Notes From The Council

These beautiful Fall days are some of best Island days, but we all know what is ahead. The Council has been busy preparing for the Flu Clinic. Last year we had a record number of participants and by the time this newsletter is in your mailbox the 2021 Flu Clinic will have happened, Mac and Beth’s delicious donuts will be gone, and the volunteers who worked hard to make it run smoothly will be able to relax. Thanks to all who, once again, helped to make sure as many Islanders as possible have a healthier winter. The Council will soon have a HEPA filter system in the Wellness

Center as part of a building wide effort to make the Community Center a safer place to go while COVID continues to be a concern. Dr. Larson and the Maine Health Care at Home nurses will continue to make health care available on the Island. Unfortunately, the Council had to put several of out Fall plans on pause due to COVID transmission rates in our area. Currently the workshop on home safety and fall prevention with Elizabeth Doughty, Wednesday Soup, and the annual USM Health Screening are on hold. Hopefully, these all will be back on the schedule soon!

Administrator, Amy Rich 207-846-5610 amy.rich@islandcommons.com

We sadly bid goodbye to our dear friend, mentor, and advisor Virginia Ballard . Ginny was with The Commons since the very beginning, and volunteered countless hours serving as our physician’s assistant. No one could better express what Ginny meant to us than our administrator, Amy Rich:

“Ginny was my beacon of light who guided me for 14 years. She was a hero, a selfless leader, our champion, and a true guardian angel on earth. I’m better for having known her, and the world was better place with her in it. They say you can’t teach compassion, but that’s exactly what Ginny did. She was all our example.”

Thank you to all who have made a donation to Island Commons in Ginny’s memory. She would be pleased to know your gifts will help us carry on her legacy of loving, compassionate care at Island Commons.

Book Group In person at the Library and via Zoom at 6 PM We’ll begin with a deeper dive into one of our summer books: Dancing in God’s Earthquake: The Coming Transformation of Religion by Rabbi Arthur Ocean Waskow

Here is a book of deep wisdom from a prophetic rabbi who has for fifty years worked to promote a progressive spirit of renewal that connects Jews, Christians, and people of other faiths. We all experience earthquakes in our lives--social, personal, religious. From those earthquakes renewal and new life can come forth if we learn to dance in the midst of the earthquake. –Amazon Book Group in person at the Library and... Notes from the Hall

The Hall’s annual meeting occurs at 5:30 p.m. on October 21. Please sign and return the proxy so that we may continue our mission of supporting our community. Proxies will also be available at the Library, Doughty’s Island Market, and the boatyard. We are eager to welcome new board members Binkie Boxer, Dylan Doughty, and Cyrus McLean. Dylan and Cyrus will head up our new entertainment committee with plans to keep the community engaged and having fun. HALLoween costume party for grownups with live entertainment and adult beverages anyone? UMaine reunion? Island jam night? They are looking for suggestions and maybe a little help to plan some evening events throughout the year. We had a wonderful if quiet summer, with numerous events, including our own Martha Hamilton Arts and Crafts Extravaganza. We had so much fun and redistributed so many crafting and fine arts treasures that we are doing it again next summer, so save your donations until the spring when we can store the bounty properly! We also had several wonderful musical evenings, with many more expected during the coming months, including the return of the Whalers and the kids’ plays and concerts. Please tell us what you want to see happening at the Hall. The Community Center has had an eventful summer, learning how to respond to an everchanging, seemingly never ending pandemic. Thank you for your continuing patience as we evolve to meet each new challenge. We have installed HEPA air purifiers in each portion of the building, which can purify 5,000 cubic feet of air in 30 minutes. This means that each portion of the building can have up to four turnovers of air per hour. According to the manufacturer’s website, each unit is “[e]quipped with 4-stage filtration and deodorization… to target the smallest and dirtiest particles through the use of an advanced and proprietary fiber material. An activated carbon filter reduces VOCs [volatile organic compounds] and odors, while a negative ion generator weighs down airborne particles so that they’re easier to capture.” We hope the installation of these filters will allay patrons’ fears about the air quality in the building.

Dr. Zack, of the Yarmouth Veterinary Clinic , will continue his visits on the first Thursday of each month. The sign-up sheet will go up on the front door of the Community Center around 8:00 a.m., and the first appointments start around 8:45. As a reminder, you cannot designate a specific time for your appointment nor can you wait inside the foyer (last month, someone or someone’s pet pooped on the rug in the foyer—sorry, Cindy). Instead, please wait outside or in your cars, and the vet will come outside to call you in when he is ready for you. If there are no sign-up slots left, call Sam (846-0510) because Dr. Zack is sometimes able to stay until the 2:00 p.m. boat to accommodate all his customers. Although the Hall may look quiet right now, we remain busy trying to put the finishing touches on the interior, with new Roman shades, HEPA air purifiers, and a few final accessories for the audiovisual system. Don’t forget to ask for a hearing-assist device at the next meeting or event, as we have numerous sets available. Once again, we are grateful to Chip Emery for the many hours he has spent and continues to devote to managing our new audiovisual system and to the Recompense Fund for helping underwrite the considerable cost of this equipment.

summer months and a drier environment for the books (and book lovers) all year round.

