Notes From The Council

The Council is looking forward to offering Soup again! And on January 5 th Elizabeth Doughty will be doing a very timely and important workshop on Fall Prevention. A workshop focusing on teen mental health challenges is planned, combined with dinner and a question-and-answer opportunity with Janna Hobbs and Michael Hollander. It has been a long time since we have been able to gather to share a meal, new information, and reconnect

with our neighbors. The Hall’s new HEPA filters, along with distancing, masks except when eating, and being fully vaccinated make these events possible. The CART committee has made getting fully vaccinated, including boosters, easy. It is all available right here on the Island. Don’t miss this chance to protect yourself, your family, and your friends and neighbors – and have what you need to join everyone at the Hall!

How I Got Here Stephanie Hampton and Dick Schelling moved to Chebeague Island just before the COVID pandemic shut everything down in 2019. They had been frequent visitors to the island while residents of Portland and would tour the island by bicycle. A lovely mansard roof house on Firehouse Road caught their eye on their trips around the island. When the house came on the market, they bought it! Luckily, they were able to work remotely on Chebeague during the pandemic and continue to -- Stephanie is a legal compliance officer for Sun Life and Dick is a technical writer and graphic designer. Before living in Portland, the couple lived in Hanover, New Hampshire where they raised their four children.

Stephanie and Dick are artists and musicians, so they fit right in. They also came to Chebeague with an Ensign sailboat! How’s that for kismet?

Advent Worship Series – Those Who Dream There’s a line in Psalm 126: “When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream.” What does it look like to live as those who dream? What does it mean to step into God’s hopes and dreams for us – and for the world? The people and prophets we encounter in the Christmas story were all dreamers; they received, discovered, and responded to God’s dreams for the world. We’ll explore this in Advent, a season where we watch and wait with expectancy for God’s dreams to shape our reality.

I hope that this series speaks to the dreamer in all of us – those of us who dream of a better world, those of us who dream of comfort and peace, and even those of us who may have given up on our dreams. It’s for those of us whose dreams have been crushed and for those of us who show us that dreams take time. Join us as we dream alongside prophets and angels, Mary and the Magi. Stop by the sanctuary to pick up a daily Advent devotional, or email the church to receive a digital copy, and be sure to join us for worship!

Monthly Boxes from the Food Pantry The pandemic has redefined need – particularly for many who continue to find ways to minimize exposure and juggle mainland errands. Need isn’t just about economics – but about time, capacity, and access. The food pantry will be making monthly boxes available – roughly timed with the holidays – to help address some of this need. In addition, we remain committed to providing for those experiencing food insecurity and for those who are making meals for people in need of community support.

Chebeague Island Cemetery

Reclaiming Graves and Plots”’ The Town of Chebeague Island has requested that plot# 27 last burial date unknown whose owner of record was Sarah A. Franklin be reclaimed by the town in order to be added to the inventory of available cemetery plots. Should you feel that you have a lineal or collateral claim to the cemetery plot in question, please provide in writing, legal proof of lineal or collateral descent to the Superintendent of the Chebeague Island Cemetery, 192 North Road, Chebeague Island, ME 04017 on or before the 15 th of January 2022. If on receipt of the documentation and approval of the Superintendent and payment of perpetual care at current rates, a deed will be issued. If no claimant comes forward, this lot will be added to the cemetery inventory. *Town of Chebeague Island Cemetery Rules and Regulations Administration 7 g. Reclaiming graves or plots. The Town may reclaim plots or graves that have been abandoned for interment for 75 consecutive years or more. This involves a “substantial search” by advertising for existing heirs or devisees. If no owner can be found, then the cemetery may use up to one-half of the unoccupied lots [Title 13 MRSA subchapter VI, sec. 1381]. 3 Administration 2 e ... 2. If more than one person claims the lot through either lineal or collateral descent, all parties must prove their connection to the original owner of the lot by providing documentation. 3. Claimants must reach an amicable decision regarding use of the lot and file a written and signed agreement with the Town Clerk before a burial permit will be issued. 4. Should the parties not reach an agreement, the Town will not arbitrate, and the parties may pursue their claim through legal means. 3 Though the Statute refers to “perpetual care and maintenance”, this is not the issue here; it is abandonment. Chebeague has always provided care and maintenance, whether the owner of the plot has paid for perpetual care or not.

DECEMBER 2021 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND COUNCIL CALENDAR

Chebeague Fire and Rescue

Living on an island in the winter can be challenging for anyone, especially for those with advancing age. Despite all efforts to stay as independent as possible, aging rewards us with degenerating joints, reduced vision, and impaired hearing. Most people over age 65 develop at least one chronic health problem and many have several, usually requiring visits with health professionals and

prescription medications. Older adults are at higher risk of falls, strokes, and infection. While no one ever wants to go to the hospital, an older adult can have an injury or a health problem suddenly worsen, requiring a rescue call, and the need for emergency room services. Please plan ahead for the event of the rescue team coming to your home by following these recommendations:

1. Go on-line to https://www.vialoflife.com and fill in the form with your basic medical history, medications, allergies, health providers and emergency contacts. Post the form in the vial they provide. Put it on your refrigerator door so the rescue team can find it. 2. Talk to your family members or close friends and choose a health care proxy who can speak on your behalf if you are unable to speak for yourself. They need to know what your wishes are, and you should also complete an advance directive, so your wishes are in writing. It is extra helpful if you complete a “Physician Order for Life-Sustaining Treatment” (POLST) form with your PCP, where you can specify whether or not you would want to be put on a ventilator, or get resuscitated if your heart stops beating. This bright green form can go as well in the “Vial of Life” (see #1) on your refrigerator. 3. Put a list of things that need to go with you to the hospital such as dentures, hearing aids and glasses in the vial as well so these do not get left behind- the rescue team will do their best to have them go with you if they know you need them. 4. Organize a phone tree so that when one person is contacted, others are also informed so that your support network is activated in an emergency. 5. Move away any obstructions between the main door and the bedroom so that a stretcher can be brought though your home. Clear pathways also reduce the risk of falls. 6. Keep the information on your refrigerator updated as your health/ medications change. These recommendations are also helpful if you need to leave your home in a storm or power outage. Let’s all do our part to help each other stay as safe and healthy as possible. Ralph Munroe, Chief of Fire and Rescue.

Soup! The Chebeague Island Council will bring Soup Wednesdays back to the Hall in January! Given the COVID situation, we are asking that anyone cooking soup is fully vaccinated and that the soup be prepared in the Hall’s licensed kitchen. The weekly community meal is open to anyone who is vaccinated, although we will provide soup to go to anyone who is not vaccinated or is not comfortable dining in the Hall. There are new heat pumps to keep us warm, as well as HEPA air purification filters to help keep us safe. If you would like to help or have any questions, please call Sarah at 329-6538.
