About the Cover September means back to school. Wishing all our children a won derful school year! About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. It is available on-line at Chebeague Island News (www. chebeague.org) or www.chebeagueislandcalendar.com and mailed to every occupied residence on the island. The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submissions is noon on the 20 th day of the month preceding publication. Submissions and ad copy may be mailed (247 South Road), left at the Council office (on 247 South Road) or emailed (cheabeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com) and sent as attachments (.doc; no pdfs) or included in the body of the text. Images and photographs should be sent in a .jpg, .jpeg, or .rtf format. Please do not use the old email address at as this is an inactive account. As a courtesy and space permitting, island nonprofits are given up to a free half page each month to publish their news. Any such submissions exceeding a half page will be charged at the usual rate. All submissions become the property of the Chebeague Island Council, which reserves the right to edit them for length and clarity. Submissions that are not time sensitive may be held until there is enough space to publish them. Additional information about submissions is available at www.chebeagueislandcalendar.com. Advertising rates are as follows: full page, $70, ½ page, $35; ¼ page, $20; 4-line classified, $5; 6 to 8 line classified, $10. Each submission should include the intended publication date, size wanted, and the number of months the ad should run. All ads must be paid for at the time of submission.

The Foot Doctor

Dr. Larson comes to the Wellness Center on the 1 st and 3 rd Friday of the month. You do not need to be a Direct Primary Care patient to be seen. Please call her at 233-2502 to schedule an appointment. She will see urgent care, walk in patients as time allows. She does not accept insurance, including Medicare. If you are not a Direct Primary Care Patient there is a fee of $100.

Dr. Rybka will be at the Wellness Center on Wednesday, September 6 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Call 829-6463 for an appointment.

We all know what a special place Chebeague is. But it truly comes to light in the event of an emergency. Rich and I are so grateful for the experience, compassion and skill exhibited by our incredible emergency response team, all three times he was transported to Maine Med last

month. And it was made even more comforting when he came to and looked into the eyes of a friend and neighbor! We are eternally grateful. Sally & Rich Crapser

I have so many people I would like to thank for all of the love and support this community has shown to my family and me since my recent diagnosis. Firstly, I would like to thank all of the rescue and EMT crew members and the CTC crew who were involved in getting me comfortably and quickly transported to the mainland and then to MMC. I knew I was in good hands. I feel so fortunate to have my family members, both here and “ashore” who have made me feel so very comfortable in their home and made sure I’ve had everything I could ever want or need. I’ve especially appreciated the TLC that my Grand-pup, Newt, has given to me and for sharing his space with me. Finally, I need to express my profound gratitude to the people of this island community who have given gifts of your time, meals, flowers, cards and especially your love. Like so many of us native Chebeaguers, we sometimes speak about the many not-so-great changes that have taken place here and we long for the good old days and the wonderful people who were part of our treasured past. It has taken this “new normal” in my life to recognize that I’ve been overlooking the love and goodness that is still here! The many acts of kindness and support that has been given to me and to my family has been overwhelming and so appreciated. Looking at the island and this amazing community through new eyes has been a blessing and I’m so grateful to you all. With love and appreciation, Judy

Notes From The Council

As days grow shorter and nights become cooler, our thoughts turn to fall. School starts on Tuesday, September 5. There will be two new teachers in the school and the addition of an innovative Pre-K program, thanks to a collaboration between the school and Kids’ Place. We wish our students the best year ever. School House Seconds had a terrific year thanks to generous donations, discerning shoppers, and our hard-working volunteers. We will begin to pack up what is left and send off boxes to groups on the mainland who will distribute the items where they

are needed most. Proceeds from this year’s season will be going toward building improvements, both inside and out, as we work to preserve the former Grange for years to come. Thanks to all the non-profits for taking on their weeks of Chedemption work. We’ve kept countless numbers of returnables out of our transfer station bins. Each of the twelve non-profits received a check for $600 for their help.The Bagettes will take back over in September. Annie reminds us that boxed wine is fine, and lightens up the Clynk bags. Enjoy your September on Chebeague!
