In Memory of Ester Knight The Island Commons lost its most enduring and dedicated volunteer with the passing of Ester Knight on April 1. Ester was among the visionaries in the 1990s who conceived of the idea of an assisted living home to enable islanders to remain in the place they loved as they aged. Ester is credited with naming this brave venture: Island Commons. She believed that the Commons was to be a community-conceived, community-funded, and community-run service to Chebeague. From the day the first resident moved in until recently when she “retired,” Ester was a familiar face at the Commons, sharing her skills as a registered nurse, compassionate caregiver, good listener and tireless supporter. She will be deeply missed by all of us.

Notes From The Council

The Chebeague Island Council was so sad to learn of the death of our long time Board member and friend, Ester Knight. Ester served on the Council Board for over 20 years, in every position, always ready to help. For the last dozen years, she managed the Fuel and Samaritan Fund requests, always ready to help folks in need. The Council joins the entire community in extending our sympathy to the family. The Council’s Annual Health Fair has a huge success. The addition of the hearing screening was so popular that she agreed to stay until 2:00. In total, over 30 islanders were screened by the nurses and an additional 15 had their hearing tested. Thanks to the USM Casco Bay Partnership Nurses, Harvard School of Public

Health, and the Council volunteers, for all their hard work. And a special Thank You to all the businesses who donated the great prizes. And the winners are: Lobsters from Andrew Todd – John Holt, Lobsters from Amos Doughty – Richard Hackle, Oysters from Chebeague Oyster Co. – Kathy Kuntz, Pool Pass from Chebeague Recreation Center – David Keyes, Slow Bell Gift Certificate – Jackie Trask, Red Studio Gift Certificate – Ann Bowman, Estabrooks Floral Shop Gift Certificate – Karen Corson, Estabrooks Garden Store - Kim Hamilton, S tore School House Seconds Gift Certificate – Lynn Priest, Full Page Calendar Ad – Peter Rice, Chebeague Library Tote Bag – Lola Armstrong, CTC’s Red Guest Ticket Book – Mary Holt.

ECHO (Enterprise for Chebeague Housing Options) ECHO’smission is to provide, in creative and collaborativeways, housing opportunities to sustain a year-round community on Chebeague. We are in transparent conversations with the Chebeague Selectman, CICA, and the Island Institute. We heartily encourage community feedback, ideas, and participation.

ence operated from the commercial float in the interim. It appeared all was back to normal. The next morning, however, the ferry could not be started for the first run of the day, due to malfunctioning electrical systems. The first three trips of the day were cancelled until a crew from Royal River Boat Yard was able to make emer- gency repairs to get the Independence running again. Casco Bay Diesel, which has expertise in diagnosing problems with computerized engines, responded immediately to our call for help, knowing the vital service we provide. Their tech- nicians diagnosed the electrical gremlins and repair parts were ordered. In the meantime, our friends at Fogg’s Water Taxi arrived to cover our scheduled runs. We are grateful to everyone who stepped up to help – the CTC crew, the mechan- ics at Royal River Boat Yard and Casco Bay Diesel, and the crew at Fogg’s Water Taxi as well as local fishermen who helped get people back and forth when the ferry was down!

After almost two decades, the Stone Wharf dredge project has finally been completed. The Chebeague community can now look forward to the end of low tide service interruptions for the foresee- able future. Although the dredge and CTC crews worked together daily to provide almost uninterrupted service during the three-month project, there was a mishap. Sometime in the early morning of Sun- day, March 20, the dredge barge mal- functioned and went adrift, colliding with the Independence which was tied up at the Stone Wharf. The impact ripped out a bollard and decking from the ferry float, as well as causing dock lines to part. The ferry suffered some non-structural physical damage. The shore power cord, which was connected to the ferry and its sophisticated elec- tronics, fell into the water in the alision, damaging some electrical components on the boat. Repairs were made to the float by the dredge crew, with help from the Town’s public works team, and the Independ-

ANNUAL PARKING PERMIT FEES WERE DUE IN FULL ON MARCH 31 Any vehicle currently in CTC parking lots without a sticker will be subject to a daily parking fee and may be towed. If you need help getting your permit to your vehicle, please call the office immediately to avoid being towed! Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, CTC has priori- tized the health and safety of our employees and pas- sengers, adhering to all local and national CDC guidelines and mandates. With yester- day's ruling striking down the federal mask mandate and TSA's announcement they would no longer be enforcing masking on public transit, CTC, in staying in line with industry stand- ards, will end our mask mandate effective immedi- ately. The CDC still recom- mends people wear masks in indoor public transportation spaces, but going forward, it will be up to individuals to decide whether to wear a mask or not. The mandate may be reinstated at any- time, depending on CDC guidance and current states of the pandemic. Thanks to all our passengers and staff who have supported and complied with these man- dates as we have navigated our way through changing rules and guidelines... we couldn't have done it with- out you!

CTC is looking to fill the following posi- tions immediately! Part-time, year-round deckhands — Candidates must enjoy working with the pub- lic, working on the water and be willing to work some evening and weekend shifts. Part-time and fill-in bus drivers . Candi- dates must have a val- id Class B CDL with a passenger endorse- ment. Shifts are avail- able that will accom- modate Island resi- dents. CTC offers competitive pay and benefits. If you are interested, contact our office, or apply online. If you know someone who might be interested, please help us spread the word. We are only as good as the crew we have working with us. Come join this great team!

In the late 1930s, Doug Dyer was stand- ing near his father’s fish house above the ledges in Colemans Cove near the site of Western Landing. Thankfully, we are able to resume normal summer hours in 2022. Therefore, we are suspending our online shop—and encourage everyone to visit our 2022 exhibit “Growing Up on Chebeague.” Thank you for your sup- port—and a special thank you to Beth McNulty for her countless hours maintaining the online shop in the last two years.

CIHS ANNUAL MEETING The Historical Society’s Annual Member Meet- ing will be held on June 11th at 7 PM. Please join us at the Island Hall. After the business meeting, we are pleased to offer a presentation by Dr. Chuck Radis, author of “ Go by Boat: Stories of a Maine Island Doctor ”.
