CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY News from CTC!

Winter Office Hours Monday - Thursday 9am - 4pm Friday 9am - 12:30pm

2022 Vessel Safety Report!

Business Office: (207) 846-5227/846-3700 16 North Road, PO Box 27 Chebeague Island, ME 04017 chebeaguetrans@gmail.com www.ctcferry.org PLEASE PUT YOUR 2023 PARKING STICK ER ON YOUR CAR TO AVOID A TICKET. We will be sending in voices to parking cus tomers with outstanding balances on March 1. Payment is due by March 31. If payment is not received by that date, next year’s permit fee must be paid in full before a 2024 sticker is issued. Meet our crew! We are pleased to introduce our newest deckhand, Alex Wil lett! Alex began train ing with us in early February and has, by all reports, is doing well! He is looking forward to working as a deckhand, getting to know the community and, he says, he loves the commute to work! Please join us in wel coming Alex to CTC. Parking permit balances due!

Considerable time and effort goes into keeping our boats USCG inspected and safe, and our crews trained and ready for any emergency on the water. Much of this happens behind the scenes, often be tween trips, and preparedness is a large part of our crew’s job. In 2022 Safety Officer Beth Putnam passed the baton to Amanda Campbell, who has done a great job running CTC’s safety program since Sep tember. Amanda gave a big thank-you to Captain Beth. Beth was instrumental in the successful turno ver of the position to Amanda. Both ferries passed their Coast Guard inspections with flying colors. The crew did a great job pre paring for the inspections, completing more safe ty drills than required and ensuring that the Independence and Islander were in prime condi tion. Amanda presented her annual report at February’s board meeting. 2022 highlights included:

Crew members Amanda, Lisa and Jere my preparing to abandon ship!

The crew participated in fire extinguisher and emergency flare training with the Chebeague Fire and Rescue. ( Thanks to Chief Munroe for facilitating this training!)

All crew members were once again certified in CPR/First Aid/AED training. ( Thanks to Beth for conducting these important trainings here on Chebeague! )

CTC’s safety goals for 2023:

Reconfigure some of the Independence man-overboard equipment to improve efficiency.

Continue to evaluate and update safety training procedures for new captains and deckhands using feedback from those who have participated in the program.

Explore options for a health and wellness program for the crew.

Work with the Town and event venues to ensure public safety on the boat and wharves during large events.

Please thank Amanda and our crew for working so diligently to keep us safe on the water!

An upHILL battle but they will thank you!

Did you ever wonder how your parents or grandparents first found Chebeague? Or what, exactly, they did for work? Or where? Or what life was like on the island in the "good old days?" Some day, your children and grandchildren will be asking those questions about you. Oral history is wonderful, but memories fade and stories evolve. Why not pre

Nellie G III

serve your personal family history now while the memories are fresh? It took me a year, but I (David) now have a 72-page memoir complete with pictures that I hope will be appreciated by future generations. So start capturing those memories. They may be bored at first, but eventually your progeny will thank you! LAST MONTH’S MYSTERY PHOTO ANSWER

MYSTERY PHOTO Where is this? What is happening? When did it take place?

Congratulations!! Sharon and Cait Bowman identified the February Mystery Photo as the Island Hall. The Hall was built c. 1937 to replace the Golden Cross Hall that burned down c. 1926. Folks who donated money or worked on the building

received stock certificates and became the owners. The original stockhold ers and their descendants gave up their stock to create the Chebeague Island Hall Community Center. Submitted by Donna Damon
