 th at the Civic cial thanks to Bob LaFontaine for working two long shifts and we also had a couple of new volunteers. By all accounts the Show was a major success, attendance was up, vendor spots were full and lots of sales and lots of excitement for the upcoming season. By the end of the weekend, the scholarship fund had a profit of about $640, great job by all. Speaking of the scholarship fund, we are always looking for donations and new and cre ative ways to help support our cause. Recently we received a couple of neat donations, Red Barn restaurant gave us the proceeds from an ice cream sale and one of our snowmobile clubs sent us their share of a club 50/50 raffle. Anything helps and we are forever thankful for the support, with the holiday season com ing maybe if your club is in the giving spirit, you could encourage members to make a donation to the scholarship fund. Now the really exciting news is the schol arship committee has decided to increase the scholarship award to $1,500. We all know the cost of post high school education is expen in New Hampshire you made us proud with our MSA display. I attended a landowner’s luncheon in Ripley. What a feed that was! Prime Rib and Great Lakes salmon along with fresh vegetables donated by folks in the area The Ripley Snowmobile Club is a wonderful group of folks that make you feel like part of their family. We had a special evening at The Red Barn in Augusta. The Scholarship Committee had an ice cream social at the restaurant all the money sold went to the committee. They also sold raffle tickets and there was lots of interest on a rainy night. The Fryeburg SC did another record week selling raffle tickets at the Fair. I attended the Bridgton Brewfest with the Bridgton / Pleasant Mountain SC. Another great weekend! Off to Glenburn for a ten-club meeting, another successful night. It was a long night but always worth it seeing lots of friends you don’t see every day! We had a Directors meeting at the Sportsman Alliance of Maine Building, which went very well probably because I was not there. Mark did a great job making it work. Our Granddaughter was nominated and won membership to the Honor Society. Something we could not miss! I’d like to send out a BIG THANK YOU to Steve Shuman from Charlies Motor Mall for sponsoring our MSA Show again this year.

Center in Augusta. Lots of great prizes are up for grabs this year with the top prizes being three sleds and two enclosed trailers, as well as dozens of gift cards and weekend getaways, so get yours today as they are going quick! Lastly there are a few reminders and deadlines that Clubs need to be aware of and that is your Club and Municipal grant application deadlines are coming up quickly and MUST be into Joe Higgins office at the Dept. of A.C.F Snowmobiling division by December 1st. As well as your officer update form and club vendor form. The MSA officer update form needs to be submitted to the MSA office as well and can be found on the website under club forms, or you can find it in your Membership packet that you received earlier this fall. This should be sent in as soon as possible as this is a valuable contact list for all of our correspondence with the club Presidents and Trail Masters to keep them updated on what’s happening and informed on any real time changes or issues of importance through Email blasts and such. So once again, keep fighting the good fight and helping the sport of Snowmobiling become a reality each year. And as always if you have any questions, concerns or just want to talk about anything Snowmobiling my door is always open! I hope to see everyone out and about at the meetings and events over the Winter, so until next month thanks for listening! Mark The Raffle is doing very well the prizes are incredible. We took delivery of the Alcom/ Sno Pro Inline trailer from Scott’s Recreation. Special thanks to Tory at Scotts in Manchester and of course, Dan Mills the head man from Alcom whom makes me whatever I ask for! The Arctic Cat from Kramer’s is a head turner, the Polaris from County Sports is a great looking sled also! And the Ski Doo 200 is just a nice little unit from Mountainside Sports. The Nitro trailer is one great trailer everyone talks about it after seeing it we have all three sleds in it and still have room to spare. Chad Dow is a personal and wonderful friend. The other prizes are just as important. December will be here soon and it’s going to be an exciting night at the Augusta Civic Center. We’ll be having the next Directors meeting in Madison hosted by the Anson/North Anson SC at the hall behind Reny’s off Main Street. Food will be available for $15.00 per person. 5pm social and eating around 6:00 pm everyone is welcome. Thank you to everyone who makes Maine the destination point for snowmobiling in the Country. You folks make it happen! I’m proud of all of you. Be safe out there! AL sive and goes up every year, as a group we are committed to do our part to help our MSA families. This year’s campaign will award two $1,500 scholarships to a couple of very deserving students. Please help us spread the word and look for our promotions in both the December and January paper. Again, the committee is always available to discuss the scholarship, whether you have questions about eligibility or your club wants to help or you might want to get involved, feel free to reach out to any of us. Harvey They’re a GREAT company and Steve is a wonderful gentleman. It’s nice to have him and his family’s friendship.

