Safely Using Our Services
Cousins Parking Permits
A Refresher Course
Meet our new crew! CTC has recently hired two new part-time/fill-in relief captains and two new deck hands. Captain Jason Phippen comes to CTC with a wealth of maritime experi ence, having worked in boat yards, as charter and delivery captain up and down the East Coast and, most recently, as a captain with a Portland whale watch company. Captain Scott Gleason lives in Freeport and is a full-time, seasonal captain with Monhegan Boat Line. Scott is training with us as a fill-in captain. We also welcome new part -time/fill-in deckhands, Dick Schellens and San dra Silver . Dick lives here on Chebeague and works full-time as a tech nical writer and is looking forward to working part time on the water. San dra, who lives in Freeport, has many years of experi ence deck handing on boats around Casco Bay. Most recently she has been working with Fogg Water Taxi. Please join us in welcom ing our new employees!
The guidelines listed below are common sense ways to safely use our ser vices. Following the rules and recommendations will help keep everyone safe. On the Ferry -Passengers should not open doors, enter or exit ferry until instructed by the deckhand. -Passengers in the cabin should remain seated until the ferry is tied up. -Carts and large freight must be left on stern—not brought into the cabin. -Carts should not be placed on float in foul weather. -Passengers must stay off the float when the ferry is landing. -The crew will inform passengers when they may board the ferry. -Small children must be supervised at all times and not allowed on the bow or stern without an adult present. -Dogs must always be leashed and under the owner’s control. -Passengers must not lean over the side of the ferry or sit children on the railing. - Jumping and diving from ferry are not permitted and are prohibited by federal law. Upper Dec k -Access is based on crew availability. Coast Guard regulations require a second deckhand on duty to open the upper deck. -No pets or luggage allowed on upper deck. -Both hands must be free to climb the ladder. -Passengers must face the ladder when descending from upper deck on the Islander. On the Bus -Individuals and vehicles should exercise caution when the bus is backing up at Cousins. If the back-up signal is sounding—get out of the way! The bus mirrors have “blind spots” and the driver may not be able to see you. -Passengers are not allowed to enter or exit the bus through the rear door. -Dogs must always be leashed and under the owner’s control (and kept off the seats). -Passengers should remain seated while the bus is in motion.
Business Office: (207) 846-5227/846-3700 16 North Road, PO Box 27 Chebeague Island, ME 04017 chebeaguetrans@gmail.com www.ctcferry.org PLEASE PUT YOUR 2023 PARKING STICK ER ON YOUR CAR TO AVOID A TICKET. As the Island’s population grows so does the demand for Cousins Island parking permits. Our priority for assigning spots in 2023 was: -one spot per year-round household (150 permits) -a second parking permit if there are two full-time com muters or Island businesses that demonstrate a need (7 permits) -Part time seasonal commut ers (6 permits) Only residents with vehicles registered to Chebeague Island addresses qualify for overnight parking at the Cousins Lot. We do have many “weekday worker” permits - workers traveling to Chebeague who are allowed to park during the day only Monday - Fri day. These vehicles fill spots that become available when Island daily commuters leave. Some of these vehicles may have out-of-state li cense plates. Our parking lot attendants carefully monitor vehicles to ensure compli ance.

Notes From The Council
With the holidays over, the island has returned to its quiet winter state. It’s a time to rest, recharge, and enjoy the season. The Chebeague Island Council is supporting the community through the winter with our Good Samaritan assistance program. Please contact us if you need help with your fuel costs. While the temperatures have been higher than usual, so too have fuel and electricity prices. We can also help with ferry tickets if you need to travel regularly to the mainland for medical treatments. We also provide medical alert buttons. Please call Kathy Kuntz for confidential assistance. Chedemption has slowed down to a quieter pace. Clynk pick-ups at Chandler’s have switched to Thursdays. Non-profits should
be receiving their share of the Chedemption proceeds later this winter. For all you wine drinkers out there, the Bagettes ask if you have tried any of the boxed wines? For regular table wine, they don’t taste at all different plus the boxes can be recycled and the Clynk bags will be that much lighter. Wednesday soup has been popular this winter. The soups have been delicious, and the good company can’t be beat. If you would like to offer a soup or dessert, please let Sarah Hopkins know. We’d be grateful for the help. The Wellness Center is working out the details to have a nurse from Northern Light return to the island on a regular basis. Peggy Akers, RN, will be coming on February 8 th . She will join our other providers, Dr. St John from Mend Chiropractic, Dr.Rybka, and Dr. Larson.
