Notes From The Council

The Chebeague Island Council is excited to present the annual Fourth of July Parade. After the year we have had, we deserve a grand celebration! “COVID Made Me Do It!” is this year’s theme. What did COVID make YOU do? As the winner of the parade theme contest, Piper Allison will be invited to shop at School House Seconds before the rest of the patrons at the Grand Opening on Tuesday, July 6. There will be awards for the best girls’ and boys’ bikes, costumes, tractors, golf carts, and floats. It is only fitting that the Grand Marshal of this year’s parade is Billy St. Cyr. Billy and his team have delivered more packages throughout the pandemic than anyone could have ever imagined. We want to honor Billy and all the work he does for our community! New this year will be an online pre-registration for parade participants which will allow us to get numbers out early and simplify the muster. Kel Haney and Michael Grew did not plan on living on Chebeague. Neither one grew up here or was a “summer complaint”. They did not come here to visit friends, play golf, eat at the Inn or stop in at the Boat Yard to resupply. Theirs is a more serendipitous tale. Kel had been coming to Maine for years, staying with family friends in Ocean Point. One summer she was looking for a place to stay while waiting to meet up with her family. She wanted a place that was accessible to someone without a car, a quiet place where she could get some work done, and maybe a bit of an adventure. She saw an ad for a place on Chebeague and was soon settled in at the Holt’s. Her first stop was the Library, and it did not take long before she felt the magic of Chebeague. About ten years passed. Kel brought her boyfriend, Michael to Chebeague. He was equally drawn to the Island. They came whenever they could. They made friends. They came to appreciate the rhythm of island life. By the summer of 2018 they are in the Hill’s back yard getting married, exactly where Michael had purposed! But they still had to return to their lives and jobs in NY City. They were able to arrange to be here for a month in August of 2019. Then came COVID and they knew it was time to leave NY and move to Chebeague. They came in May of 2020, thinking they would be here for the summer, then for the winter, and now for good. Chebeague, Maine is now their legal residence, and they couldn’t be happier.

We will keep track of CDC guidelines and checklists and pass along the information to the community as it may relate to the parade. More information and updates will be posted on Chebeague.org, Chebweb.com, and Facebook pages. We look forward to celebrating with you on the 4 th ! This will be the first summer using CLYNK for Chedemption. So far it has been running smoothly. The sign-up sheets have gone out to the non -profits, along with the checks for their $600.00 “earnings” for working their week in the summer. You do not need to be a member or on a non -profit Board to volunteer! Please call the non-profit of your choice and sign up for a couple of hours. The new CLYNK system is so much easier than the old banana boxes. Please help keep these returnable out of the waste stream!

How I Got Here

They made this move at a difficult time. None of the usual Island activities were happening. Winter on the Island can be isolating in the best of times. Even the Library was closed. But Kel jumped right in, working at the Food Pantry, and becoming a volunteer at the Red Studio. They adopted a Maine “rescue” puppy, Ella. They started new careers working remotely. They made it through this difficult year. They are home now.

Summer Office Hours Monday - Friday 9am - 4pm

The good weather seems to final- ly have arrived, and with it, so have our seasonal residents. For many, this will be their first time back to the island in over a year. Welcome back! This summer, CTC is operating with some new procedures. Tick- ets for the ferry must be pur- (chebeaguetrans.com) or by call- ing our office. We are not selling tickets on the boat. Tickets are collected prior to boarding the ferry. You must have a ticket or have purchased tickets prior to boarding! Please wait at the top of the ramp for the deckhand to welcome you to board. Some things remain the same. Summer on Chebeague = Pas- sengers+Freight. When you have a large amount of freight to bring to the Island, please consider either using Casco Bay Lines’ very convenient freight service or delivering the freight to the Cousins Island pier in your own vehicle before returning to the Route 1 lot to park and catch the bus. Our busses have very lim- ited room for freight. chased in advance, either through our online store

We welcome pets on our busses and ferries. Please remember, they are required to have tickets, too! Also, please make sure dogs remain under control, on a leash and not on the seats. We’ve had some close calls with excited dogs nearly knocking small chil- dren over… not something any- one wants to happen! Our bus drivers and captains are expected to leave on schedule. Please plan accordingly to arrive with plenty of time for unloading and parking. Use caution when driving to the Stone Wharf, driv- ing in our Cousins lot and to the pier on Cousins Island. These are all very congested places with lots of pedestrians and small children walking around. Once on the pier, please stand back from the ramp to allow dis- embarking passengers room to get by. The boat crew will load freight and call people with bicy- cles down first. We are excited to see everyone coming back. We wish everyone a safe and happy summer!

New Monthly and Annual passes availa- ble starting June1! We are excited to begin offering both monthly and annual ferry passes to year- round and summer residents beginning June 1. These passes offer the best value and convenience for our passengers using our service regular- ly. We will issue a photo ID that pass holders will be re- quired to show the deckhand when boarding the ferry. Please call the office for details on how to purchase these passes.