W hat a wonderful job clubs around the state have been doing getting their memberships in to the MSA office. The season began with a few clubs a week sending them in and Liz was entering those as they arrived. Then the flood gates opened and boy did they arrive by the hundreds each day!! Liz and I have been working steady to get them all entered in a timely fashion. Keep them coming, everyone! Just a reminder to membership people Please make sure you are checking with the member that their mailing address is correct and how they would like their MSA paper this year. We do know there was a printing error on the renewal cards and the zero at the beginning of the zip code was omitted. We have received some memberships back this year that have the same address as last year, but when we sent the paper to that address it was returned as undeliverable. The box on the right side is for how or if they would like to receive the paper. Please ask them when they renew. Thanks to some clubs that are writing either print or digital on new member cards. That is a great help to us! Here they are the membership total as of Oct 23, 2023. By the time, you read this they will have increased greatly, but our deadline for the printer is about three weeks earlier than when you receive it.

H ello Folks, I am truly excited to be writing another column for you because this can only mean one thing, that we are another month closer to actually riding our snowmobiles! Things are ramping up quickly for most Clubs, MSA and with our partners over to the Dept. of A.C.F Snowmobile Division. With the tremendous amount of rain and wind most of the summer and into the fall it has without a doubt wreaked havoc on most trails throughout the State. But we Snowmobilers are a resilient group and are getting it done one bridge, one washout and

From The Executive Board Secretary’s Report - Brad Barker 586 th Directors Meeting - SAM in Augusta, Maine - October 17, 2023

Talked about what we need to do to get more applicants. Increasing the amount from $1000 to $1500. Steering Committee Chairman: John Monk Thursday there is an abandoned roads committee meeting. There are a couple committee’s now. The Steering Committee has been keeping day to day business running and regular Committee meetings will continue. Al is running all over the state. Please, give him a pat on the back when you see him. He’s doing a great job. Hospitality: Gail Ryan - hasn’t sent out any sympathy cards. Shared a joke. Hall of Fame Chair: Aleta Rioux - no report. Mark C.- about the Show. What we really need is help with setup and breakdown. Last couple years we have had maybe a handful of people and we could really use some help. Thanks to Lori and Bob for the Grass Drags weekend. There were a lot of people there and we got a lot done. Our booth looked like a million bucks. We sold roughly 1000 tickets and a lot of apparel. ITS 115 has been moved over to the east side up through Kingfield to Lexington going right to Eustis. They have gas at the Lexington clubhouse, there’s an ATM machine as well. Please look for the email blasts from MSA the will be from contactus@ mainesnowmobileassociation.com please whitelist this address. Northern Region Ride - March 16th in Easton Trailbreakers Clubhouse will do a ride based on their conditions in Mars Hill and Presque Isle and dinner meeting. December meeting is the 12 th is the Super Raffle at the Augusta Civic Center. New Business: Looking for a motion to accept the Dead River Sno Riders from the Forks into MSA. M/S/C Liberty Mutual Rep - will be at the Show on Sunday Big E show in Massachusetts is coming up in November. Pot of Gold - Shirley Bog Trail Busters not present, so forfeited $400. 50/50 - $69 Liz won and donated it back. Dismissed at 7:48 lobbyist. We will be meeting at least monthly to share information, understand options and become informed on what direction the MSA membership wants us to go. Our goal is to understand the best path forward to close the funding gap. We know that there is over a $3 million funding gap from last winters’ reported expenses and program income. (Grants paid out vs. volunteer hours + clubs’ submitted costs’). I know this isn’t close to the full gap because most folks do not include ALL the hours and expenses that go into running their club. We need input from you, the MSA members… the folks who know their club expenses and cur rent income so we can work with our lobbyist to understand what ways forward have the best chance at succeeding, then bring them back to the membership to ensure we work on the right one(s). Once we have ideas from our membership, we will combine them with our own, group the ones that are similar, ensure we understand them & begin to sort them into categories. Look for an email blast to your club as an opportunity to have input on how the MSA should go about increasing funds coming back to clubs for trail maintenance & grooming equipment.

