Notes From The Council
The Council is happy to report that 112 islanders were able to get their Flu shot at our Annual Flu Clinic. That is up from 79 last year! Is it the convenience of having this available on the island or is it Mac and Beth’s homemade donuts? Thank you, Mac Passano and Beth Howe, for doing this year after year. They were delicious! The nights are getting colder and heating costs are going up. If you need help paying for home heating fuel, remember the Fuel Assistance Program is available to all Islanders. Fuel Assistance is available for all types of heating, - oil, propane, electric, or wood. Call Ester at 846-4178 and she will arrange delivery and payment directly to the supplier. Thanks to the generosity of the entire Island community, there is help available. And, if you need help, remember the Food Pantry is available as well. The Church and the Council work together to help individuals and families struggling with food insecurity through the Food Pantry, the Island version of Meals on Wheels, and Food Cards for Shaws or Hannaford for special dietary
needs. Call Ester to find the best way get the help you need. As you may be aware, blood draws on the mainland require an appointment and early morning appointments are often taken weeks in advance. If you need blood work done, especially first thing in the morning, the Maine Health nurse is here the second and fourth Tuesday of every month. No appointment needed. The nurse starts seeing people at 9:00AM. For faster care, please ask your doctor to send you the written order and bring your orders with you. If you don’t have written orders, the nurse can call your provider’s office. However, it may take a while to get that order confirmed. There is no fax machine available. All specimens are taken directly to Nordx. The nurse is also available to do blood pressure checks, dressing changes, suture removal, rapid strep tests, urine tests, and general nursing assessments. This service is available at no charge to patients and is sponsored by the Council.

We will be introducing this new system during the com- ing winter months while our passenger counts are at their lowest and our crew availa- ble to help. Thanks to all our passengers who have been so patient as we move away from the old system to an improved one, and thanks in advance for your patience as we implement a new system!
Since the beginning of the pandemic, CTC’s method of collecting tickets and fares has continued to evolve. Driven first by the need to ensure social distancing, these changes have proven to offer several significant advantages over the old sys- tem. During 2021, we have been working with a company called RocketRez, which is developing ticket systems for Casco Bay Lines and the Maine State Ferry. CTC has hired the company to also design a ticket system tai- lored to the specific needs of CTC and our passengers. The goal of the new system is more efficient collection

Thanks (again) to the Raymond Family Foundation! Earlier this year, the CIHS received a generous grant from the Raymond Family Foundation. The grant allowed us to upgrade our heating and air conditioning systems by installing heat pumps. In the process, we learned that we needed to do structural repairs. The Foundation offered to help with repairs with a $10,000 matching grant challenge. We ac- cepted the challenge and set a goal of raising $10,000 by September 30th. We met that goal—with 100% participation by the CIHS Board of Trustees and generous gifts from some community supporters. Many thanks to those who donat- ed—and especially to the Raymond family!

Reclaiming Graves and Plots* The Town of Chebeague Island has requested that plot #14 last burial date empty whose owner of record was Joseph Gordon Wilson be reclaimed by the town in order to be added to the inventory of available cemetery plots. Should you feel that you have a lineal or collateral claim to the cemetery plot in question, please provide in writing, legal proof of lineal or collateral descent to the Superintendent of the Chebeague Island Cemetery, 192 North Road, Chebeague Island, ME 04017 on or before the 15 th of December, 2021 . If on receipt of the documentation and approval of the Superintendent and payment of perpetual care at current rates, a deed will be issued. If no claimant comes forward, this lot will be added to the cemetery inventory. *Town of Chebeague Island Cemetery Rules and Regulations Administration 7 g. Reclaiming graves or plots.
The Town may reclaim plots or graves that have been abandoned for interment for 75 consecutive years or more. This involves a “substantial search” by advertising for existing heirs or devisees. If no owner can be found, then the cemetery may use up to one- half of the unoccupied lots [Title 13 MRSA subchapter VI, sec. 1381]. 3 Administration 2 e 2. If more than one person claims the lot through either lineal or collateral descent, all parties must prove their connection to the original owner of the lot by providing documentation. 3. Claimants must reach an amicable decision regarding use of the lot and file a written and signed agreement with the Town Clerk before a burial permit will be issued. 4. Should the parties not reach an agreement, the Town will not arbitrate, and the parties may pursue their claim through legal means. 3 Though the Statute refers to “perpetual care and maintenance”, this is not the issue here; it is abandonment. Chebeague has always provided care and maintenance, whether the owner of the plot has paid for perpetual care or not.
