Notes From The Council

The Council membership notices are in the mail. Please join us in support of the Council’s efforts to help the Community we all love - from Thrift Shop to Recycling, Health Care to the Calendar, Fuel Assistance to the 4 th of July Parade, while supporting Chebeague Cares and the Island Meals on Wheels. Now is the time to check to make sure your tetanus shot is up to date. Please contact the Council at 846-4988 if it is time to get that updated.

We are all looking forward to the opening of the Community Center. The Council has some great Programs planned and we will have a “coffee and muffins” hour for everyone to meet Elizabeth Doughty, the Island’s own Physical Therapist! We will have the Foot Care Clinics back this summer and, of course, Dr Rybka will be here soon (June 23 rd )). C.D.C. guidelines must still be followed and we are confident we can find a way to stay safe and still continue to bring services to the Island Community.

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC? Fare/Rate Changes Effective June 1

May Office Hours Monday - Friday 9am - 4pm

Effective June 1, a new CTC fare schedule will go into effect. These fares include several new purchase options and retain one that has proven popular with our regular riders. The new fares will allow CTC to continue to cover our cost of operations and provide safe and reliable transportation for our community. The new fare plan includes: Monthly resident pass. This heavily discounted pass was extremely popular among our year-round passengers, who were hardest hit by our reductions in service. The weekly commuter book ($30, or $120 a month) will be eliminated. In place of weekly commuter tickets, the new monthly pass ($130) will allow unlimited travel from Chebeague throughout the month, workdays and weekends. Annual resident pass. This new fare option ($1,430), which a number of our commut- ers and regular riders have requested, allows unlimited travel from the date of pur- chase until the first day of the same month of the following year. Assuming a 50- week work week and round-trip travel each workday, the ticket price with this pass drops to $2.86. Resident/parking tickets: The price will increase $1 from the current $39 for 10 trips, to $40. Children/pet/bike tickets: Individual,($3) round trip($5) and 20 ride book($25) prices have not changed but now include bicycles. The prices of a 10-ride ticket book ($60), round-trip adult fare ($18) and round-trip child/pet ticket ($5) will remain unchanged. CTC has endeavored to devise a fare schedule that responds to the suggestions of our cus- tomers and also to hold price increases to the lowest possible levels while ensuring that CTC remains a financially healthy company, able to serve the needs of the Chebeague communi- ty year-round. Tickets that incorporate the new purchase options will be available online at www.chebeaguetrans.com June 1.

Business Office: (207) 846-5227/846- 3700 16 North Road, PO Box 27 6am Monday or holi- days, so please drop passengers off at the top of the hill during those times. Bus Capacities Remain very lim- ited The safety of our passengers and em- ployees continue to remain our highest priority. Adhering to state and federal guidelines, the pas- senger capacities on our bus remain very reduced. In order for our busses not to have to make multi- ple trips, customers are encouraged to drop passengers off at our Cousins Is- land parking lot. New book: Reading the Bible from the Margins by Miguel De La Torret This introduction to “liberation theology” focuses on how issues involving race, class, and gender influence our understanding of the Bible. Describing how “standard” readings of the Bible are not always acceptable to people or groups on the “margins,” this book offers valuable new insights into biblical texts today.

Disafilliation Update On Sunday, February 21 st , the charge conference of the Chebeague United Methodist Church voted to pursue disaffiliation from the United Methodist Church and enter into negotiations with the New England Conference. As of April 1 st , 2021, we have a signed Disaffiliation Agreement with the New England Conference of the UMC. At the next New England Conferense session (June 10-12, 2021), our resolution to disaffliate will go before the body. After that vote, we aim to separate from the UMC

Our website, http://www.chebeagueumc.org/disaffiliation.html, has all the latest information about where we are in this project. During this process, we are both separating from the United Methodist Church and creating our own church structures, by-laws, policies, and procedures that will move us forward as a congregation and serve the needs of our island community. Marty’s Memories - Being On The Island By Marty Trower

Winter is beating on the island again, just to be mean. May was waiting politely on the horizon, just yesterday dropping its yellow petals of warmth on our doorsteps. And that night I saw red across my face in the mirror when I hadn’t thought I would need sunscreen yet. I felt sure that the next day those spring bulbs would explode into glory out of the brown. Instead their growing heads are being pulled and buffeted by a cruel quirk of nature. Nevertheless, I do love being here all year round to experience each one of these extremes. Of course the in-between subtleties are just as compelling. One of my favorites, the winter sea fog, is as rare and exciting for me as seeing the Aurora Borealis. I want it all in my life, all the time. I remember, before I became a year round resident, always feeling edgy and anxious when I was on the mainland on spectacular days and only wanted to be here, on Chebeague. I remember my

old friend Sharon Bowman and I commiserating as we met up on the CTC bus after the terrible news of September 11 th , 2001. This was before we both ended up back living on the island all the time - a return for her, a first, and a dream for me. At this time we both felt this terrible fear that we struggled to put into words. We soon realized that the bottom line was that we desperately wanted to get back and be on the island, and stay there for whatever happened. I can only imagine how it is for those who could not come to the island last year because of the Covid 19 pandemic. They won’t feel quite right, really, until they can be here again on the island. Winter will not swoop in again this season, I feel sure. Already there are large expanses of green on the ground and daffodils and forsythia are throwing their hot colors up at us. The ferry is running on a better schedule, we wear our masks as easily as ball caps and we miss our friends from away.

SAM BIRKETT, REALTOR®

I have joined Portside Real Estate Group, a local company with a passion for giving back to the community. I will be available at our Yarmouth office, as well as right here on Chebeague! I have lived on Chebeague for 34 years and look forward to serving the community’s real estate needs. I am here to help you navigate your way through the process , whether buying or selling- on island or off the island!
