Community Matters - Chandler Preserve

Have you noticed the Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust markers recently placed on trees along South Road going towards Chandler’s Beach? This is the Chandler Preserve, a 9.6 acre property donated by Toby and StacieWebb in December or 2019 to CCLT. This parcel contains wildlife, forest, a stream, and wetlands. Between 1842-1896, a portion of the land was home to the West End School. When the school fell into disrepair, a new West End School was built across the road at the corner of School House and South Road. School children would play during recess on the Chandler Preserve parcel. Binky Boxer’s mother told stories of playing there at the “jumping off place,” as some called it. Children also called the woods “Old Dixie” according to Donna Damon. For now, The Chebeague and Cumberland Land trust plans to continue the parcel’s present- day use as a protected habitat for plant and animal species, water quality and watershed protection, carbon sequestration, and for the mitigation of climate change, as well as for year-round public access for recreation. Thank you, Toby and Stacie Webb, for this generous donation!

IMPORTANT NOTICE! Grant Applications to the Recompense Fund are due by April 30, 2021. This is a month earlier than last year, allowing grant funds to be sent to Island nonprofits sooner than in the past. Applicants who would like feedback in advance of final submission should also submit their draft application to recompensefund@gmail.com by April 15, 2021. A Recompense team will provide comments by April 23 rd . All grants will be reviewed and awarded before Memorial Day. Thank you to all our donors, your generosity during these challenging times is exceptional, and we thank each and every one of you! CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC?

Winter Office Hours Monday - Thursday 9am - 4pm Friday 9am-12pm

Stay Safe while Traveling with CTC!

Commuter Parking Spaces At the Cousins Is- land parking lot there is a designated area for commuter parking from No- vember 1st to March 31st. Only vehicles that have the com- muter sticker may park in the designat- ed areas. Others parking in the desig- nated area may be towed. Cousins Island Lot Many people who normally commute are not which has continued to make space extremely tight in the Cousins Lot. We ask that households that were issued two Cousins stickers to please move one car to the Route 1 lot if they are not regu- larly commuting right at this time.

The Chebeague Transportation Company continues to make the safety of our employ- ees and passengers our highest priority. In doing so, we continue to operate under pro- tocols created to keep everyone as safe as possible during the Covid-19 pandemic. This is a reminder of the guidelines. Boarding times: Passengers will not be allowed on board any earlier than ten minutes prior to departure. This allows the crew to disinfect the boat, complete ticket preparation, do safety drills and other tasks. It also limits their (and passengers’) expo- sure to each other. Please do not board the ferry until instructed to do so by the crew. Masks or cloth face coverings are required to be worn at all times on our ferries, busses and on the piers used to access our ferry. All passengers should practice social dis- tancing . This means maintaining a 6-foot distance when possible from anyone not in your household while on the ferry and while waiting to board. Tickets need to be bought prior to boarding the ferry, either through the office or our online store (chebeaguetrans.com). This al- lows minimal close interaction between crew and passengers, following CDC guidance. Our Charge Sheets should not be used in place of tickets! Repeated abuse of charge sheet privilege may result in a refusal of service. Windows and/or doors will be opened on the boat and the bus when it does not put the safety of the crew or passengers at risk. The CDC identifies ventilation and air ex- change as crucial to preventing transmis- sion of the virus. In alignment with state requirements and

CDC guidelines for public transportation, we continue to operate with Reduced Pas- senger Capacity . Thanks to an exemption given by the Coast Guard, we are able to open our upper deck without the required upper deckhand as long as we keep our pas- senger capacity at 32. This allows more out- door space for people to ride safely. Our Bus Boarding Procedure at our Rt. One parking lot and Cousins has been im- plemented in an effort to minimize close contact between passengers and drivers. Per CDC guidelines for public transporta- tion, if you are feeling ill, you should not travel. If someone who is sick must travel, they should make every effort to isolate themselves in an outside area of our ferry. Call your health care provider before travel- ing to seek medical care. Please remember COVID-19 Testing is being done on the island. We are still operation under our Reduced Ferry Schedule, both to maintain resilien- cy of operations in limiting our daily crew exposure and in an effort to decrease the cost of our operation. Following Governor Mill’s order, people, including Maine residents, who have trav- elled outside the state, excepting New Hampshire and Vermont, are required to either quarantine for 10 days upon enter- ing Maine or have a recent (within 72 hours) negative Covid-19 test. People returning to quarantine may use our ferry service to get to their quarantine location but must not use it again until either receiving a negative test or completing the quarantine period. Our dedicated staff are frontline workers in this pandemic - thanks for helping them keep Chebeague safe!

Marty’s Memories - The Walks

The walks are more important now that I am totally serious about staying on the island. Yesterday, trotting down toward East End point I could almost feel the eggshell thin membrane of my ‘bubble’. The air held the usual canopy of damp, the cold, just hanging there ready to drop and penetrate. The route was familiar, hardly changed from the last time we walked it a few days before. Yet we always silently looked for differences to mention, subtle things like the blurry tinges of color from the red winterberries pulsating on spindly bare branches, there beside the road. So quiet, like the second before you take a breath until a crash of frantic rushing birds landed on and dominated the whole top of a huge tree just ahead of us. Unidentified, this mass of crackling, hissing, squawking and complaining took our attention. My walking mate and I looked at each other, watching, mouths agape, mystified about where they had come from and why they were making such a fuss. Breaking into this eerie atmosphere, I said “Would we have noticed that or lingered to figure it out before the pandemic?” Norah, my old childhood friend now, like me, living year round on the island, replied “No, we wouldn’t have, I’m sure.” One car eases onto the road, then another from the other direction and soon there are people emerging from their houses and we are sporatically interacting and mingling. We are commenting on how long people’s hair has gotten as we swap tips for getting provisions here without crossing the great divide. It’s airy chat but it’s about what we all share so it feels significant and fun. We break off and return to the momentum we had begun.

We always walked around the island as a family years ago. I can’t help but remember the time my parents and I walked along Firehouse road in the spring and we came across Bill Hodge walking his beloved Airedale dog. I wish I could remember his name. He was the pride and joy of Bill and his wife Evelyn who lived in the house on Springette’s road now belonging to the Mary and Lew Holman. We were stopped right at Clyde and Geneva’s home where their adult son, Marshall Bowen, kept all sorts of animals. Bill Hodge said “Lets go see Marshall’s new horse, shall we?” The beautiful long nosed animal, well-loved and friendly, came to greet us at his half door. Before we had a chance to reach out and stroke the velvety face he offered us, the Airedale sprung up off all fours and in one horrifying instant snapped off a chunk of flesh just above the horse’s nostrils! In the melee of scolding and chasing that followed, the Airedale took off after Marshall’s pet goose and chased him into the woods. The poor goose limped out of the woods with a broken wing drooping to the ground. Marshall was understandable agitated. The next day when my mother went over on the nine o’clock water taxi she looked across the seats and saw a worried Bill Hodge holding the goose under his arms, protecting its wing on his way to the veterinary hospital.

Walking the island is always a pleasure whether an adventure or an inspiration from nature, an opportunity to be grateful for.
