Marty’s Memories - A Good Place To Be by Marty Trower
The complications are worth it. The water around us provides a barrier that we must cross either in a private boat or our ferry. There was talk of a bridge in the 1950s that did not come to fruition. If it weren’t for global warming, we might be crossing over on the water this winter. Come to think of it though, I did try walking across one time. It was 1971, I think, that winter when the bay froze over solid between Chebeague and Cousins. Most people resorted to taking the Casco Bay Lines ferry to Portland but they didn’t do it any more than they had to. I was staying in my parents’ house alone on the island for a month and for some reason decided to walk across the bleak expanse of white with Bruce Bowman and Gunnar Wood. It was rock hard solid yet we walked gingerly and did not talk at all. We had tied a rope around all three of us, and again I don’t really know why. We got almost to the dock at Cousins and then returned for no apparent reason. Mysterious; nonetheless, it was an experience I’m glad I chanced to accept. Perhaps It made me see and feel that great divide in a way I might never have had I hesitated. In my youth, when we came to Chebeague from Montreal, we would take the small ferry, the Nellie G the third, from Handy Boat Service in Falmouth Foreside. We parked the car in their boat yard
lot for the summer. If you needed a ride to Portland, (and were too young to drive) handsome Jimmy Millinger, a deck hand on the Nellie then, would drive a rickety bus and drop you off at “Upper Hays” the drug store at the top of Congress and Free Streets. The Nellie G stopped at both Cousins and Littlejohn’s islands to pick up or let off passengers. I remember we often picked up a distinguished older man named Roger Driscoll who stayed every summer at a little hotel on Littlejohns. I think it was called the Rockmere. It was a very weathered shingled place and you could barely see it high in the woods when you looked for it from the boat. Mr. Driscoll would ride over often for the day to play golf on Chebeague. Today, there is a light at the end of the pandemic tunnel and we can look forward and inland with the wonderful news about the area that used to be called Parkers woods. I remember going there with a teen-aged gang to be told scary island ghost stories. Now It looks as though’ Littlefield Woods’ will become, officially, a public place for great outdoors walking and interacting with the beauty of interior Chebeague. Imagine, being able to hike explore further among the trees and birds and paths without worrying about going through other people’s property. The complications are worth it.

With all the information we have needed to pro- vide you over the last few months, we have been unable to properly recognize the contribu- tion of two board mem- bers who retired in 2020. Specs Eaton served on the board from 2008- 2011. He rejoined the board in 2014 and served until 2020. While on the board, Specs served as both Treasurer and Vice President. Specs played an im- portant role while on the CTC board. He was very active as a member of the executive committee. Pat Murray served on the board from 2017 to 2020. Pat was there when we needed him most—when we were retiring our old buses and purchasing new ones. His knowledge and willingness to de- vote time were invalua- ble to the company. He helped us evaluate and purchase the busses. He continues to offer his help as needed. Thanks Specs and Pat!! Employee Birthdays Bo Ramsey-12/3 Paul Chesley-12/30 Have a good one!

Service Cancellation
While CTC recognizes that many people rely on our service to get to school or work, we must al- ways consider safety first. Please review our policies below and use one of our communication chan- nels to stay informed about ser- vice interruptions. Bus Service: If school is can- celled in Yarmouth, the first bus of the day is automatically can- celled. There will not be a notice of this trip’s cancellation. Any other trip cancellations will be communicated as soon as possi- ble. Ferry Service: When making a decision to cancel a boat trip, we will consider not only the ability of the boat to run in the storm, but also our passengers’ ability to safely board the boat. Therefore, conditions where the wharves, ramps, and/or floats are unsafe will result in a ferry trip cancella- tion. This would include; high
winds making the floats rock dangerously (usually at Cous- ins), storm surges that put the top of the Stone Wharf under water, and excessive ice and/or snow on ramps, floats, or wharves. Until the channel at Chebeague is dredged, CTC will cancel ferry trips during extreme low tides to avoid ferry grounding. Scheduled low tide cancellations are posted in the Island Calendar 30-60 days in advance. For all cancellations, the information will be posted to the CTC’s web- site and Facebook page. An email will also be sent to Chebeague.org for posting. Emails and texts will be sent to those who registered on the cancellation page of our web- site to receive notification.
Safety First!!

These rules apply solely to prolonged power outages on the island. In the event of a natural disaster, the Community Center would be guided and governed by MEMA, FEMA, and the Red Cross. The Chebeague Island Hall, Council, and Library wish you a safe and healthy holiday season! The family of Scott “Big Bear” McCollom is thanking our island family for all the cards, kind words on the loss of the kind, gentle soul of our son, brother, uncle, nephew. He is greatly missed every day.

Notes From The Council
The recent power outage caught many of us by surprise. We have had several requests to include a message reminding folks to get their emergency kit together – especially for folks spending their first winter on the island. Everyone’s kit will, of course, be different. If you are fortunate enough to have a generator your kit may have fewer batteries and more chocolate. Here is the start of a list of things you might want to include, in no particular order: several flashlights, head lamps are handy as are camping lanterns. Bottled water, refillable water jugs, maybe a bucket to melt snow, cell phone chargers including one for the car,
a first aid kit, a phone to plug in to your landline if you still have one; easy, no-cook snacks, a solar or battery radio, and plenty of extra batteries. Please take the time to prepare. Ask your neighbors, who are familiar with Chebeague winters and power outages, to give you some ideas. Pay attention to the weather predictions. If you have some tips you would like to share, please send them to the Council’s email at chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com and we will include them in the Calendar in the months to come.
Kid’s Place
The Kid’s Place has been taking care of island children since 2008. Currently, there are 11 children enrolled at the licensed child care center, expertly run by new Head Teacher, Emily Short, and Assistant Teacher, Melissa Ames. Emily recently moved with her husband and two children to Yarmouth from Spring Church, Pennsylvania to take over at the Kid’s Place.A Psychology major with a focus on child development, Emily has a strong background in child care and community programming. Her previous work in a Waldorf school is a strong influence on the work she does at the Kid’s Place, “Providing a warm, calm, and creative environment benefits the social and emotional development of the children.” Emily has found that the children on Chebeague are particularly resilient and emotionally developed, adding, “The nurturing environment of the Kid’s Place is enhanced by the supportive environment of Chebeague Island.”
