Administrator, Amy Rich 207-846-5610 amy.rich@islandcommons.com

The Lyon’s Share The Commons thanks the family of Peg Lyons for their generous donation of the contents of Peg’s house on John Small Road. The gift was made in appreciation of the care Peg received from the Commons’ in- home care team prior to her death in October. An estate sale on Feb. 12 drew a large crowd (despite mud and ice) and provided Peg’s friends and neighbors with an opportunity to remember a generous islander and to also support the Island Commons. In the words of Peg’s daughter Amy, “The Island Commons has been so good to our family. Couldn’t have kept Mom on the island so long without them. Happy to give a little something back.”

The Red Studio will be bursting at the seams this summer, thanks to another generous donor, Linda White, whose gifts of furniture, antiques, art and china have been relocated to our favorite resale shop. Thank you, Linda. The Gift of Time… Some volunteers go above and beyond for the Commons, and Ann Thaxter is at the head of that class. Ann has been here every week, year in and year out, to help with chores that are, shall we say?... unglamorous. (We’re talking trash removal.) We truly appreciate your many years of dedication, Annie! A big thank you from all of us.

Join our care team at the Commons! Part-time work with elders in their homes (Chebeague Cares). Summer job opportunities to help with cooking and cleaning from 7am to 2pm. Always looking for CRMA’s for direct care at the Commons…full time, part time. Give Amy Rich a call at 846-5610

Do You have a personal project that you need help from and expert with? You may have a photo editing project or something else you’d like help with but with todays prices you think it’s out if the question. Maybe not. Sure, I like big projects, but I have lots of time to fill in between with small

projects. Check out my website at www.sharkeygraphics.com to see what I can do for you and call me (Craig) at 207-655-8668. I will always make time to talk about your dream or vision with no expectations. Please be sure to mention that you saw my ad here. -Craig Sharkey (Sharkey Graphic Solutions)

Notes From The Council

Despite the bitter cold, the snow, the ice and the high winds, the Chedemption volunteers aka the “Bagetts” have managed to get hundreds of bottles and cans off the Island and into recycling - and brought thousands of dollars back to the Island to help support the Island non-profits. At a time when non-profits are having to pay for many things that used to be done by volunteers, this hardy group is a reminder of the Island traditions that are the fabric of our Island community! Thank you. Don’t forget there is Soup to Go, another example of Island volunteers! Soup, a roll, and a dessert will be available on March 2nd and March 16th. If you can tap into your Luck of the Irish you will get one of

Ruth Slagel’s amazing desserts! If you would like to make a soup, bring rolls or bake a dessert please call Sarah Hopkins at 329-6538. We are hoping to return to eating lunch in the hall soon. ElizabethDoughtywill be doing another presentation on Friday, Mach 18 at 11:00AM. The focus will be on strength training. As we get back to more outdoor activities,it is important to start strengthening all those muscles that protect our joints, our backs, and improve our balance. Come learn some simple exercises that will make your Spring activities safer and more fun Wear comfortable clothes - and be ready to move!

Upcoming services and series: Wednesday, March 2 nd – Ash Wedneday begins the season of Lent, a time of intentional spiritual formation as we look to the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday. We receive ashes on our foreheads or the backs of our hands as a reminder that we are part of the dust of the earth – and just as things grow and die in the cycle of creation, we, too, have times of growth and times of decay. Join us at 5 PM (location TBD) for a Sunset Ash Wednesday Service.. Good Enough: Embracing the Imperfections of Life and Faith (March – April 10) – Many of us feel the need and pressure to “keep up,” “buck up,” “measure up,” and “build up” in our lives, in our careers, in our homes and even in our hobbies. And now as we ease back into a hopefully-post-ish-pandemic world, the exhaustion is real but the expectations are again creeping up, nudging us toward some vision of a “good life” defined by society that isn’t always realistic or even possible. Our series, based on Kate Bowler’s book Good Enough: 40ish devotionals for a life of imperfection , will help us breathe and embrace a faith that is good enough, which is good news in our hectic world!