Please come admire our newly finished garden borders. Many thanks to Erin Whetham for her delicate and detailed design. We plan to install a new bike rack soon as well as some comfy outdoor chairs and tables to encourage you to linger with a book or your laptop or a friend and enjoy the garden. We are trying to create new ways of engaging our community through fun get togethers, seminars, and health-promoting events, while not neglecting our well-loved services, such as Drs. Heidi and Rybka, children’s story time, and—fingers crossed— Wednesday coffee and soup. If you have ideas for an event, please contact a member of one of our boards. Remember, we are all here to serve our island community.

In addition, the Library is installing heat pumps this month, meaning that there will finally be air conditioning during the

OCTOBER 2021 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND COUNCIL CALENDAR

From The Town office

Dear Chebeague Island Community: As you may have heard, several members of the Chebeague Island community have tested positive with COVID-19. As I write this letter, we are aware of 6 positive cases. If more than 3 cases are linked to several households, the CDC will investigate to determine if this is an outbreak with community spread. The highly contagious Delta variant is currently the main strain of COVID-19 affecting the entire United States. It is responsible for the spike in COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the summer. According to the CDC, the Delta variant may cause more than twice as many infections and causes more severe illness in unvaccinated people. The most contagious period is two-days before a person tests positive or shows symptoms, however many cases may have no symptoms and are still contagious. As part of the testing protocol done by the volunteer island testing team, people with positive cases are advised to be in touch with their primary care provider (PCP). Folks who are positive are also expected to be in quarantine. In addition, anyone testing positive is advised to immediately notify any people they’ve been in contact with in the last two days (also known as contact tracing) as soon as they test positive. Ill persons should isolate until test results return as well as symptoms lessen, and follow the advice of their PCP. Vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, and J & J) are still highly effective in preventing Delta variant infections and serious health outcomes, including death. Approximately 95% of the current COVID-19 cases in Maine are affecting unvaccinated people. Of the 44,000 COVID cases in Maine since the introduction of the vaccines, only 2246 have been breakthrough infections. The chance of a vaccinated person contracting COVID-19 from an encounter with an infected person is 1 in 5000. However, as of today, our current COVID-19 cases are “breakthrough” cases hitting vaccinated islanders. So far, COVID-19 infections for vaccinated people are known to be much less severe, shorter lasting, and transmissible for a shorter period of time. In most cases, the symptoms of breakthrough cases can be managed at home. The good news is, according to the Maine CDC, more than 95% of eligible residents in 04017 are vaccinated. With our high rate of vaccination, our fast-response CCTT team and the actions of those who tested positive— the current situation could likely have had more dire consequences. Thank you to the residents for protecting each other.

So, what is the best thing you can do today to minimize your risk of “getting it or spreading it”? 1. get vaccinated (12+ years old) 2. wear a mask indoors in public spaces (or when you don’t know the status of those around you) 3. maintain social distancing (including in outdoor gatherings) 4. contact your PCP if you have symptoms or think you were exposed and get tested 5. contact anyone you had close contact with in the 48 hour window around any COVID-19 6. symptoms or if you have gotten a positive test result If you cannot reach your PCP, you may also contact our volunteer Chebeague Covid Testing Team (CCTT), Jenny Hackel, NP at 734- 660-3461 or Nancy Hill, RN at 207-712-3184. Our testers have PCR and rapid tests for those who have been exposed and for those who have symptoms. You may also make an appointment for drive-through testing at the Walgreens in Yarmouth or obtain your own over-the-counter. Remember, if you do experience COVID-19 symptoms and test positive for COVID-19, it is important that you isolate, even from those in your household. This can be hard, but it is important. Secondly, you should notify everyone you were in contact with as soon as possible so they can test, isolate and recover. Additional information on what to do if you test positive can be found on the Maine CDC webpage located here. CDC guidelines recommend wearing a mask indoors in areas of substantial or high transmission. Masks work best when everyone wears one. A cloth or disposable mask offers some protection but a KN95 mask offers the highest level of protection. The Town is making KN95 masks available to all community members at the Town Office, Rec Center and Library. As I write this letter, every county in Maine is currently facing the Delta variant’s impact.Wearing a mask, even if you are vaccinated, will maximize protection from the Delta variant and will minimize the spread to others (including when you are outdoors and could be in close contact with those who are not fully vaccinated). Please continue to practice physical distancing with those who are not in your household or pod. As we move into the fall and winter let’s all do our part; stay vigilant, follow best practices, and be kind to one another. Sincerely, Justin L. Poirier Town Administrator

How I Got Here

The desire to see puffins was what brought Katie Urich to Chebeague Island last spring. Thank goodness for puffins! Katie was living in southeast Pennsylvania and wanted a change. She was eager to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and live closer to nature. As she researched where to see puffins and the geography of Maine, she stumbled upon Chebeague Island; its beauty, and its strong community. Katie has a fascinating resume: she was a Children’s Librarian; an Americorps volunteer in Central Florida; and an English language teacher in Peru. Katie also put her Theater degree to work by teaching drama to children and adults and performing as a jazz vocalist. Katie was hired by the Chebeague Island Recreation Center to work at the Kids’ Place as an Assistant Preschool Teacher. She finds the children of Chebeague to be particularly observant and aware of their surroundings, as well as delightfully well-adjusted.
