Report of the Hollis Conservation Commission July 1st, 2020 to June 30 th , 2021

Current Members: Madison Moody, Chairman, Catherine Hewitt, Vice-chair, Lee Klarman, Richard Van Langen, Joanne Toone, Doris Luther, John Mattor The Covid-19 epidemic stopped all normal activities of our commission this year. We just had to “coast” through and see what would happen. Attendance of Indian Cellar was overwhelming. People realized that getting outside into sunshine and open air was desperately needed. This park provided the ideal opportunity. We posted a notice on the kiosk asking users to help maintain the trails. This experiment in public trust exceeded our wildest expectations! There was no vandalism or trash, and trails were kept clean of fallen trees and branches. There was an area of trail on the Rodney Littlefield section that needed restoration, and much to our surprise and delight we found that someone had already done it! Our other park, Googins Woods at Pleasant Hill is in good shape. It doesn’t get the use that it deserves, but we hope that changes. We urge our residents to check it out! There are benches to take a rest, and a very nice picnic table for lunch. When you do visit, realize that this was an area devastated by the great fire of 1947. Much of it was pasture at the time, as noted by the stone walls. The commission started a roadside clean-up program recently and will continue to find sections of our town that need it. It is also very nice to see our residents tidying up the roads near their residences.