happening at the show. Important dates - Club and Municipal Grants due December 1 st . MONDAY November 13 Directors meeting - Madison Legion Hall, North Anson Club with 6pm dinner. Brad got 30 and they will be moved by a pulp truck. You have to load and move them yourself. Eastern Region Vice-President: Eileen Lafland Clubs are hard at work on the trails fixing water holes and blow downs. Hoping for more volunteers. Praying for freezing cold before it snows. Landowners and raffles are going great. The February 17th directors meeting will be at the East Branch Snow-Rovers Snowmobile Club! Northern Region Vice-President: Matt Stedmen Clubs are out there working on bridges, water holes, blowdowns, and getting that done. Been working on fundraising and membership all summer. Western Region Vice-President: Jerry Major Two or three things, good that some things are settling down. If anyone is looking for mats in Auburn 125 for brand new reject ones and some used ones available. Also poles. Having trouble getting directors. How do you find them? Only have presidents and directors. January 16 th meeting at the fire station in Norway. Liberty Mutual is doing away with their regular snowmobile insurance as of November 1 st . Enviromats are available at CMP lot in Leeds. Call Joe for more information. Central Region Vice-President: Jack Lord - not here Coastal Region Vice-President: Dave Watson - not on Funding Committee: Mat Stedmen - started a a workshop in your area, please reach out to me and we can coordinate a time and place. One important addition to the signage pro gram this year is related to the MSA spon sored legislation—LD732. This new law now gives game wardens authority to cite off trail riders on the spot much like a sheriff might write a speeding ticket. Fines start at $100 and scale up for repeat offenders. This will greatly enhance the ability to deal with problematic off trail situations, but there are some guide lines to be followed. Signs must be posted and local law enforcement must be informed and/ or consulted about the areas posted. Landown ers will no longer be required to press charges but should be informed of any situations being dealt with. There are two new signs (see Pics) related to LD732 that will be available through Joe Higgin’s office. The new signs were not available at the Maine Snowmobile Show, but if you are reading this article, they should be in stock. This will most certainly be a “learn ing” year for this new law, the Game War dens, and riders at large-- but it will address a long-standing problem on our trail system. The weather is turning and hopefully our water woes are subsiding. Rest assured winter is coming! All for now.. Brent

committee on funding last month on grants and how to fund clubs. Start small and will bring in more folks as needed. Discussed the gap of about $3M to be able to fund all the clubs. We are falling short on funding the grants. How do we propose legislation to fill that gap? Looking for ideas from anyone. People in this room. What is your thought on how to do this? To raise funding for snowmobile clubs. Once we get ideas, we’ll go through them and see how we can use them. Check with clubs on how we should proceed. We NEED the input of our membership to show up when we go in front of a committee at the state house. Reach out to regional directors/VP if you have ideas. Safety - Al was not present Membership Report: Eileen Lafland: Liz is working hard to enter them. They are rolling in at a great pace. Next month I will have a breakdown by region. I am starting to help enter some as well. Keep them coming! If you have any questions, membership@mesnow. com and I’ll get back to you. Ron Nunan - Lori - Lexington Snowmobile Club. Applied for the Polaris Trail Grant and got accepted and will be getting $10,000 for our club. There is also a Ski-doo grant and a Yamaha one, too. Application process wasn’t too bad, it’s all done online. Fill in the questionnaire. Sep 1st and May were the deadlines. Once you get it, you have to wait three years before you get it again. No strings attached. You need to spend it and use it. Club has to be a nonprofit. They want to see pictures like on a bridge that they helped. Do good PR work. Trail Committee Chair: Brent Spalding Been quiet but Rangeley has an issue with AFM, so 68 miles are shut off for logging. Have completed work with Skidoo map layer. Trails work class at the show -Saturday at 9. Joe will be in there to talk about the new legislation for off trail riding. The Trail meeting is upstairs. Don’t have off trail signs yet. New MSA logos are available in stickers. They will be for sale at the show. Scholarship Committee: Harvey Chesley was not here but Berry Ryan stepped in. Scholarships are going along pretty good.