Sundays at 3 PM, via Zoom – Book Study on My Grandmother’s Hands. FMI contact gjbrown58@gmail.com . Starts Feb 6 th .

Contact the church office and we can try for a second gathering. Even if you are just looking for others to companion you in your spiritual practice during Lent, you are more than welcome with us!

CHEBEAGUE ISLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY MARCH 2022

A great story about our February Mystery Photo We received great feedback from Ernie Burgess regarding our February Mystery Photo—and we thought we should share it. “The mystery photo is no mystery to me: it’s of the Springettes Beach fish houses. They be- longed to (from left to right): Fred Brewer; Carrol Hamilton; Ray and Alf Hamilton; Alger Burgess (my father); Will Johnson and later, Harry Mansfield; the Ross fish house used by Ernest Ross (my grandfather) and later by me.

The significance of the winter photo is that some of those men went winter fishing - also known as trawling. The photo includes a punt on the beach, indicating that it’s likely to be winter and the men would be busy baiting trawls, preparing to go long- lining for cod, haddock, cusk and hake. This involved raking mussels and pitching them into a punt or dory, then bringing them ashore to the fish house to shell. It was usually necessary to build a fire in the fish house wood stove while shelling the mussels and baiting the trawls - then again in the middle of the night to make sure the mussels weren’t frozen solid before leaving for the fishing grounds: Jeffery’s Ledge about 20 miles due south from Cape Elizabeth or on the edge of the fishing bottom, eight or ten miles from Halfway Rock. We would take the gear aboard around 8 or 10 o’clock pm. If the weather changed for the worse, we would bring the baited trawls back ashore to wait for a better fish day. I remember these fish houses and the men who owned and worked in them and fished from Springettes Beach because I was one of them for a short time when I was much younger.”

Editor’s note: Several of the East End fisherman also had fish houses on the back shore and used their Springettes fish houses in the winter.

Please feel free to share with us your memories of our Mystery Photos!

How I Got here

Have you met Pete Walker and Rachel Matusko, our most recent new neighbors on Chebeague Island? Pete and Rachel bought the house on South Road previously owned by Claire Ross and Chris Burgess. Rachel works as a Registered Nurse and is working towards her Nurse Practitioner license in Primary Care. She previously worked as a traveling nurse, allowing the couple to travel extensively throughout the country, settling at times in North Dakota and along the California coast. Pete was a Nuclear Engineer for the Navy at the Portsmouth Shipyard for five years before switching to a career in Sales Engineering for a software company. His job is remote. Pete and Rachel met at the University of Maine at Orono. Rachel is a native Mainer having grown up in Cape Elizabeth. Pete grew up in Wilton, Connecticut, and received his degree from Orono in Civil Engineering. The couple was looking to buy a house in the Southern Maine region when everyone else was doing the same. They found the house on Zillow, visited the island, and found it to be a good fit. Mowgli, their Pyrenees/Husky mix is especially pleased with the living situation. You may hear him as you walk by their house, but truly he is all bark, no bite.

Book StudyGroupwithGloria Brown Book Group returns with an 8-session study of Resmaa Menachem’s book: My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies.

Our plan is to meet weekly on Sunday afternoons at 3 o’clock for about an hour. As Covid recedes, we hope to move from the Zoom platform to a hybrid meeting, in-person at the library with a Zoom option.

Beginning Sunday, February 6 th , 3 PM via Zoom: meeting # 820 4556 3188 | password: 20152020 EVERYONE IS INVITED TO ATTEND FMI: gjbrown58a@gmail.com

From goodreads.com: In this groundbreaking work, therapist Resmaa Menakem examines the damage caused by racism in America from the perspective of body-centered psychology. He argues this destruction will continue until Americans learn to heal the generational anguish of white supremacy, which is deeply embedded in all our bodies. Our collective agony doesn’t just affect African Americans. White Americans suffer their own secondary trauma

as well. So do blue Americans—our police. This book paves the way for a new, body-centered understanding of white supremacy—how it is literally in our blood and our nervous system. It offers a step-by-step solution—a healing process—in addition to incisive social commentary.
