the fireplace built, and the benches were put in place. Rumor has it that the benches came from the Church. Or were they built by some talented Islander? It was around this time that Sanford and Mabel began collecting returnable bottles and cans, first along the road, then at Chandler’s Field (always a popular gathering spot!). The project grew and lots folks started bringing their returnables to Sanford and Mabel. Sanford regularly took them all to the mainland redemption center and used the money to improve the Pond, the Shelter and even purchased a skate sharpener! Over the years many volunteers have worked hard to ensure that the ice is safe, cleared, the warming shelter is open, and the lights are on. Now, thanks to the generosity of Jackie Trask and her family, Sanford’s Pond has been offered as a gift to the Cumberland and Chebeague Island Land Trust. This generous act carries on Sanford’s and Mabel’s lifelong tradition of giving so much to the Chebeague community. And this means the magic of skating on Sanford’s Pond will continue for generations to come. Thank you!

Thanks to Sanford and Mabel Doughty, Chebeague Island children have shared the magic of skating on Sanford’s Pond for generations. By the late 1970s, Sanford was busy working on enlarging and clearing out the pond. By the early 1980s, skating on the Pond was an island wide, regular event. Ice hockey was very popular, and the lights made evening skating possible. Soon community volunteers joined together and built the shelter. The cement floor was poured,