C all to order by Mark with the Pledge of Allegiance at 6:38 Secretary’s report M/S/C The treasurer’s report was read and placed on file at the office. President’s opening comments: Al was at his granddaughter’s induction to the National Honor Society. Congratulations!! Executive Vice-President: Mark Chinnock Snowmobile show booths sold out. Good weekend in Epping Super Raffle is going really well and having a ton of requests for more tickets. Sold a LOT at Fryeburg Fair - set records, over $15,000 Park and Ride - working to create a database to put on the website and in the newspaper and next year will go in the Maine Guide. Email Blast to club presidents, there is a link on the website for Officer Update Forms, please include physical addresses for packets to be delivered, works better than a PO Box. Packets go to club presidents or the project director if it is a municipal grant. Also a link to add Park n Ride locations on the website. If you want to include one to help bring people to your town. Need physical address. The signage portion of that event is something that can be brought to a town or Club near you. One major goal of the MSA Trails Com mittee is to educate our family on consistent and safe signage. We’ve lost many folks while riding on thin ice avoid it whenever you can. Go around on land instead of taking a shortcut over ice. I lost a work buddy after he thought the ice was strong enough on the Kennebec River. He too was taking a shortcut home. Our Maine weather changes quickly be pre pared and wear the right clothing, layering is the new greatest thing, good helmets, gloves, boots, waterproof outer shell wear. Never ride alone always ride with a buddy. At night slow down and watch for wildlife, don’t overdrive your headlight. If your new or haven’t ridden for a while and you have a newer sled, be careful these new snowmobiles are super quick and ride smooth. The new sleds have lots of gadgets and buttons pay attention to riding not play ing with the new electronics. I had another friend who I describe as an elite rider who was adjusting his instruments and struck an object resulting in serious injury. Prepare for emergency’s carry a survival and first aid kit. Make sure your sled is in tiptop shape we have lots of miles of trails. Sometimes we go further than we intend too, bring along some food granola bars, candy, and water. Yeah, I know it will freeze but we can always warm it over a fire! Your sled can be maintained by many certi fied dealers throughout the state we have top notch folks that make your machines run like new. It’s November folks we’re getting close be patient. Look for a safety course date in this newspaper, website, or IF&W’s website. Please be safe out there on the trail and at your home, cold weather is here make sure your wood stoves and furnaces and heating sources are up to date, along with smoke and CO2 alarms, fire extinguishers should be close by too. Ride Safe! AL W ell, Farmer’s Almanac says we’re going to get some snow this year, it seems to be confirmed by other weather predictions. So all we need to do is Join a club (or clubs) and register your sleds. Invite friends to get involved. And....... start doing your SNOW DANCE!!! MSA super raffle is in full swing. Have you bought your tickets? Great prizes.... Soon all clubs will be getting an email blast regarding “Snowmobile Funding”. We are looking for your input on how we should move forward to getting funding for our trails? I look forward to hearing from all of you with ideas. Please reach out to me via email, text, or call me. All my info is listed in this paper. And of course discuss this at your club meetings. Thank you for all your dedication to our sport. Enjoy our riding season Ride safe, Ride Right. Dave one this month from the new committee regarding funding and legislation. We NEED your input on this to help close the funding gap. Public suppers and raffles, etc. only get a small portion of the job done, so give us your ideas please. We had a great show, a very well attended trails workshop and, many various other meetings since your last paper, believe me there are a lot of dedicated folks in the MSA that keep our sport alive and well. Mother Nature has turned the corner. We saw a 35-degree swing in temperature last week, now if she will give us just half as much snow this winter as we got rain this summer, we will have a great season. I think we need Brian Wiley to come back and lead the snow dance again, we haven’t seen that for 30 or 40 years. I have also sent an email blast to the Western region clubs, please let me know when and where you meet, I would like to meet and greet as many as possible. Not much else to report, the clubs with their limited help is doing a tremendous job getting OUR trails ready, can’t thank them enough. So until we meet again, remember UNITED WE TRAIL, DIVIDED WE FAIL. Regards and GOD BLESS, Jerry Major