JUNE 2021 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND COUNCIL CALENDAR

Community Matters

Dear Chebeague residents and visitors,

for public transportation. The CCTT strongly encourages people coming to Chebeague Island to please be vaccinated first.

The Chebeague Covid-19 Test Team (CCTT) has concluded that it is time to disband our on-island testing services. We have been pleased to serve the island’s needs for viral and rapid testing, Covid-19 general information, vaccination, and local outreach. The CCTT team was set up to help anyone with symptoms to find out if they had Covid-19, avoid a trip to the mainland, and reduce the risk of spreading Covid-19. The CCTT was created early in the pandemic when testing sites were just opening. We are happy to report that the work of the team has resulted in nearly 400 tests, and there were only rare, isolated, cases of Covid 19 on Chebeague despite a serious spike in the pandemic on the mainland. After our testing was up and running, we partnered with the Rec Center, CART and Maine CDC to offer four on-island vaccine clinics. We vaccinated more than one hundred people on-island. The creation of the voluntary vaccine registry helped us learn that, as of today, about 80% of Chebeague residents have received a Covid-19 vaccine. We have coordinated with other island organizations, particularly the CTC, in support of stricter protocols

The need for our services iswaning, thus the CCTTwill be disbanding as of Thursday morning, May 27th. The team is accepting requests for tests up to that time and some testing events may be set up thereafter depending on volunteer availability. We are pleased to see that testing on the mainland is much more accessible with nearly 50 testing options in Cumberland County. To locate a nearby testing site, you can easily access info at the Maine CDC website: https://www.maine.gov/covid19/keepmainehealthy/testing.

Also, to find out about vaccination sites, click this link: https:// www.maine.gov/covid19/vaccines

Thank you everyone - including all the CART and CCTT volunteers, and especially to Melissa Yosua-Davis who led the way to secure a generous Recompense grant to fund the CCTT. Under Melissa’s leadership, and with the fiscal sponsorship from the island church, this endeavor was made possible.

With gratitude, Jenny Hackel, NP 734-660-3461

It is a great time to Plan Ahead. Have you been considering buying or selling your home? Let our team guide you on the island and the mainland! Contact us to find out why this is the best time to sell. SPRING IS HERE!

Thank You Notes

Dear Friends, The Brewer Family wants you all to know how much we appreciated all the prayers, kind thoughts,

flowers, cards,and food that you gave us during my recovery from surgery. When someone is down and out Chebeague always comes to the rescue. Love to all, Diane, Hartley, Sally, Pam and Keith

Once again, I can testify to the friendly, gentle care of our Rescue team. All the stress of the operation is muted by these wonderful people. Thank you, Doug, Denise and Martha! With appreciation -Susie Stavropoulos

Many Thanks From Dianne Calder & Family Thank you all for your prayers, love, cards, calls and support for Mom (Dianne). We really appreciate every single one of them! As most of you know Mom is living in long term care at The Cedars in Portland. She continues to have PT, OT and a little cognitive assistance. The caregivers are amazing there. After her last “stay” at the hospital things were a little bit mixed up, but she’s pretty much back to her old self. She is enjoying being back “home” and looking forward to me bringing in a few things from her house on the island to decorate her room right up. She misses Chebeague of course and thinks about all the wonderful people down there and talks about it all the time. Sending a huge thank you to all and take care.

Sunday, June 13th 4PM Dancing in God's Earthquake: The Coming Transformation of Religion by Rabbi Arthur Ocean Waskow

Here is a book of deep wisdom from a prophetic rabbi who has for fifty years worked to promote a progressive spirit of renewal that connects Jews, Christians, and people of other faiths. We all experience earthquakes in our lives--social, personal, religious. From those earthquakes renewal and new life can come forth if we learn to dance in the midst of the earthquake. –Amazon

~~~ Sunday, July 18, 4 PM Subversive Jesus by Craig Greenfield
From craiggreenfield.com: "You might think that Jesus' most subversive teachings should be systematically laid out in a theological textbook. With plenty of dull footnotes. But Jesus knows well that we are people of story and grit. We need to see theological ideas in messy human form so they can spark something real in our imagination. We need to see other people screw up so we can laugh or weep and then imagine that we might dare to risk failure too. Subversive Jesus is the story of [the author and family’s] experiment in putting the most counter-cultural teachings of Christ into practice. … This adventure takes us from the slums of
Cambodia to inner city Canada and back again. Allow our journey to inspire your own. Allow Jesus to subvert what you think you already know. And you'll find that this book becomes an invitation to say yes to this subversive Jesus and do something courageous with your life - for the sake of justice, mercy, and faithfulness in a broken world."