a club or two or three, PLEASE, PLEASE contact them and see what you can do. We all want to ride safe trails when the snow comes and helping to get them ready is part of the process. Landowner suppers have been held in the past two months at different clubs. It is won derful to see and meet the people who allow us to use their land for our trails. Without them, we might be riding in circles around our own homes! Please continue to show them respect and thank them every chance you get. The MSA Snowmobile Show will have come and gone by the time you read this. Again, this show gives MSA, dealers, ven dors, businesses, clubs, regions, and many others a chance to get people ready to ride. It was wonderful to see so many people attend and to talk snowmobiling with them. Some attendees we see each year, and others are first timers, which just proves Maine snowmobil ing is welcomed and enjoyed by all who ride here. Great job Eastern Region clubs in getting your memberships in to the office. It does seem like members are renewing at a good pace across the state, so now we need the weather to cooperate. Keep sending them in along with any new members you get so they all get their monthly paper. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The Feb ruary MSA directors meeting will be held at the East Branch Sno-Rovers club in Med way on Saturday Feb. 17th. The Sno Rovers always provide a great meal when we go there. Weather permitting and if snow conditions are right, we will have a showcase ride from their club that morning. Route, destination, and other details to follow in the coming months. Until next month, Ask Santa for cold, cold temps followed by snow and that it lasts until April!! Eileen If you have a question, problem, concern, or idea on snowmobiling in “The County”, get in touch with me. You can contact me at the phone # or email below. I look forward to meeting as many folks who help make snowmobiling in the Northern Region possible, you are a hard working crew and should be proud of the jobs you do. Matt Stedman visit all landowners need to be asked for the privilege of using their property. Take the time to explain specifically what the club is asking for, and how the trails help snowmobilers connect to other areas in our region and state with this trail system. Another item of interest for the landowner may also be the economic impact the use of their land is to your town or region. These trails help businesses keep local folks employed! I thank you for the efforts put forth to keep finding connections, helping landowners understand the liability law, and educating people on what it is that we do. The MSA trails committee will be putting on a signage workshop December 3 rd @ 11 AM in Madawaska at their club house. The March MSA directors meeting and regional showcase ride will be hosted by the Easton Trailbreakers club in Easton Maine on Saturday March 16 th 2024. Make a reservation early and stay tuned for more details. The MSA had a great meeting with the Maine Warden Service this summer and let’s work with them to make 2024 a safe year to ride. I would like to see County clubs take the lead on trail safety. If your club would like to do a trail side safety check please reach out to a local warden or me to set it up, these are great ways to spread the message of snowmobiling safely to the community. Let’s get some set up for the winter and have a good time engaging with riders on the trail.

Alan Swett, 207-872-7282 234 County Rd, Waterville ME 04901 snowtraveler@roadrunner.com H ello Snowmobilers! Top priority this year: “BE SAFE OUT THERE” Yes, we can do it. Zero deaths are our goal. The IF&W team are hosting snowmobile safety courses all over the region. I helped on one at the MSA show. We had a great turnout with lots of questions and excitement for the new season. If one comes to your area, please sign-up operators, young and old it contains lots of knowledge and common sense to help you ride safer. Last year we had many accidents and ten deaths. Some could have been prevented. It’s never too late to attend a safety course it’s a good time to refresh your mind with logical snowmobile safety ways. Please be sure to check over your trailers, look for breaks in the framework, change your tires if they’re weather cracked, how about the lug nights and wheel bearings. Do you have a spare and is it full of air? Do all the lights work? Any breaks within the door or loading ramp? Check these items over before bad things happen. Don’t drink alcohol or take drugs before or during your snowmobile trip.

J ust home from the MSA snowmobile show, another great event! Packed full of vendors, dealers, destination information & some informative meetings. If you have never been, make sure you mark your calendar for next October. Thank you to the folks who came out and/or helped make this great show happen. An extra thank you to President Al Swett & Liz Mahaleris! Northern region clubs have been hard at it getting ramped up to be ready when mother nature gives us the white stuff to make that a reality. They have been planning and working on re-routes, rebuilding bridges, meeting new landowners, preparing and installing signage and MANY more things that need to be done before we can ride. Please reach out & give these hard working individuals your support, ask how you can help, follow their club schedules and get to an event to support them during the season. Please reach out & meet with the landowners on your system, there are many new faces in many of our towns and there may have been changes to ownership. Eileen Lafland, 207-843-7813 PO Box 733, Holden ME 04429 L.andE.lafland525476@gmail.com H Well, we are one-step closer to riding season when we hit this month. Some places may already have received some snow by the time you read this, but unless the ground has frozen completely it isn’t good riding yet. With all the rain this past summer and early fall there is sure to be many, many waterholes this year and we need a great hard freeze to make these safe. Clubs around the state have been doing what they can on the trails to get rid of or cover these holes but there will still be some. Please be careful and watch out for them. An overall plea I have heard from Eastern region clubs and I am sure other clubs around the state is, “We need help!! We need young people to step up!” With the average age of the club trail workers increasing, it is getting more difficult to get people to come clear the trails and make them ready for snow! Finding people to help groom doesn’t seem to be as big an issue as finding boots on the ground people, to walk the trails, cut brush, repair bridges, and everything else that must happen before snow falls. If you can donate a few hours to help appy Thanksgiving to all and your families.

It’s on my mind so much that tonight I couldn’t sleep, so I am putting a few thoughts together at 3am.. First off I want to remind all the presidents and secretaries that most correspondence doesn’t come to you by snail mail anymore, so be sure and report to YOUR clubs about the various e-mails you receive.
